My SSS muffler gave up the ghost Saturday. The rear outlet pipes separated from the main unit.I really liked the sound it produced and the gurgle it had when you let off the gas. It's a shame it only lasted 7000 miles.
So to replace it I purchased the Sweet Thunder setup.
X pipe and 24 inch aluminized chambers.
The new muffler weighs in at 26 pounds . I don't know what the SSS weighs because it is still on the car.I will replace it this Saturday.
Question," Is this alot of weight for a single muffler"?
Is it the weight that causes the pipes to separate from the muffler?

Thomas,
The back plate that has the rear outlet can be re-welded with bracing. This happened to me also with the SSS muffler. A whole lot less than a new muffler. The back pressure, on the back plate, is the culprit.

The new muffler arrived this morning. Maybe I will look into having the SSS repaired.
My concern is the new muffler feels so heavy,or is it that I am seven years older.

all theses a/m mufflers crack at the ends due to the vibration of the system.as stated, both frt and rear, where pipes go into muffler and come out, need to be braced,if muffler is already cracked, toss it,the braces wont help, cause it will crack again.need to start w.a good muffler.same thing w/my billyboat system.once they braced all 4 pipes,no problems.pressure has nothing to due w/it.it cracks from the system vibrating.you can try to fix the old one,but once its cracked nothing will help.they warranteed mine.call the sss muffler people and tell them they are defective and you want it replace by them at n/c.it all comes down to thin metal in the ends.

Tom, I've had my Sweet Thunder Exhaust System in for over 3 years now with no problem. Weight has not been a factor. Remember these are mufflers not glass packs that were originally designed for Corvettes..

Sweet Thunder exhaust was installed Saturday. It is the x pipe and 24in. baffles.
The sound is very nice.
I went to a cruise meet Sunday and the people that heard them were impressed.

It was a pretty hard decision to make without first hearing the Sweet Thunder and I couldn't be any more happy that I did it.
As good as the SSS sounded and it did sound good, the Sweet Thunder is a better sound. The Kat actually has a soft rumble about it,

Has anyone bought and installed the 18" mufflers with the x-pipe. If so is the sound louder or to loud for normal driving. Im going to install a set this summer and just trying to decide which ones to put in. I want something louder so people will hear me coming down the street but not so loud that I lose what little hearing I have left.

I haven't heard the 18" but the 24 inch sound GREAT. I don't have them but I really like the sound of them. That is a tried and true version. Hopefully someone will chime in on the 18 inchers.

I've had the 24" w/X pipe on for almost 3 years now and think they sound great. You do hear them coming down the street. If you go with the 18" I was told there wouldn't be that much of a difference, plus the 24" is a perfect fit without having to add a spacer pipe. You may also increase your interior noise with the 18".

See if you can get a sound clip and shoot it to me. I have 18" glass packs with an H pipe but wouldn't mind possibly changing.

Finally got around to replacing the sss. Took it to a muffler shop and as he was taking the sss off the back plate just fell off. I guess it was time, but only 2000 miles on it.
Replaced it with the 24 " and sounds great.

if you put a reinforcing plate frt and rr on all 4 pipes were they go into the muffler,it will last forever.bacisally a small brkt welded to each pipe bracing it to the end plate.i have billy boat exhaust on mine and it came w/a lifetime warranty.after replacing muffler 2 times, they added braces as described and hasnt cracked since.w/o the braces you will be replacing it again.the cracks are caused by vibration in the exhaust system.
