The battery on the Orange Prowler was totally shot so I bought a new battery and put the new one in the Candy Prowler and put that battery in the Orange Prowler. That battery is the OEM battery and is still good. I don't drive the Orange one as much.
What a pain putting in the battery. The hold down is almost impossible to get in place due to a total lack of room. I left the hold down in place, very loosely connected. I then put the battery and had to use a piece of hanger wire, bent at the end to slide under the piece and lift it while I jiggled the hold down with a long screw driver. I had taken the grill out thinking I could get to it from the front, but there is no room to get to it from than angle either.
Anyone else have a different method that worked ?

Did you try from underneath? Just a thought. There might not be hand room there either. I'll admit its not easy.

It is hard to put a car up on ramps when the battery is totally dead and there surely isn't enough room under the front of the car for me to get to anything if it is not on a ramp. If you were to change it out while it was still functioning somewhat, you might be able to, but it would be tough, I think.

The hardest part of the battery replacement is getting the holddown bolt into the bracket. When changing my battery I just put a dab of wheel bearing grease inside the socket to hold the bolt and the install is much easier. Also, I remove the holdown bracket during replacement to make battery placement easier.

Ed do you have a wonder bar? I have the Bob Goetz version and I disconnect mine when replacing the battery.

instead of grease, use a small piece of masking tape to hold bolt in socket.not as messy as grease.if you also use 2 long aprox.6 inch extensions on the ratchet it will reach very easily.

I put the bracket and the bolt in place and then put the battery in on top of it but I pushed the bracket as far forward as I could. I used a long screw driver to push it the rest of the way from under the battery but then had to lift the bracket 1/4 inch to get it in place on the side of the battery. Then I used a long extension to tighten it up.
I figured there was no way to get the bracket in place and get the bolt into the hole with only about an inch of clearance.
Jim, if you are referring to the piece that connects the towers, there was one on the Orange car but I didn't even put that back on. I don't have one on the Candy. The wonder bar that Larry Lord sells is totally different and makes a huge difference but that does not go across the top of the battery.

Ed the best thing to do is remove the grill. Only a few small screws and then you have lots of room. Then place a 5 gallon bucket upside down in front of the car have a seat, and slip the battery in thru the opening. It helps to have some Nital rubber gloves to keep the cuts to a minimum. I have a rare YellerCat upper frame brace and must remove it when I want the battery out. That is a real pain; but one that I accept.

I took the grill out about half way through the ordeal hoping I could get to the bracket more easily but that didn't help at all. It did make it easier to lower the battery into place, I agree.

Ed - get one of those telescoping magnets. I replaced my battery today and it went smooth as a baby's bottom. Push battery as far to the rear as you can. Place the magnet on the hold down just behind the hole (toward the front of the car). You'll have to go around the side of the battery and kinda angle the hold down around the framing, but it fits thru and lowers down in place easily. Slide the magnet to the side to get it off the hold down. Place the magnet then on the "washer ring" on the nut and you can start it on the bolt with that. Then use a 13mm deep socket and a couple extensions and she's in.

Yup, same procedure I have used. Tape works great, and at least a 12" extension or longer does the trick with the depth. Grill is not needed to be removed.

I just installed a Optima red top battery in ours, was a very easy swap. Just used a extra long set of needle nose pliers and it was a piece of cake.

When replacing our batteries, I didn't replace the hold-down part..... The battery isn't going anyplace, unless you are going to do some off-road racing or Evil Knievel jumps on the ramps...

Never had a problem with the battery moving around....
