We are thinking of putting a checkered floor on our garage so our Prowler and T-Bird get some respect...LOL.

For those of you who have finished your floor, any tips on materials to look out for/ or avoid?

Would regular floor tiles hold up, or do we have to get specific tiles?

Any advice is appreciated...Thanks!

BTW: we saw in the Frontgate catalog an offer of B&W tiles that interlock, but they were $5 per tile! No way are we spending 2K to floor our garage!

the only thing bad is the white tiles turn brown from the tires.I waxed mine all the time and just can't get rid of them. looked nice when it was new but now a little shaby.i used the asphalt tiles.

We put ceramic tile, linoleum tile and painted our garages. The ceramic tile was the hardest to put down but was worth all the work. It is no different than laying tile in the house. Same procedure. We were hesitant about laying ceramic, of all the rumors we heard. But if you ever went to a dealers showroom, its ceramic. Put it down right , no cracking from the car weight. Tile is cheaper than linoleum ($4 sf), we got it for a little less than a $1 square foot.

Of course, we installed it ourselves:

Here is what we did in two of the garages:

He's right, also get the ones with clear coat on them. I have to have mine waxed all the time.

THANKS GUYS!!!

Those are some valuable tips...All your advice has been carefully noted!

It's comforting to see ceramic tiles can be had for less than a buck per sq ft. $400 would do our garage.

I bought the "Dream Garages" book and inside is a checkered floor...get this: This guy put down PORCELEIN tiles. They floated on a layer of teflon, cork, and wood, so they wouldn't crack.

Thanks again!

There is a type of float board (sorry, don't know real name of it) that they can lay under tile where the floor or surface may fluctuate a bit.

Since all beach houses are built up on stilts, the floors tend to float a bit so we had this done to ours. They then used some type of slightly expandable grout and mastic to hold the tiles in place.

You can't tell the difference other then our floor is more insulated.

Peel and Stick from Lowes... they have 18" squares made up of 2-white 9" tiles and 2-black 9" tiles as a single 18" piece.. being you are putting down 4 colors at once as a single tile it is pretty quick and reasonable.

For the brown tire marks... white vinegar does an excellent job of removing these.

GOOD LUCK, Jay

I also would like black and white floor and soon will have one, but my thoughts are to get some diamond plate, chrome or polished like for a driveway to park on, two strips on each car and b/w the rest in stick downs, that way the tires wont discolor the white tiles and the shinny parking strips would look cool.

Great idea on th strips, we have had our tile down for over four years and still no black marks. We just dust it now and then and around every three month we mop(swab) with cold water. We don't race around but we do turn the wheels on the tile. NO marks, now linoleum is another story.
