Just got my second ticket, all alone on a country road (mostly). CHP gets me coming toward me around a turn, 77 in a 55. Guess it's time for radar. I am very relunctant. I searched the archives and found most people think Valentine is the best. Any update?????? I hate to drive paranoid and it seems to me all the detectors do is give off false readings. I would like your opinion, my concerns, priorities are: 1. False readings. Accuracy I assume these are leagal in California, correct?? Thanks in advance for your input. MAN JOHN! A second ticket? Your on a roll now. I don't think you can get driving school for the second one? Now you know what I'm going thru with my paranoia. Instead of calling you silver bullet, I will have to change your banner to TICKET MAN! |

Thanks Lance, will do. Any other input from others would be appreciated, I really don't like them. They seem to mislead more often then not as far as I can tell. Not paranoid Dan, (although I do think these things tend to come in threes) But I think I may need to invest in one. I haven't had a ticket in over 10 years till last month leaving Paxton. Wonder if I'm liveing right?? ------------------ |

John, Watch out, things normally come in three's. Can't answer about the radar detector. You might email Larry, he had one before the the Grand Canyon trip and got another one there. Maybe he will lend you one to try out? ------------------ This message has been edited by CA Phil on 02-18-2001 at 09:08 PM |

Hey now, you can't hide from the red dot and you can't detect an instant on laser gun until its too late. If I get one more ticket, no more license for the fatman..............funny thing is none have been in my prowler yet...........guess which is the "key" word there! |

John - I did a ride along last July in Michigan, with Sondra's trooper son. The instant ON and Off feature they use makes radar detectors basically worthless. His unit also had front and rear guns, and after seeing first hand how it works, I decided not to upgrade my present unit, knowing it probably is a waste of money. The only good thing I could say about this experience, was that he gave everone 15MPH over limit with No Stop - at 16 over, we were on the chase. ------------------

Thanks Larry I appreciate it. I went to the web site Lance recommended for comparisons and decided to try the Beltronics 980 with guaranteed upgrades for a while. But I think you may be right about having null effect at some moments. We shall see. Thanks all for your input. |

Larry S, you are so full of it. When you go on a ride along it is customary to sit in the FRONT seat and not have your hands cuffed behind your back. Good bluff, though. Did Sondra buy your version?? |

Just as Gary C. said, Valentine One is the only ONE. Just got back from Fl. average speed 72mph including stops. Just make sure you have some idiot in front of you going real fast and keep them about 100- 500 feet in front of you, this will help more than anything. Got a response from my detector at about 87 mph from the laser band and had an idiot in front of me and they got a ticket, I kept on driving. Just remember that just like in football, you always need a blocker! |

ED - it was a fun and informative experience. We were 15 minutes out on road, and this new black Honda is flying in the opposite direction. 75 in 55, U ball, and off we go. This 23 yr old blonde ( 5'1" 100# ) was driving alone towards Detroit at 5:15 pm. What is your hurry miss? I got to be at the airport by 7:00 pm! (we are 30 minutes south of airport). I get to make the first stop call - I look at her, look at her drivers license, and look at her again = kick her loose! No ticket! I'm a sucker for that pretty face she had. The next six stops, all guys, got tickets! John - whatever you do, just make sure they (law) never sees triple digits on their readout. They have no humor at that point! ------------------

Laser units must be stationary, not rolling down the road. They point down on you and pull trigger = bingo! Best advice I've seen, is let someone ( Dan and Gary ) be out in front of you! Way out in front of you . But not when racing! ------------------

jd2ksilver, I currently refuse to buy one for myself, afraid it will make me a speed demon, but some of the higher priced detectors offer a "we will pay your ticket" thing. Unfortunately, this doesn't help with insurance. As far as the instant "on" radar, yes if a cop singles you out; you are toast, but usually there will be other people he is checking before you and THEN the detector will pick it up. Hope this helps. ------------------ |

District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) - RADAR-detectors are illegal. Illinois - Not regulated in passenger vehicles, but they are illegal used in commercial motor vehicles (which is redundant legislation, since Federal law makes that illegal in any U.S. state anyway; BUT, some states like to have it in their lawbooks so that they can charge added fines and penalties that would go to the state). Minnesota - Radar detectors not specifically regulated, BUT - hanging things from windshields not permitted. So obviously, this would include radar detectors if they were hung from the windshield. However, I suppose they would be okay rested upon the top of the dashboard. (Hmm. Wonder. Does this include rear-view mirrors, too? [grin]) North Carolina - 02/14/2001 - New York - (1996 law; no changes noted in 1999-2000 Supplement) - For commercial vehicles over 10,000lbs, and any vehicle over 18,000lbs, RADAR-detectors are illegal. [This is already covered by Federal law, as well.] Virginia - (1998 law; no changes noted in 1999-2000 I feel safer knowing where the cops are, In two weeks my insurance went from 1100 a year to 3600 a year because my trusty RD took a dump. All my tickets in the past have been speeders and 98% were radar speeders. I love my V1. Very sensitive and saved my butt too many times to list, just today, three times. I am a SPEED DEMON with or with the RD. I am much better off with the detector, the V1 picks up radar when others don't. The only way to fly. ------------------ |

John, I believe what you want is not a Detector but a scrambler. I'm a part owner in a website that sells a lot of unique items, waiting for it to go IPO. Cell phone accessories and swords and such. One of the items was a Radar detector/scrambler. It claimed to work even on the "off/on" laser untis. It is imported from Japan and was very medium priced for what it does. I'll try to get the name and send it to you. I thought very seriously about buying it but just never got around to it. One fellow I know does have a scrambler and he states he has gone by radar traps and never gotten a ticket. He says it is like driving in "Stealth" mode.... I'll get back to you with what I can get on it. ------------------ |

Have used radar detectors for over 15 years; am a strong believer in them. I've always used lower cost units. They have saved me from tickets dozens of times. Like was previously said, they don't help from the 'instant on' radar that some police use. Best strategy is to be in with other cars - being the only car in sight and speeding equals getting a ticket. BTW radar detectors don't help a bit with the 'eye in the sky' approach to catching speeders. |

Some years ago I had to go to a driver program in New Jersey. I got caught on the Jersey Tpk at over 100. Dont know why I didn't get locked up, but I had to call some central agency to find out what the fine was. There was no reciprocity with N.Y. at that time.I cried the blues to the woman on the line and told her my wife was leaving me and I had to get home, blah blah, blah. Well, she took pity on me and bought my story. There was a sizeable fine and I was told to attend a driver improvement course in N.J.. The course was given by a Jersey State Trooper. He was honest and said that we didn't know how to speed! He suggested as Nelson said-hang behind someone else and dont drive in the passing lane except to pass. This stuck in my mind and I've been pretty lucky with tickets since then. ------------------ This message has been edited by butchcee on 02-21-2001 at 03:11 PM |

Thanks all, and Fred, I'm looking into that today. Hmm these scramblers cant be legal? Wonder what would happen if caught with one? I think you all are right about staying with the pack sort of. I don't mind that, I'm not at full race when I drive my car. I just like to go at a nice clip. This message has been edited by jd2ksilver on 02-21-2001 at 08:59 AM |
