just bought my first 99 black kat and i have a few questions. Is full synthetic ok and what weight and brand do people recomend when changing the oil? thing rides worse than a jeep wrangler but i heard a brace across the front helps. i see that people use an aluminum square tubing but aluminum flexes too. So i want to try a steel L-shaped rod. Is this a bad idea? I figured steel would flex even less and be that much better? Recall info. I have the info but who can i call to see if any of the service's have been performed already? Do i just call a crysler dealer? Is it free? it was built 11-98. thanks Jason ------------------ SigEp VA Mu "Brothers out there with a little HFF action please say hello, I look foward to meeting you always." |

Congrats Snapcase! Alot of us use Mobil 1 10w30. Once you go to synthetic it's never a good idea to go back to regular oil. I use the high-end Fram filter. Check out the Classified section for the top brace. A couple of people (Darcy (LynnPT) and someone else) are selling the solid aluminum top brace that works great. I installed it on my 2000 and noticed a major difference. Any dealer should be able to pull the warranty work log for you as long as you have the VIN when you go in. I've done it before by going to the service manager and having him pull it up on their computers - it didn't cost me anything to have them pull it. Good luck! Welcome SnapCase, I still run regular Oil - only have 1000 miles on the car. I understand that synthetic leaks after a period of time - still asking people lots of questions who use it as I will change the Oil soon and need to make a decision. As I understand it, 99's do ride worse than the 2000 and up due to a suspension change. My 2001's ride is not bad. Also I understand that the Dunlop tires make a huge difference. There are lots of posts about the brace and it's effects on the ride/handling on the board. Do a search and you will see lot's of info on this subject on the board. Good luck - the cars are a blast. The 99 Prowler, I had one, was much more fun to look at then drive. I live in community with speed bumps. When driving the 99 over the bumps slowly, the car would still bounce. The good news came with the 2000 changes. I have had the 2000, 2001 and now the 2002...They drive much better. They won't beat you up after an hour. ------------------ |

Snapcase, congrads on the Cat. The recall for frame problem was all red cars built in the summer of `99 I believe I use Quaker state oil but wanted heavier oil (10/30)than their synthtic, so I went with a blend 20w50. The 3.5 engines have a problem with start up tick and I wanted to see if it helped. It didn't help but it held the oil pressure higher when idling in traffic on hot day with air on. I will continue to use it. Yes the riide on `99 is rough. They changed the tire compound, spring rate and ride height on the 2000's due to complaints from owners of the earlier models. I have a `99 and have driven a 2000, it is a noticable difference. To improve many have changed to the NON RUN FLAT Dunlop tires. The brace is suppose to improve ride and handling but, I have not done this and doubt I will. I can see it take out some of the cowl shake but it greatly improving the ride, I don't see how making the frame stiffer can make the side walls on the tires softer. Consider that you can drill a hole in the tire and then drive 50 miles @ 50 mph, this is where most of the harsh ride comes from. It is one of the most AWESUM cars built, did you buy it for the ride or for the pleasure of owning one of the COOLEST CARS BUILT? ------------------ |

Congrats on the Kat, if you change your oil every 3K miles or so I can't really see using synthetic oil. I have used Valvoline 10W30 oil in all my cars for years and I've been very pleased with it, Purolator Pure One oil filters are a very good choice for the Prowler. If you use use 6061 aluminum for the cross brace you won't find it flexing like some softer aluminum might, don't be surprised if you don't find that big of a improvement after the install, here's a post I had about the upper brace http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/005756.html . Welcome to the POA! You might check out the classified section for a set of 2000 or newer "softer" run flats. This might help the ride a little. Steve ------------------ |

I switched to the brace and to the non run flat Dunlops and got a HUGE difference for the better in handling and ride quality.I haven't driven the second generation Goodyear run flats but I'm fairly knowledgeable about tires and I don't think they can be as good as the Dunlops. JRL red'99 |

Welome. I installed the top brace. The car rides better because the front has less tendancy to jump around on rough surfaces. I have run full synthetic for 15,000 miles. No leaks of any kind. In CO my Kat was running cooler than many others climbing Mt Estes. Maybe the full syn oil helped. Can't hurt. ------------------ |
