SUMMARY
We'll take a quick rest stop at the Canyon Lake Scenic Lookout, a good photo op. This will be a little over an hour into the trip. There are restroom facilities and it's a nice place to stretch your legs. Old Blanco Road is the next major attraction. This is a one of those beautiful less-traveled country roads, loved by bikers and unknown to the typical tourist. The one lane road winds over the hills and through creek crossings. This and River Road are two of the top five best roads in Texas for this type of trip. From here we'll pick up the pace along the river and make our way to Luckenbach, another favorite gig of Willie Nelson's made famous by one of his songs and is also a popular biker's hangout. The general store/post office, the music hall, and old-fashioned hamburger stand make a nice backdrop for a beverage and a snack. In this tiny town there are wooden picnic tables, outdoor fire pits, free-range chickens and a nice set of outhouses. Live entertainment will be waiting for our arrival we should plan to stay in town for just over an hour. Fredericksburg, the Peach Capital of Texas, is close by and this would be a good time to top off our tanks. Fredericksburg is a shopper's paradise, boutiques and antique shops abound. We could stop for 20 minutes in historic downtown, time and daylight permitting; some may even want to stay here for dinner. Then we head out of Fredericksburg on HWY 16 towards scenic Willow City Loop. This is a 15-mile, one-lane, paved country lane you can find only if somebody tells you where it is. It is a unique country lane that provides access to local ranches of the valley. Abundant wild life and livestock freely cross this road. This part of the trip and Fredericksburg will depend on what time we leave River City Raceway. The entire trip as described will take five and one half hours and cover 176 miles. We can shorten it up to four hours if we take the alternative route to Horseshoe Bay after leaving Luckenbach or under three hours without Luckenbach. The trip will show the beauty of the Texas Hill Country accented with a fresh crop of Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrushes. ------------------ This message has been edited by Gary C on 03-06-2001 at 10:23 AM |

HILL COUNTRY TOUR From the River City Raceway, we'll head east on IH-10 for nine miles. There is a convenient place to gas up at the Texaco/Jack-In-The-Box when we exit IH-10 at HWY 46. From there we're on to Gruene. We'll pass right by Gruene Dance Hall (the oldest in Texas), which is frequented by entertainers such as Willie Nelson and Bo Diddley. Our trip will then take us to River Road that winds through the hill country along the Guadalupe River. This is a great time of year to enjoy this great Texas summer hangout - before summer tubing and rafting! We will crossover the river half a dozen times and you'll see cliffs, rapids and trout fisherman along this 13-mile road. We'll take a quick rest stop at the Canyon Lake Scenic Lookout, a good photo op. This will be a little over an hour into the trip.
