I don't know what the remainder of the painting process is. I don't believe that the paint was fully cured as these pics(except 1st one) were taken less than 3 minutes after it came out of the oven. I'm sure everthing was still hot. Nobody is touching !!! ------------------ TonyG@ProwlerOnline.com |

Wow--- If it looks anywhere near like your first picture, it is going to be HOT HOT HOT. Did I see somewhere, we can take delivery at the plant? If so can we make arraignments to have it shipped directly to us instead of the dealer we bought it through? |

I was at MSX 2 years ago and they are far from being done once it comes out of the oven. It gets inspected and defects identified. on to next step of repairing all defects and then to another inspection, then final buff for an outstanding paint job. The gloss is on it's way Looks like it might end up being THE BEST COLOR ------------------ |

Larry, I just read your post-why would they have to do anything after final shooting? Should be smooth as glass from the oven |

I dont know what they call it in new york but a guy with wet sand paper in his hand was doing a yellow hood in the room next to the wash bay. He may have been just practicing. It is worked over several times as Wilcat just explained, a very time consuming task. ------------------ |

I saw hoods with grease pen marks for a defect we could not even see, they have a 4 bay polishing and buffing area, the wet sand or "what ever you want to call it" area is right before the first wash stall. The E coat is painted with color compatable primer and the E coat is sanded first.Primer sanded, painted, baked cleared, clear sanded and if defects are found goes to repaint, I forget the limit of mils of paint before it all has to come off and start over. Amazing. Also to all the people who dont drive their car in the rain you should see the hurricane forced wind driven water bath they give the car at CAAP. Short of driving it in a lake you couldnt get it ant wetter. ------------------ |

Interesting Bobcat. Thanks for the info. Maybe the guy was scuffing up for another coat. In NY, we call sanding and buffing after clear and baking-"poor prep" Maybe production line standards are different then modern quality body shops. ------------------ |

Al. It may be a combination of the two... Or., maybe in between a custom shop & good body shop. At the MSX plant they paint everything by hand like a body shop. As compared to most car mfg where robots do all the painting... All the panels for that particular Prowler are on that tub getting painted... There are a couple of other items like side mirrors that are painted somewhere else & than assembled on the car. I think the MSX paint process is another unique process to the Prowler as compared to other production cars... Can't remember if they paint the Viper panels there or not... ------------------ |

Larry,Bobkat and Laddie, whatever method they choose, its still a testimony to DC, or more likely, the standards set by Plymouth and followed by DC, that the finished product be of such high standards. Good job guys This message has been edited by butchcee on 11-29-2001 at 11:19 AM |

They have a large repaint area as well, MSX is a non union contractor to DC and they just paint. Its really something to see and all that yellow was awesome. ------------------ |

Laddie, The Vipers get painted at ASC. Process is similar to what Bob has decribed with the wet sanding and hand shooting. ------------------ |

I have been to MSX, I truely enjoyed the visit. I also have a CUSTOM Repainted car. Do you think my car came out that slick without some 2,000 grit wet sand paper and 10,000 grit compound? YES, THEY DO STILL WET SAND For a slick paint job 99% of them MUST be color sanded I'm Sure someone can clarify this for me. I read it somewhere. Paint is graded. The Prowler has a much better paint job than the normal. Great pains are taken to insure we all get this quality. The standard cars out of the factory have a rating in the 40~50 but the Prowler has an 85. It has been awhile and I do not remember the details. ------------------ |

Larry, You are correct. It is impossible to get a perfectly flat,(no orange peel, like on standard prod. vehicles), glossy paint job without color sanding and buffing the paint. Here are the proper steps: Prep the car for paint, apply the base color, apply the clear coat, bake in the oven at around 140 degrees for 1-2 hours, wet sand with 1000 grit, wet sand with 1500 grit, and finally wet sand with 2000 grit, then buff w/compound to remove wet sand scratched, then polish with a glazing compound. Very labor intensive but worth the finished look. The Prowler has one of the nicest paint jobs of any OEM vehicle. ------------------ |
