Just wondering how many Cat owners actually own your car(s)outright or have them financed? I took a six year loan out on mine. $23k and five more years to go! Then it's really mine! Might make a good poll question? Blue collar, but living large.... John ------------------ PROWLEN.... John (-: |

Like CJ mine is paid for as are my other toys. My Dad always said if it is a toy and you can't pay for it don't buy it. Easy to say but hard to do. In any case, it has worked for me over the years. Scot ------------------ |

CJ....your post reminded me of a funny story....a couple of years ago I sold my wifes Sebring Conv.(she didn't know it) and bought her a Prowler for Christmas '98...it was a Black 99...well, on Christmas eve I took her across town to show her the car....well, she was NOT IMPRESSED !!! Her first words were "It's wintertime and you get me a car I can't drive anywhere for months ??? " The car was not a hit to say the least...I ended up driving it for about 9 mos and sold it....then I bought another Prowler and so on...but she HATED that car...I own quite a few different businesses and a couple of them are auto rental stores....I fixed her up with a rental car that winter and that spring bought her a Corvette.... ------------------ |

I wrote one check for mine. I don't like to finance vehicles. All our 3 vehicles are paid for. I feel very fortunate being in a position where this is possible. Alex ------------------ This message has been edited by Alex on 04-23-2001 at 09:55 PM |

Paid for. Only financed one vehicle in my life and that was in 1964. We've worked very hard, and are fortunate. |

I guess I think differently when it comes to things like this. I financed my Prowler with no down payment except for the equity of the in-and-out trade-in deal I arranged. When I purchased the Prowler, I simply walked in with a check from the bank and a check for my equity and was on the road five minutes later. By far the easiest and most hassle-free car purchase I have made. My thinking on this is that I financed the Prowler at around 7% (+/- 1%). I had no cash outlay except for the equity of the trade-in. I drove off with the car with no money out of my pocket and in turn had +$40,000 cash-in-hand to invest as I wished. As long as I am getting a return of more than 7% on my investment, I am then making money off of the money that would have gone to paying cash for the Prowler. As long as I am able to make more than the 7% interest, I am doing the equivilant of paying cash for the vehicle, and if it goes over 7%, I am making money and still have a Prowler in the driveway. Someone, please correct me if this doesn't sound right, but it works for me. I use a similar strategy to get my credit cards to pay me to use their services. ------------------ Bill Gallagher |

Bill... my thoughts exactly... making more then the car interest with that money is easily done... when it is all over, you have a free Prowler. ------------------ |

Bill, Try 13% if the loan is 7%... If you get 13% on an investment, and it's considered short term capital gains then the PROFITS are taxed at 44%. If you hold the investment for over 12 months and one day then it's taxed at the income level of 26%......... So if you figure keeping your investment for over 12 months, you need to get a return of about 9-11% (lazy to do the math ;-)) Hope this helps in some regards... -Ben ------------------ |

Ben, thanks for the insight. I was using my own fuzzy math and guestimating the numbers myself. I was basing it on about 7% interest on the 5-year loan with an average 5 year return of 15% per year from investing. The benefit I see is I get the car and have the cash in hand, with the ability to make money off of it. If I paid cash for the car, I woudl leave with the car and no cash in hand. Personally, I prefer to have both. I am going to do the same when I buy my house: Put no money down (or as little as possible), gang the principle payments, and pay the thirty-year mortgage off in less than 15 years. This way I have a Prowler in the driveway of my new home with cash in hand. Works for me. ------------------ Bill Gallagher |

Yup! I strongly agree with not paying for a vehicle with cash. You lose your $ right off the bat. Just be sure you don't miss a payment and you're golden. -Ben ------------------ |
