TEST YOUR LUCK - JUST FOR FUN!!

One pick for who you think will win the Indy 500, and one pick extra on a long shot.

I'll go first, DA:

To win - Mi. Andretti

Three Andretti kids have been trying to win this race since Mario's 1969 victory. He is due.

Long shot - Sarah Fisher

This young gal has my mother's maiden name and the talent to pull it off. Walker crew at its best. Wonder if Sarah has access to my bank account?

Tony Stewart

Long Shot - Scott Sharp - when is the last time the pole sitter won?

Little Al, beating Mikey hehehe

Scott Sharp, longshot, not really , fastest car and fastest pit crew. now if he can stay out of trouble and have no freak failure

Tony S. will not make the race, it will be rain delayed and he will have to fly off to Charlotte

My predictions

Little Al as the long shot

doing much better in the IRL ...
the "junior league" of racers)
THAT'S a long shot for ya!

What ever became of the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing"?

John,

I'm sad to say I agree with you about the IRL. The "glory days" of Indy are probably gone.

Don't tell me its going to rain? Don't want to hear that...

Well, it's raining on Saturday morning in Illinois.
Looks like rain all weekend here, and Indy gets what we get 12 to 18 hours later. Might be a bit damp for "drop of the flag" time. That's OK though... we'll all get to hear more spewage (or is that commentary) from Paul Page. Now he can call a race, 'eh? Where's Jackie Stewart when you need him?

Jackie Stewart is playing "MOTORCAR" for Ford, with the big dogs in F-1. I think Bob Jenkins is calling the race for ABC this year, as Paul Page's contract is for CART only? I could be wrong???

Gheezzz, nothing better than five hours of racing pre-empted because of rain, and filled time with info-commercials. Maybe Ron Popeil has a new product?

Think I'll get out the Grand Canyon Tour 2000 video, and see if Ed's ears grew longer............

Close only counts in horseshoes!!!

Mi. Andretti was third, so I'm off afew positions.

Congrats to Penske Racing for a #1 & #2 - Great driving job by Helio. The guy sure does get excited. Guess I would also for making a million $$$.

JohnS - we were both still right, as the top five final finish drivers all came from the CART series. Probably makes Tony George mad that the IRL drivers aren't winning against the superior CART teams. Stewart, from NASCAR,6th.

Can Tony Stewart win tonight??? Sure he can, if his butt isn't too sore............

Was that a race or an ABC Marketing Series with racing highlights?

OK the race is over and it is almost 10:00 and I still don't know who won, and I live in INDY. But I really don't care too much or I would have listen to it on the radio

watching it on tape delay right now.

JohnS - ABC made money today with all the commercials. They even went to commercial break during an important pit stop series. And Al Michaels??? He knows nothing about racing - keep him at Monday Night Football! 09210 TV star in broadcast booth (another sic joke on us) and I will not even touch Aerosmith leader singing at the start. Thank God for Jim Neighbors.

LarryM - glad your watching it now. Its a different world now we live in, I understand. My dad preached to me as a young boy, that it was un-american to NOT listen to the World Series and the Indy 500 (radio only in those days). Even when I had to work on race day, I'd listen to it and video tape it to watch when I got home.

