One kid, popcorn for dinner three times a week, jelly and one piece of bread for lunch.

Yea, me too, spoiled at birth.

We were way poor.

I wanted to go to the neighborhood in Detroit where I was raised, gut I couldn't find an armor truck.

I am dead serious.

We were so poor that for my birthday I told my parents I wanted a watch, so they let me. I saw a condom with a hot patch and a laundry mark on it in my neighborhood. Rim shot now please. We were so poor I never slept alone until after I was married.

Imagine you're 14-17 years old in Chicago and try thumbing 26 miles in a suit and tie every day just to get to an all boys Jesuit highschool across from public housing projects, and then have Jesuit priests teach you about the 3 R's and discipline. If any of you have a child who might thumb do whatever you can to make sure they don't do it. I saved my parents 50 cents a day by thumbing vs. taking the bus. Two friggin' quarters....

NightProwler, a lot has changed since then, all for the worse. fifty cents was worth a little more back then, too, especially if you didn't have it. You don't see many hitchhikers anymore, do you?

Ed, I don't see many hitchhikers at all. Thumbing: very dangerous business and it doesn't matter who the driver APPEARS to be. First thing I did whenever I got in a car was to locate the door handle and door lock. I never got in the back seat of a coupe.
