LEGENDARY RACER AND ENGINE BUILDER SMOKEY YUNICK DIES

Racing legend Henry "Smokey" Yunick died of leukemia on
Wed., May 9. SEMA members may remember Yunick from the popular "Breakfast with Smokey" gatherings that were held at the SEMA Show*ITE. He was a famous racer and engine builder in the oval track field of racing and was well known for his down-home style of telling stories about his racing days. Yunick was 77 years old.

There are two great story's that was way cool about him.

At a Nascar race his race car was getting way way way better gas mileage than everyone else, so Nascar tore the car completely down, emptied gas tank so on and so forth. Smokey was pissed. So when they put the car back together at the Nascar garage with no apparent fuel in the car, he started up the car and drove away.

He was the one that made Nascar start using templates for measuring all the cars because for a couple or races he built a 4/5 scale racecar that no one could figure out what was different with his SMALLER racecar.

I will always remember his hat.

I am so sorry to hear about "Smokey's" passing. He was one
of the great ones; very knowledgeable. I remember looking
forward to reading his tech tips and articles in Popular
Mechanics every month during the early 70s
