I just replaced the door speakers in one of my Prowlers. Out of curiosity, I took the plastic protective cover off the speaker and the cause of failure was foam rot on the flexible surround foam. Just for giggles, I looked at both of the new speakers (factory sealed boxes) and they also showed signs of rotting foam. Apparently the speakers are old stock that has been sitting on the shelf in some warehouse. These are Infinity speakers made for Chrysler and I believe they are made exclusively for the Prowler (Bruce, correct me if I'm wrong). The foam surrounds can be replaced. I ordered some spares today from Orange County Speakers. A kit for two speakers is $29.95. ------------------ |

Mike, I think you were clear enough but I have never heard of that before. You ARE talking about the foam ring that attaches to the cone and the frame of the speaker? |

Mike: When you describe speaker failure, what was happening? Did the speakers cut out entirely or did they just start to sound horrible? Just wondering what to listen for...or what to expect. Thanks! |

Mike, Chrysler does use a lot of Infinity products in their vehicle lineup and probably was the only speaker in the Prowler, however I could not say Infinity is exclusive to Chrysler. Bruce ------------------ |

Mike, Post pics and info on where to get the parts. Very interesting. If those are the speakers I ordered, they have a 1yr warranty. Let me know and I'll get them replaced. Don |

The problem with my door speakers was identical, Mike. It's good to know there's a cheap fix for the stock speakers. Black tie. when they go, you'll know it. The sound is distorted and you'll hear alot of vibration in the speaker. |

I am interested in replacing the stock speakers with better sounding speakers. Does anyone have the sizes that will fit stock areas, or even a source to purchase from. I tried crutchfield and they had no info. on the prowler speaker replacements. Any info. would be appreciated. |

Mike with all your Kats the radios must only get turned on once a year? You have to add to AC's list of duties to turn the radios on once a week for 10 minutes to exercise those things. I am afraid mine are going to do the same thing since its been at Bankston for over a month! AARHHHHH ------------------ |

as explained to me by my audio tech buddy that did my speakers, there is one thing to remember when replacing these speakers. you guys probably know all this already, but maybe there are a few that don't: the door speakers/dash speakers and the rear speaker combos are using factory crossovers. in other words, if you blow your door speakers and go to circuit city and buy some 6.5" 2 way speakers, you're wasting your time and money because the only thing coming out of those speakers is midrange audio. likewise, a 2 or 3 way 3.5" in the dash is pointless because only highs are coming out of them. that's why you're best off buying component systems that will take advantage of the separated audio signals and replacing the speakers in pairs (doors and dash or the rear combos). OR finding someone who will separate a component system if you don't need the whole set up (like my friend did for me with the JL midrange 6.5" i have in my doors) |

I just did a search and found the Orange County Speaker website. Their instructions seemed pretty easy, so I figured I would give it a try. Just ordered the foam surround and it should be here in a few days. Thanks to Mike for letting us in on this little secret. I had originally bought some JL's to replace the factory, but they are 4 Ohms and would not be driven as well as the factory 2 Ohms unless you replaced the deck and the other speakers. |

Thanks for the pointer on speaker repair. For the Orange County order form.. Was there anything specific you need to state.. such as speaker size? I need to replace my doors + Sub.. If someone has all the speaker sizes handy, please post. I want to do all of them while I am at it. |
