I believe the SSR was already designed before Lutz joined GM.

The SSR is over weight, over priced and under powered.

It was suppose to have a V8 350 HP, weight less than 3000 lbs., and be priced around $35k.

But it's really going to have a V8 290 HP, weight 3800 lbs, priced $42k and 0-60 mph approx 7.1 sec.

Not to mention they will be make 20,000+ units per year... so any moron that pays a dime over stick is crazy. They will be a "dime a donzen" in 2 years like th T-birds are right now. The only thing the SSR has above the Prowler is the V8

It's an American car/truck with an electric top, storage space, two more cylinders and a retro look that I really like. I congratulate any American auto maker that has the courage to break away from the bread-boxes that contaminate our highways. Don't get me wrong I still think the Prowler is a piece of art and I wouldn't trade mine in for an SSR but I sure wish I could have both. My Chevy's(Corvette,Camaro,Astro and Cavalier) have been good to me. With the exception of the Cavalier, it has 257,000 miles on it and a month ago I had to have my first waterpump changed. The SSR would make a great garage-mate for my Kat. JMO Jeff

I think the SSR is great, I doubt they will sell as many as has been quoted here but they will sell.

The first year SSR's may have the 290 H.P. engines but each year that will grow, another thing to remember is that Chevy has under rated that engine while Chrysler has over rated the Prowler's engine.

Given the choice I'd take a SSR over the Prowler.

I'll hold my evaluation until I see one on the street. Seeing a catavan of Prowlers takes your breath away, art in motion.

I have not talked to anybody who has said they are going to buy the SSR. Most I talk to think it looks ok. I think it looks ok. But the specs are scary. It has a v8 but weighs in at 3800 lbs.

Like mentioned, the looks of the Prowler are breathtaking. I look at these other "retro" cars, such as the T-Bird and SSR and go, " Uh, that's nice".

For instance, I was at a car show last month where the 2003 Viper was parked among older GTS and RT/10 models. Nobody was looking at it. I showed it to some people I was with and they could not believe that it was a Viper. I feel the same with these other cars. They look different enough to be somewhat unique, but still manage to blend in with all the other cars on the road.

We saw a yellow SSR at Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise in 2001. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally like the look but not nearly as much as the Prowler. Plus the 3800 pounds is attributable to the fact that it is a truck, not a car.

The SSR will be produced in much higher volume than the Prowler and will probably follow other GM vehicles with powertrain upgrades as time goes on. On the plus side, it does have storage space, retractable top, and a V8. Most certainly aftermarket companies will offer lots of modifications for the SSR.

It's got more power to strat with then a Prowler, a retractable HARD top, will sticker for $4K less then Prowlers do, and it's 0-60 time is good.

As far as the 20+ a year being produced, keep in mind, the more produced, the more aftermarket places and parts there will be. Not to mention those parts being inexpensive.

With any aftermarket company, it's a percentages game. They know thta not every Prowler or SSR owner is going to buy their product. If say, they figure only 10% will, 10% of 11,000 is 1,100 whereas 10% of 20,000 is 2000 (and that is just for the first year.

Before the Prowler was actually for sale they said the sticker was going to be $35K. I'll believe the price they are quoting on the SSR when I see one actually sell for that amount. I have already heard of dealers saying they will be selling over MSRP. I like the looks of the SSR but there is absolutely no way I would trade my Prowler for one. At the auto show this year the SSR was getting very little attention. I personally think the Chevy SS Coupe concept is a better looking vehicle than the truck.

I really like it too. The retractable hard top is cool and the big wheels (19"-f, 20"-r) too. I think that there will be a lot of aftermarket engine options as this engine is used in many GM trucks already. The SSR engine will be in aluminum instead of iron though, I don't know if that will make a difference for mods or not.

It's power / weight is better than the Prowler's, neither a stellar performer.

I really doubt that they will be able to sell 20,000 per year. I just read that Ford will be discontinuing the Tbird in a couple of years, noting slow sales. They expected to sell 25,000 and sold only 19,000 the first year. Also like the Tbird, the SSR has been slow to be released, it was originally expected late 2002, now late 2003.

I still think it is cool. In a couple of years I'd like to get one if I can afford it.
