Well we found the source of the squeak after a week of looking everywhere. We could not find the source if my life depended on it. Made a phone call to my ?????????? at DC and the put me in touch with ????????? at engineering. This is what I did. I bought a can of Slick One Lubricant in the red can. The lubricant is the best for doors and moving parts to reduce friction to zilch. It has a teflon additive I think. It comes the a long tube for tight places. We sprayed the hood hinges tops and lowers. I told the Prowler mechanic at the dealership, he was in aw. His next step was to tear out my dash 100% and start from scratch. ------------------ |

Apparently the squeak travels to the firewall and resonates out the dash. He said that with the Prowler, you have to keep every moving part lubricated a few times a year. We talked about the MAC braces and he said the car needs to flex like the wings of a plane which are aluminum too. If they do not flex they break or fracture at critical points. He said you should have your frame inspected every 5k. Sasy ------------------ This message has been edited by SasyMama on 04-23-2001 at 01:05 PM |

My two cents on the braces. This car (stock) flexes so much, it flexes right across three lanes of road going seventy or so around a curve when it hits a slight bump. You can feel it literally "walk" across the lanes. I don't think that's too cool, let alone very stable. The braces are what are missing from keeping the car on the road, like it should be. And actually the braces only stiffen the A arms in front and add a little in the back. This car still has plenty of "flex" as your tech put it with the braces. If your going to run the car at all, I highly recommend braces, either MAC or make your own as a lot of people have done. I noticed a HUGE difference, now I trust the car a lot more than before. ------------------ |

John, Should I get the braces? Getting borlas and air intake tomorrow. Is there anything else for better performance besides a supercharger I can do to the KAT. ------------------ |

Sasymama, thanks for the tip on the lubricant. My hood doesn't squeak, but I will keep that in mind when the doors start to squeak. I had one of my braces off (the one above the battery that ties the strut tops together) while having my bumpers painted and the car bounced like a slinky down the road without it. I put it back on when I put my bumpers back on and the car drives smoothly again. My experience with strut tower braces, frame braces and sub frame connectors leads me to feel that with the tighter the rigidity of the frame, the suspension has more ability to do its job. The braces I made for my car have made a significant difference and I do not enjoy driving the car without them. ------------------ Bill Gallagher |

Sassy,, The above post by Bill is pretty typical response to people with braces. I wouldn't run the car hard without them. There is still plenty of flex of the car. As far as upgrades. The gears from Prowler is the next best thing. But that is really your choice, you have a black tie, there is some value to keeping it stock. But the gears is a dramatic change. However, it does make the car shift thru the gears quicker and takes a little to get use to and drive accordingly. Plus highway speeds of 70mph or so where you would normally tach at maybe 2100 you would tach at approx 2900 with the gears. But is a huge difference in acceleration. Thanks I know keeping it stock is the right thing to do. I will have the stock exhaust stored away. I had Dr Ru do extra pin stripping which will increase the vase of the car. He signed it to. My scrapbook is done soon. Some of the extras I have done enhance the car. I think the braces with not take away from the value, but add. I will order them today. How lony to install? Technically, even though the good Doc signed it himself, it still deviates from "factory stock" and either will reduce the actual "collectible" value or keep it "the same as" another Woodward -- but will NOT increase its value. Check with Tangled Up In Blue ... he is a knowledgeable car guy too, and has had many old Mopars and one-of's in his time ... I know from the Corvette hobby that deviations from factory stock drive the price down, unless you find that one person who likes what you've done and perceives added "value" to it. Just an FYI ... ------------------ |
