Hey All, The market for Prowlers have really went down hill in the last year. You couldn't even get Prowler for less then $40k and now they are selling well below that for used ones. New ones you can buy for sticker no Problem. ------------------ This message has been edited by spoons on 05-21-2001 at 07:46 AM |

Considering most high $ exotic's loose around 1/3 of their original sale value in the 1st year alone, I'd say we are doing rather well still. The problem is, why pay a premium for used when new are readily availiable? Whenever that happens, most of the time, used prices plumet. I'd personally get rather ill having paid 350 K plus for a new Ferrai to sell it for 100K less a year later! ------------------ |

Prices got rediculous when speculators thought the prowler was dead when plymouth died. When it didn't, prices came down (alot in most cases) for new ones and that dictates what a used one is worth. Also, since this is a free market society, you can't force everyone to raise the price of their car. If one guy doesn't, then another will follow suite to sell his and so on. Also, if you are trying to ask top dollar or over sticker for a used one and dealers are selling new ones for below sticker, well, you get the picture. ------------------ Mods: 2001 Speed Yellow Porsche Cabriolet |

Massey Chrysler-Plymouth in Daytona Beach has two blue 01 Prowlers. They are still adding an additional $3995 to the sticker for "Additional dealer Margin". Apparantly they have not got the word on Prowler prices going South. They do not expect to get the additional 4K but it helps them to negotiate an overall higher price when you start from $49K instead of the MSRP of $45K. This dealer also has mediocre service. |

Well, here we go again!!! There have been several discussions about collectible value of the Prowlers. The question that has been asked many times over is... did you buy your Prowler for collectibilty value or just because you wanted one to have and enjoy? When the Prowler concept vehicle became a reality, Chrysler's mission was to offer the car at a price just under $40,000. It was originally announced that the price would be $39,000 plus tax and freight. Now, think about these points: 1. Upon release of the vehicle, the dealers proceeded to and continue to demand exorbitant prices for the cars, which a lot of people paid and pay. Technically, the car was not worth those prices. 2. As everyone knows, the minute you leave the dealership, a vehicle depreciates in value. Prowler depreciation has actually been miminal in comparison to the average vehicle. However, it is highly unlikely that anyone who paid the exorbitant prices the dealers were/are demanding for the car could expect to re-coup their money based on the current prices and availability. 3. A car is only worth only what someone is willing to pay for it. The biggest issue with a low volume car is matching willing buyers with the sellers. 4. The only time value is an issue is when you are willing to sell it, if you are willing to sell it. 5. In terms of overall resale value, completely stock, low-mileage, unmolested vehicles always bring the highest price in general vs. the same vehicles that have been modified or customized. The only exception would be a celebrity-owned vehicle or a race car with documented history. 6. With regard to Todd's statement about paying premium for used vs. buying new......the only exception might be to obtain a particular color Prowler that is no longer readily available. Just my opinions and food for thought!! ------------------ |

CJ - good explanation. Remember: A vehicle is worth WHAT it will BRING in CASH, TODAY. ------------------

At Massey - Yardley in Hobe Sound, FL they are sill getting $54k+ for there Prowlers and selling them. I guess the market in southern FL is the best for the Prowler. Some wealthy people here see the price and don't question it. I agree with Todd, Most exotic cars out there lose about 1/3 of there value after a year. Look at Porsche, Ferrari, BMW's and etc. I guess we are holding on pretty good as far a resale value. Now if they only stopped production. ------------------ |

quote: I watch this market pretty regularly and here are my observations: A used Ferrari 360 Modena brings more used then ordering new. A used Mercedes CLK 430 cabriolet can be traded back to most Mercedes dealers for about $5K more then what they were bought for. If you bought a Porsche Boxster back in 1997 and sold it today, you could get almost what you paid for it. How many other 4 year old car purchases can do that? If you had ordered a new Porsche 911 Turbo, took delivery of it and drove it for 6 months, you could then sell it back to the same dealer for $20K more then you bought it for. ------------------ Mods: 2001 Speed Yellow Porsche Cabriolet |

Went to a local Chrysler dealer today to exchange a center cap and noticed they had a Mulholland in the showroom. Asking price: $60K...that's $46K base and $14K for "Dealer Installed Options". Two different sales guys couldn't tell me what those options were, but the car did have a LoJack sign on the windshield. I don't think the sell-a-Prowler-for-MSRP concept has filtered to Pitre Chrysler yet... |

This is not a car for everyone. At some point, supply catches up with demand (as it is doing with the PT Cruiser). When the car was first introduced, the dealers gouged prices, and remarketed the cars, which spent more time in auctions than with real owners. Although Chrysler insisted the dealers are "independent", and not subject to control, IMHO they could have done a better job of disciplining the marketing of the car. It left a residual bad taste, and complicated distribution, since many dealers sold cars to people outside their trading areas. I actually paid 5 grand less for my '01 than I paid for the '99, even though the sticker on the '01 is nearly 5 grand higher. One other thing to remember. For many first time exotic car buyers, a car like this is acquired second hand. In economic downturns, my experience has been that this category of buyer is among the first affected, and cannot be counted on to drive the market. |