The INDY 500 -
One of my earliest memories of "summer" is working out in the yard with my Dad, and as he was trimming the hedges or cutting the grass, the portable transistor radio was'nt far away. There was a RACE that was going on, something that a few brave and daring men were doing - driving really fast cars at unheard of speeds, risking life and limb - on the edge! The drivers were larger than life back then, too! I remember when HotWheels would put out a diecast honoring the "Winner" afterwards... and the winner was a hero!
A few years later, that same race was telecast, delayed, of course, in a two hour editted broadcast. We'd be glued to the 'set, not wanting to miss a thing! I remember the time when we actually got to see the LIVE broadcast of the race. The "Indy 500" meant something back then. Not only did it mean summer was here, but the race itself was special in some magical way. It was bigger than life...
Some things remain from that time, like Jim Neighbors singing "Back Home Again in Indiana", most things have changed though. Ever since Rosanne "sang" the National Anthem, I guess sporting events have lost sight of this song's signifigance. (I know, free speech, open minded interpretations, indiviualistic expression, etc. but please, let's not make a mockery of this song! How about putting some dignity and respect back into it's presentation?) And what was once a great American Tradition - the Greatest Specticale in Racing - after yesterday's race, it has perhaps become just another marketing gimmick! When ABC returns to the "race" from one of it's excessively long commercial "breaks", and the track is under "yellow" - when it was green before the break - what do we get? Al Michaels giving us a recap of all the yellows we had from the start of the race, up to but NOT including the current yellow. Maybe I'll read about that incident or whatever caused the yellow, next week in AutoWeek. Same thing happens when we come back from another break and all the cars are parked on pit lane. Is the race over? Is it a red flag, and if so - why? A full five minutes later we finally figure out Red flag due to rain... Our 'Announcers' didn't think this "tidbit" was important enough for their viewing audience to know, much less for them to report.
That's "Excellance in Broadcasting"? Give me a break! As far as I'm concerned, ABC can go "span the globe" all they want with their sports coverage, but when they do find something to present, please - PRESENT the darn thing responsibly! (And yes, I'm VERY thankful Paul Page wasn't there! THANK YOU ABC!) Maybe that's why I can't get into network sports anymore. Sure, money makes the world go around, but it used to be that when you "bought" something, you got what you paid for, too! Now, if the masses don't complain too much, we can push the envelope even further! And I won't even comment on the IRL vs CART drivers or the premise of what the IRL's "mission" is...

Maybe I should finish my yard chores and go ride my bicycle to a friends house, and we can play with our HotWheels and pretend we're racing like the big boys too! Summer is here, because yesterday, I heard the Indy 500 - almost...

JohnS - Thank you, I could not have said it better.....

Remember when the 500 went from a one week tape delayed showing on tv to live closed-circuit theater screening? I drove 130 miles round trip to the city it was playing at, convinced four other buddies to go, made it there early to get good seats, and watched 18 laps of the race before a rainout. We couldn't come back for the next day because we all had to work, and the theater said no refunds. I was young then, but learned my first valuable lesson in life - read the small print.

OK, you guys are right about a lot of the race, but what about the ending? This was the best end of a race I have seen in a long, long while. Castroneves stopping on the "brick line", jumping out, and climbing the fence was a fun exciting thing. Then his whole pit crew climbing the fence. Almost caught the announcers speechless. This isn't what they had planned.

The announcers didn't know what to do. They planned quick ending then go to commercial. For once we got to see the race end and the whole celebration leading up to the "milk".

I don't know about you guys, but the end made the whole race worth watching.

I bet there were some young men watching the Indy 500 with their father's, and will recall this race 30 years from now. Remembering how much fun it was, and how routine the drivers take their victory nowadays.

Jim - Glad you watched. Your points are well taken.

Only the Unser/Goodyear finish was better at Indy.
Last July Michigan 500 finish, was the best ever. JMO

Hope some young kids, grow up to love racing in the future!

Jim,
Indeed the ending was great. The race - or the parts that we saw, at least were great. The moment I'll remember from this year's race was when Michael Andretti passed Greg Ray just before the rains came... YESSSS! just a couple more laps to go and the race is official...(please excuse this interuption ... time for another commercial...) OK, we're back... geee what can the announcers talk about now. Gotta vamp before that next commercial break - oh wait - there's a race we can comment on... My point is that this race - as well as just about any race has it's moments. It would be nice to SEE these moments as they happen! (NOW is always better than seeing it on the six o'clock news as an editted highlight) If I'm going to watch the sponsor's commercials, the least they can do is entertain me between the commercial segments with responsible broadcasting.

My favorite Indy finish... flash back to around 1988/89
Emerson Fitipaldi and Little Al are dueling it out, two laps before the end of the race... wheels touch going into Turn 3 - Little Al looses it and slams into the outside wall (YESSSS!) - Emo saves it and goes on to take the win...

I just hope that in thirty years we will still have decent coverage of all our sporting events (which means we have something we have to get back to in terms of "quality") and not some sensationalized broadcast without content ... One can always hope...

Yes the Emmo and Little Al finish was great that year. Remember Little Al walking down the track to motion to Emmo coming around after accident and thought he was going to give him the New Jersey salute, instead gave Emmo a for having the balls to hang in there with him. Not many drivers would ever do that after knowing they just lost a million $$$. I think in NASCAR its mandatory to throw your helmet at the guy who bumped with you! Good ole boys!
