I have never paid cash for a vehicle. I prefer to use other peoples money. It takes me a couple years that way, but right now I own everything but the Prowler.

Thank you for the response so far.

I usally go with the saying "if you
can't pay cash, you can't afford it",
but made an exception when I financed the Prowler.

I would have prefered to pay cash if I had it. I was curious how others with the cash would approach the subject.

I see that there are various opinions on the subject of financing vs cash in the bank and interest rates.

I am just glad I "did it", and the fun factor outweighs the dollars and cents!

Hey, a few more post and I could win a Hat!

It could happen..... or not...

Making a return of 7% or whatever is all well and good if it happens. As we all know the stock market hasn't been exactly kind these last few months. And we have Wall Street geniuses here. No one lost a dime, right.

Right Bob. I can honestly say I didn't lose a dime. The denominations were much larger.

If you invest your money long-term (for example for the five years of financing the Prowler loan) in mutual funds and know when to switch (or have it set up to switch) between bonds and stocks and so forth, you can AVERAGE about 15% interest a year. This doesn't mean that it will not go below 15% (such as right now) but this also doesn't mean that it will not go higher than 15%. Just an AVERAGE of 15% a year over the 5-year period of the loan. Check into this, you may be surprised how effective it is.

Bill,
I'm sure your right. My point, I guess is that it sure takes a LOT OF TIME, patience, and knowledge to research companies and bonds etc... And I don't have a whole lot of all three. I just paid for the car and now have to start saving again. That is if I quit buying other toys and modifications for the car.

well... I make my living off of having money to make money with... spending it on toys is a good way for me to simply not have any at all. Finance is the only way here.

I paid $45,000 cash two years ago. That money in mutual funds would be worth about $22,500 right now, the way I figure it. The Prowler is worth more than that. I have the satisfaction of not making a payment. I prefer it my way, but everyone is certainly entitled to do it the way they prefer and they way that suits their financial needs. How much interest TOTAL do you pay on a $40,000 loan over 4 or 5 years. I'll bet it is in the $10,000 range. Just my way of looking at it.

I apologize if it seems like I have tried to drive my point across. I just get a little excited when it comes to working the system a little to my advantage. Just don't get me started about credit cards. If I could convince people to better manage their credit cards, the credit card industry would go bust.

Ok, here is a funny story. I "ordered" my Prowler from M&L Motors in Lexington, NC. My friend, Al Stokes, from Welcome, NC, actually got me on awaiting list in the number 2 slot. The dealer agreed to sell at list whenever the car came in (with no promises on the color). In December 1999, after waiting patiently for 3 years, I finally went to the Chrysler web page and asked for a quote. The web page gave me a list price quote at a dealer 20 miles from my house (Dokmo in Northfield, MN). I went in asked for the owner and told him I had a quote and wanted to buy the car. He said, leaning on the red prowler, which car? I said, that one right there!
2 hours later, after he spent time with his finance guy trying to talk me into a lease, I wrote a check and drove the car home. I am glad I paid cash, and I am still convinced this is the only way to buy a toy. I have 6 cars and have always paid cash.

Yeah, I have the pink on mine.
I don't like to finance toys either.
But you do tend to feel the pain more when you sell them, believe me!

Todd, pay them off in full every month. Don't pay a yearly fee, get a free card. I know a guy who pays his son's college tuition on his Discover Card and then pays the full amount the next month. Not only does he get to pay the tuition a month later, but he also gets the cash reward for using the card. I'll bet they hate him.
I got a Discover card just to get a free CD at a concert. I didn't use it for the first two years and then got some promo item since I was such a good customer. Makes you wonder, doesn't it!! I finally used it to buy 6 season tickets to Ky. Speedway last year and they turned it down since I had never used the card. They thought it was stolen and someone was at the (Horse) race track trying to use my card. The security people called me twice bragging how they had foiled a theft. I was thrilled since the seats were awarded by the post mark on the envelope. I then called the race track telling them my tale that it was the credit card company's fault but apparently they had heard that story once or twice before and didn't believe me. We finally got it straightened out. Ironically I just recvd. this years tickets but only got the tickets for the last race of the year. I called and they told me that is all they mailed so far. There is a race next month, June, July and August and I recvd. the August race tickets ONLY. Next year someone else will be in charge of procuring the tickets. Don't use credit cards unless you have to, pay them in full and NEVER be late with a payment or they will steal you blind.

Unfortunately... that's something most people cannot afford to do (pay them off at the end of every month). I count myself as among those unlucky average.

Todd,
Sorry for not responding back sooner. Ed pretty much summed up most of what I was going to post, except for I use my Discover credit card for everything I buy - groceries, clothes, gas.. everything. They give you 1% back on purchases in the form of cash at the end of the year. That is nice because I equate it to instead of paying 6% sales tax, I am now paying 5% because I will be getting 1% back. I hate using cash money to pay for purchases, so I simply charge everything and write one check at the end of the month. That is the key - to pay off your balance at the end of the month. If you don't, then none of the above works to your advantage because you get 1% back from Discover, but you are paying +20% in interest and you possibly will never get ahead. A trick I used during college (and still use it from time to time just to mess with the system ) was to use 2-3 credit cards and transfer the balance from card to card every month. I would simply make a decent payment, more than the minimum, and then transfer the balance to one of the other cards. That way I was paying 0% interest and still not having to pay off the whole amount at one time. I just did the same thing this month when I bought my Prowler Pro gears. I could have simply paid for them and that would be the end of it, but instead, I am going to transfer the balance from card to card and pay it off at about $500/month and keep that money in my account where I will still make interest on it for a couple months. One way of looking at it is that I just gave myself a $2000 4-month loan with no interest. My advice would be to look at your own situation and see if it is possible to integrate any of this. Below are the key points of managing credit cards:

- Get a Discover Card or some other card where you get something back (cash or equivalent)
- Pay off the balance every month
- If you cant pay off the balance monthly, prepare to transfer the balance to another card (preferably one that will give you something back)

Most people go wrong thinking if they make the minimum payment they are getting ahead. The sad thing is that if you make the minimum payment every month, it could take you 7-11 years to pay off the balance. The key is to get ahead and manage the balance, and if possible, make it work to your advantage.

Hope that helps.

Speaking of Demographics, it seems that I read somewhere early on that the targetd average Prowler owner would be 53 and have an annual income over $125,000.

How is the average doing? I think that the average age is slighty less, and have no idea about the "average" income, other than I only make about a third of that!

Like I said... blue collar and living large!

Love you guys!

Maybe one of you guys could help me out with my 401K?

Lots of choices but have been conservative and kept it all in the "Stable Value at a measly 6.2% annual.

Better than some of the losses I have seen though.

OK... geting off topic here...sorry.

Did somone say "Chick Magnet".. yeah!

Didn't hear anyone say "Cop Magnet"... 3 tickets in my first six month, and I had a clean record...

Ouch! I am on my best behaviour now!
Slow and easy... (most of the time )

Yeah.. right.. I am encourageable...

We made our deal with the local dealer in early 1996. We offered to buy a Prowler for my wife and pay sticker for it. My dealer said he would never get one, but he agreed with the deal. We at the time had the cash. In December of 1996 my wife was told she had cancer. My dealer got the Prowler in October 1999. The treatment for the cancer got the cash so we got a loan for about half the price. My dealer was willing to make us a better deal than sticker but I stuck to the deal we had already made. So he gave us the car cover. My wife got to ride in her Prowler but she never got to drive it. She went to be with the Lord April 2000. Glad the bank was there for this one.
