It was a beautiful day for an annual bluebonnet run with friends. Someone was missing though, and we all kept that person in our thoughts throughout the day. The person that started it all. The person smiling down on us throughout the day. Fred Henkel. This run was dedicated to Fred. ![]()
I met up with Larry and Connie Tilitzki and Don and Jackie Ward, and headed out to meet the others in Chappell Hill. We had some people there that we hadn't seen in a long time as well as some new additions and visitors to the group. I hope they forgive me, as I'm bad with names. We had 10 Prowlers, 1 Mercedes, 1 Cadillac, and 1 vette.

We would soon find that the day was not without it's problems. On our morning trip out to meet with the group, Larry lost his huck nuts on one of his fenders. (I think there was a post on rust spots on the fender brackets a while back causing this to happen. Might have been by Obi Wan? Maybe someone can help Larry with a link.) ![]() As we were leaving to go to the airport for lunch, my fuel pump went out on me and I had to wave others by me. I think they just thought I was going to bring up the rear. Jim and Lori Robertson were the last car and they stopped to ask me if I was ok. Jim helped me push my car to a parking spot and we headed out to the airport diner where the Prowlers were parked on the tarmac. The food and comraderie was great.

From there we headed out to Lake Summerville's Overlook Park, a staple stop for the group picture where we parked in the missing man formation. (The Prowler on the end was Dave's. He parked sideways as he came from Austin and had his trailer with him.) ![]()
Joe presented Debe with a couple of special roses. One was for her to keep, the other one left in memory to Fred. He also presented her with a plaque honoring Fred for all he did for the South Texas POA Chapter. This message has been edited by idive on 03-31-2012 at 11:10 PM |

From there we went to Independence, but it was too crowded to make a good stop there so we passed on that and opted to go on to Washington on the Brazos. While there, it was noticed that someone had hit Joe's car and damaged his bumper and fender. (I didn't get any pics of that.) Whoever it was had to be sitting high enough to ride over his bumper to get to his fender without pushing the bumper back. They hit it pretty good as the bumper cover was busted quite a bit. It should be noted that Joe joined the group a little over a year ago, and never had the pleasure of meeting Fred or going on any of the cruises he put together. But he stepped up and organized this run. He did a great job and would have made Fred proud. You would never know this was his first bluebonnet run. From the itinerary, to the presentation of the beautiful roses and sharp plaque, to parking, to offering any means of help to anyone needing it, he did a fantastic job putting this thing together and dedicating it to Fred. Yes it is the same fuel pump problem I had in Branson. After getting home, I finally got the dealer to buy me a new pump but I had to pay the labor. Took about 6 months to get that far with them and the pump I got was a 1 off test pump from their new vendor (since the bailout where they didn't pay their old vendors). That pump lasted less than 100 miles. They wouldn't talk to me after that. Then I got laid off and the economy crashed and I was out of work for a good while so never got the Neon pump deal done. I got work now but it's contract and they only renew my contract for 90 days at a time. They don't have alot of work so I suspect that I'll be let go by end of June if nothing else comes in the door. I've just had other priorities. We've got another cruise later this month that I don't want to miss so I hope to get something going. |

To the Prowler family Faye & I are sadden we could not make it. We both wanted this so bad. Our grandson was in a Quinceanera and he was the birthday grail's partner for her Quinceanera. If you know anything about Quinceanera the partner is a big part of this Quinceanera. It is just like a wedding. Our day started at 2 until 12 that night. My grandson had a good time and so did his grandpa and grandma. Again we are sorry we could not be there but Arthur was there and he told us all about what Joe did for Debbie and what everyone did on the cruise. Faye and I hope to make the next cruise. We hope to be seeing everyone sometime later. |

I too would like to Thank Joe for putting this event together, coming up with the plaque the refreshments and making this a wonderful time for all .The fellowship that we all share is another example of why this Car Club works .Our Texas group is an awesome one ,(as well as the National Group)and even though we do not get to visit that often we all manage to pick up right where we left off .It was so great to spend this time with one another and to reflect on the many stories of past cruises with Fred. This day was Dedicated to Fred and I truly believe he was smiling upon us .Iam thankful for having known him and being a part of the Prowler community .

Awesome post and pics Mickey. Jacquie and I were thrilled to be a participant in the festivities. You, and everyone else are right. Joe did Fred proud. We wore our colors (actually Fred's colors) proudly and to be amazed by the tribute to a friend of us all, Fred Henkel. Joe, Thank you so much for such moving moments and gestures. May you Rest in Peace on Hot Rod row in Heaven Fred. We miss you! |

Thanks Mickey for doing such a nice write up and posting some very good pictures. I normally take some also, but this time only a few. I will include a couple but have little else to offer. Special thanks to all that took time out of their busy schedules to attend. Unfortunately, not many bluebonnets. But at least the weather cooperated. Certain things man cannot control, weather, mother nature (and women!) I would like to go ahead and make a motion to nominate George Johnson to be in charge of the event next year. Any opposed (other than George)? Good, motion passed. Good luck George ![]() At the airport: Debe and her son: At Lake Somerville:
And unfortunately, I can post a picture of the bumper issue. Bummer:
And it got enough of the fender that it will have to be repainted also. Oh well, sh@t happens. This message has been edited by dru on 04-02-2012 at 09:53 PM |

OMG Mickey & Joe I think y'all may have captured the possible culprit. if you look at the pictures you will see the TRUCK parked on the tarmac ,and the only way he could have gotten there was to pass between Joe and Dave (purple w/ trailer).Remember there were no cars parked on the other side of the orange cones when we arrived, and after reviewing the photos (which were taken after lunch)You can see vehicles parked on the tarmac off to the side of building and in Mickey's photo that TRUCK is now sitting next to where the planes are Sooooooooooo maybe this is the vehicle that hit you ... Then again we may never know . I just hope Karma will take care of them ,whomever it was .Sure is rotten of them to not have taken responsibility for damage done . I mean how do you NOT know you hit something ,especially if you are trying to squeeze through ... This message has been edited by ivegotsugar on 04-02-2012 at 01:53 AM |

Thank You, to everyone who came out and honored my dad, Fred! I am glad that he had friends like you who shared his passion for cars, but more specifically PROWLERS. I hope to continue to get to know all of you in events to come.

Thank you, Joe, for putting the Bluebonnet run together this year, and for dedicating it to Fred. Fred loved putting on the events, and it was really hard for him when he could no longer be the coordinator, but he would have been proud of the job you did, and honored at the tribute. Thank you also goes to Angela and to Mickey, who I know also gave their time and energy to the event. Thank you to all the people who took the time to come out and play. Events are nothing without the people, and this is the greatest bunch of people that I have ever been associated with. God bless each of you. -LadyPrwlyn |
