Out here in California, you never see a tanker at a gas station with the same brand name of gas on the side of the tanker as the station it is pumping the gas to. The tankers never have a name of the side, why is that?

Is Texaco really Texaco?

The NAME BRAND should only pump their gas into their tanks. That is why you pay more at them. The independent is just that. Free to buy on the open market at the BEST price.

At least that is what I have been lead to believe.

Some refiners contract the distribution out to subcontractors so they don't have to worry about maintaining the equipment or dealing with truck driver/employee issues.

Look at trailers with McDonalds on them. McDonalds doesn't own or lease them. Pearlman Roche (spelling?) exclusively provides this service for McDonalds so McD can focus on flipping burgers, not maintaining tractors and trailers.

I'd say Pearlman Roche has gotten very wealthy of the McD boys then.

Just a very few distributors supply the entire state in Michigan which serves to eliminate competition...most gas haulers have some guys name on the truck. Seems to make it easier to get everyone in line for pre weekend increases...15 cents per today.

Hey now, I have heard that what makes the fuel a certain brand is the additives they add to the "in ground tanks".........

Refined gas goes down pipeline to central distribution center; additives are only added there to company's requested supply, so they say. I think they all use only one additive - TCP=Tom Cat Pis$. Independant contractors are hired to deliver to many stations, because of the above stated reasons the others have given.

Trivia question: In many areas, diesel and then gas goes down one pipeline. What is the fuel called between the start and stop between each different flow? What is it used for? I have the answers - later.

It is called Trans-Mix. Mixture of gas and diesel fuel. fifteen years ago, some independent oil company started selling gas 10-15cents less than everybody else. Cars started having severe engine problems, and was tracked down to Trans-Mix in tanks by newspaper people. Big time heat!

I understand that this crap is now usually sold cheap to companies that make weed and vegatation killer, and us smart people pay $5-$7 a gallon for it! How smart are we?

would this not fall into unfair business practices then, not to mention environmental health concerns?

Todd - on some of the weed killers I have used to spray, it said on jug that it contained petroleum products. It is probably cut with something else, as it didn't smell like gas. Even more profit per gallon now!
