quote: I'm surprised I never responded to this message when it was originally posted...So forgive this long one... "Jack" got his nickname from the lead character in the Nightmare Before Christmas movie...He was so tall and thin... "Chromer" got his nickname from the guys in the "pipe gang" or "crew" at an oil refinery 20 years ago. When I used be on the maintenance crew, you always got a nickname...there was "kiddo", "Pokey", "Stumpy" "Reverand"..etc.. Well..I was one of few folks who was qualifed to weld chrome alloy furnace tube piping, (so I did it a LOT) and I didn't have a nickname yet.... After about three months one of the guys said.."Whelp..we got your name figured out...it's either goin' ta be "Furnace Rat" (From climbing in and out of furnaces to weld the chrome tubes) or it's goin' to be "Chromer" (because I welded those chrome pipes)..." I knew I DID NOT want to be "Furnace Rat" so "Chromer" it was!!

Aside from my regular job, I'm also the race director for the Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series. I've been involved with this (and many other types) of racing for 25 years, and it's become a big part of who I am. My real name is Bob Wilson, and my wife's name is Karen. |

posted 12-11-2003 07:16 AM
Well I pretty much went with Skidmore because it was my last name (Bill Skidmore) and I didn`t think the initial thing would work so well for a screen name. - B.S. In fact my other schemes didn`t work so well in real life either. My discount tire store "Skidmore Tires" didn`t seem to catch on for some unknown reason and I`m not even going to go into my line of custom underwear that didn`t seem to sell either ..... LOL Who wouldn`t want Skidmore jockey briefs? |
Bob Miller POA Site Supporter Prowler Junkie From:Alexandria, Virginia, United States |
posted 12-11-2003 07:43 AM
Obviously I use my real name "Bob Miller." Perhaps it's due to a lack of creativity or maybe laziness... My nickname is "Toolhead" which I picked up and carried with me for all of my many years in the USAF. Explanation? I don't think so... |

It's great seeing all of the creativity and thought that go into some peoples selection of names. I once was Mayor of Sterling, Colorado. I had a great time as Mayor, but am having a great time as FORMER mayor, kibbutzing from the outside, prowling instead of politics, and being a Paramedic while running my ambulance service here! Now I hope to have time to attend some events and put faces to names and meet Jack the Wonder Dog! |
idive POA Site Supporter Prowler Junkie From:Texas USA |
posted 12-11-2003 02:14 PM
I learned to dive before going on my honeymoon in Mexico in 1991. I thought at the time I would only dive the one time, but found out it was addictive. I have tried to get in at least one dive trip a year since, but have missed a year here and there. When I got online back in 96 I found out that in chatrooms, you needed an ID, and that people were making them up instead of using their real name. I tried several and they all were taken. When I plugged in idive, it was available. I've used that ID in every chat forum I've been in since, (as available, or a derivitive thereof) so people from one room to the next would know it was me. I've always been known for my quick wit and using double connotations as well, so there are some minuses to the ID. In some rooms they think I'm there for more than chat, and since its a genderless ID, sometimes they think I'm a girl. We've all seen the double connotations like: Firemen like it hot, Racers do it faster, etc... Well, I came up with a couple for me as idive, in an attempt to resolve the gender question, but I think it best left to the imagination what they are. Now, the people I talk to online know who idive is, so why change it at this point? ------------------ This message has been edited by idive on 12-11-2003 at 02:16 PM |
