I thought I would save Mythbusters the time and trouble of figuring out what happens when a Prowler trailer tire disintegrates at expressway speeds. Pics are the result of my experiment.
It happened in Adairsville, GA and my 1st thought was to call Rich "do anything in the world for you" Ware but remembered that Acworth, GA was much farther down the road. (wrong as it turned out) Flatbed, tire store on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, are you kidding, and 4 hours later we were back on the road. I'm pretty sure that while meeting Ed and Sandy in Cincy the day before, Ed excusing himself during lunch had nothing to do with it. He had to have forgotten about Stinking Creek Road in Tennessee by now. Tire simply disintegrated without warning on I-75. Fortunately no wheel damage. I will be looking for a trailer fender and tail light assembly. This message has been edited by MIKE GATLIN on 05-28-2012 at 12:18 PM |

Even with a gacked fender, just the smell of a Prowler got the attention of these guys on the expressway.

Pulling a prowler trailer on 95+ degree weather at 214 mph will do that every time. OUCH! Are trailer body parts available anymore? Maybe you can make the other one look the same and turn something terrible into a mod? Was it a worn tire? Over-inflated? Just old? Run over something? Sorry to hear about this. I always carry a spare in my trailer. Glad you were able to get back on the road in not too long a time. |

quote: Thanks Mickey. Smooth sailing on I-75 cruise set on 70 mph. Age is about the only issue. Goodyears still with some dimples on them. Tires would look to have a couple thousand miles. Road was clean and running about 26 lbs. Full of clothes and stuff but not overloaded at all. Very pleasantly surprised at the number of folks in Adairsville who stopped to offer help. Didn't expect that. |

Glad your OK, the tire & fender can always be replaced. Thats the first time I have heard of a trailer tire failure, maybe the age of the tire had something to do with it. Looks like a steel belted tire, Tire not only blew, It shreaded. This message has been edited by phil2237 on 05-28-2012 at 12:48 PM |

Sorry to read this Mike.. This is one of the reasons I install Runflats on all my Trailers. At least you were able to get back on the road. Heck of a way to start a retirement Road Trip. |

How awful!! Sorry to hear that story Mike,,,,terrible ending result,,,isn't making the move to Florida all that happy to start with. I'm sure things will get better when you get there....... Monahan would have driven right past you and waived...
Sliding Off-Topic some:
I know I've been told several times here that situations like that (tire blowout and resulting body damage) don't happen
But,,,I'm told that those non-runflat tires are a bargain,,,,lower price, better ride,,and all
Maybe the poll should be > HOW MANY WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A BLOW-OUT WITH THE ABOVE PICTURED ENDING RESULT? (UUHHHH,,,,$$$, and thats if you can find the quarter panel to replace the damaged one) But of course,,it won't happen to you,,,just somebody else. A/C, do you really think an OLD runflat can't disentegrate? Just thicker pieces. Mike, sorry to hear of the problems. Karen kept Sandy informed of the progress. I didn't want to post the bad news, not knowing if you wanted it out there. Glad you got back on the road right quick. |

I'm sure there have been millions, possibly billions of non-runflat tires that have never blown out or not caused damage when they did blow out. Runflats are basically put on cars that do not carry spares. I don't think they are put on cars for safety reasons. |

It looked like the tread separated from the side wall. When I pulled the wheel, though hardly complete, the tread section was completely separated from the sidewall. It happened in just a second. We had been on the road about an hour and I had checked all the tires before we left in the morning. No sign of distress at all. To be sure that the problem wasn't contagious, I replaced both tires. |

runflats are put on cars for better handling also.the tire pictured had a puncture while moving, lost all its air and destroyed itself.enough said about non run flats.i guess you owners have never heard about the thousands of uniroyals that have blown, causing thosands of dollars of damage and even killing you when at speed your car rolls.yep. i saved 500.00 on tire price, but got killed when my non run blew out. ------------------ This message has been edited by catfish on 05-28-2012 at 04:28 PM |

Yikes!! How awful!! Thank God you both are okay and made it safely. If you can't find one anywhere else, there is Bill Gill here in MI who bought most of the Prowler parts.Bill Gill Fly1956@comcast.net |

Sorry to read this post. At least you didn't have other POA members with you saying...HURRY UP and get it fixed we have a schedule to meet...like I did. The pressure I had was unbelievable. You now have a project to do do when you get to Florida. You have way too many friends on this site to let a thing like that bother you. You will be good as new in a short time. Good luck Mike. |

That's lousy! Perhaps Wayne Wagner has a trailer fender available? He's the only one I can think of that removed a trailer fender for the highboy look. Glad you guys are safe. Enjoy retirement! I'll look you up if we're ever on that side of the state. |

quote: I've never seen one disentegrate yet,,,but not saying it couldn't happen either.
This runflat tire was over 7 years old, and blew out at 60+mph with no damage to the car. Two former Prowler owners, Jerry Pignolo and Bob Rinsem, had runflats tires blow-out after striking objects in the road,,, with no damage to the cars. Also, I heard, Mike Rutherford from Arizona had a Prowler runflat blow-out in Montana, but haven't confirmed that episode with Mike.... Might ask Larry Lord about that incident,,,it was on one of their annual cross-country runs? On the other side,,,,I've seen hundred of exploding tires cause severe body damage to vehicles,,,granted, not knowing of the tire compound but would expect them to be regular tires used on most vehicles. Like I stated on the other thread about tires: "I have no dog in the fight,,,and really don't care which brand or type of tire you buy for a replacement,,,," Not my $$ or car,,,,just stating what I've seen first hand...
