I'm in the market to buy a 4x4 - specifically an American 4x4, but I stop and check out the Toyota Sequoia -I know - blasphemy. The saleswoman gave a great presentation on the Sequoia. Very knowledgeable about the features and capabilities. She knew her product and her competitors' products. She was trained, tested, and trained some more-I could tell. I then check out the 2001 Grand Cherokee 8 cylinder at a dealership that ONLY sells Jeeps. The Jeep salesman was a bumbler. Very limited product knowledge. He didn't know the towing capacity nor the horsepower of the engine! I want to buy American but the sales presentations I received when I bought my Chrysler T/C Limited AWD minivan and Prowler were on the neophyte level. Same goes for yesterday's Jeep presentation. Better keep the rebates coming because you will have problems moving product without them. I know DC sales people receive training but the training must be poor, not pounded into the reps, mediocre sales management, bad hiring evaluations, marginal incentive compensation or something. I will pass on the Jeep. I'm available for hire DC to provide sales training - sale training by GE (Crotonville) and Merrill Lynch. I'm not cheap at all but am very effective. You get what you pay for. GO MOPAR!

NightProwler......it is unfortunate that the dealerships keep pushing customers away with their lack of knowledge. However, that certainly doesn't mean that the product is bad. Having worked at a dealership in the past, the salespeople turnover is immense. I'm not sure what training the dealerships are given by DC or how often. But when your personnel continues to turn over at the rate it does at many dealerships I would imagine that training would be difficult to keep up with. Not an excuse, but probably a fact. In addition, it is the Dealer Principal and/or Sales Manager's responsibility to make sure that their personnel are well versed on their product. DC cannot always be held responsible for that. Quite frankly, in my experience, the salespeople who really want to sell and make money will make sure that they know their product. Unfortunately, there are a lot of salespeople who think that the product will sell itself. I think you would find this at other manufacturer dealers, also, not just DC.

That is too bad that you are going to pass on the Jeep, it is a great product. So is the new Liberty. You can continue looking for a dealer who is product knowledgeable or ask someone who has a DC vehicle already what dealer they went to and what their experience was like. Why don't you give it another chance?

Sometimes getting logical, good advice from a woman can really be frustrating.

Nightprowler - have you looked at the Durango? Ours is a 98 and we almost 70K miles on it. We really love it. We have taken it to Colorado (Durango/Silverton area) and several areas here in California to do some 4X4 - and it is great. Also, there is a great user-base of people that do mods. Check out Durangoclub.com!

NiteCrawler - You are right about lack of product knowledge, etc. When I sold for Ford, way back when, the truth is you only got ONE good salesperson for every 60 that hired on. Only successful ones went to Ford Motor Sales Training classes, and I was lucky to make that class.

But the true fact is, most people (not us Prowler owners) don't care about what you know about the product knowledge. The reality is fitting a car into the budget. I personally sold many cars without ever telling people the price or amount of money the whole deal was costing them - JUST HOW MUCH PER MONTH IT WAS. I'm not so proud of that, but that is what sells cars (or leases) to most of the buying public. That is unfortunate, but that is business in the REAL WORLD.

Back in the mid-70's, I had a good friend failing in the realestate business. I asked him: Are you showing people houses and teling them this one is $30,000 and that one is $38,500, etc. He said yes. I told him to fit a house into their budget - monthly payment. He soon became quite successful in selling homes, WITHOUT mentioning the cost of the home.

Valley Cat: Funny you mention that. The Jeep salesman never asked me a thing about monthly payments but the Toyota saleswoman did. I told her the monthly payment doesn't matter to me. Sort of threw her off her pitch but she was good and rolled right into "how many children will you be transporting in the vehicle?" I used to sell souveneirs at Sox Park in high school and college. I spoke in questions....Guy WALKING by would ask, "How much is a hat? I'd say, "Which one"? He would say "A sox hat". I would say, "For you and your son?" Hed say, "For both." Then I'd hand them each a hat to try on. At that point 99% of the sale was made. Or on date night with a guy walking with his gal I'd look at the woman and say, "If he really loved you he'd buy you a hat." She'd look at him and smack him in the arm and say "Yeah!". Sale made.

Cwatson: Thank you for the recommendation. I will test drive a Durango. What size engine do you have in your Durango? I did test drive an Expedition. No guts and very "plasticky" and cold feeling. I think my Schwinn could outrun it in the 1/4.

I have the 5.9L with the 3.92 gears... I hear the new 4.7L is very smooth and quick. We have a bunch of guys in our area that take them to track all the time...I have never taken mine though. I have out-raced a '90s Mustang Cobra from the line though (much to his suprise hah). The Durango has a lot of guts and good pulling power too. I loaded our '65 Mustang on a full trailer and pulled it to Utah without any problems - couldn't even tell it was there.

Do test drive it - but be prepared to like it

Nightprowler.........

Bob and I currently are on our second 2001 Durango. This is our 4th or 5th in a row!! We started out with 5.9 SLT+ and now use the 4.7/45RFE with 3.92 gears, big tires and factory trailer tow. Our loaded trailer is about 6,000 lbs. and tows very easily. Bob hauled a stack of four 21' open car trailers from the manufacturer. They weighed over 8,000 lbs. and had no trouble. We can drive vitually any vehicle DC offers and get a new one at least once a year. Our choice remains the 4.7 Durango!

Suspension changes to the 2001 made a tremendous difference in ride and handling. The suspension guy has moved over to Jeep, so Bob is looking for an improvement there! Hope this gives you some insight into our perspective on what we choose to drive. By the way, Bob is the Jeep Platform Business Operations Executive and takes heat for driving a Dodge!!!!
