Hot ProwlWondering if anyone had installed one of the Chrysler RB1 stereo's in the prowler. I saw a posting about it a while ago, but was wondering if anyone had pics on how it fit?

prowler emilVery interested in this as well. Did a search, and looks like a member has tried it, but had issues getting the NAV to work perfectly.

Anyone have any luck?

catfishthe rb1 mopar unit differences are the face plate is different and the nav unit.there are no wires or modules either.that unit when installed at the factory has certain wiring and electrical components that are part of that package to make it work.the prowler does not, cause its not wired for it.us not knowing what they are the components, all you have to do is leave one out and it wont work properly.what are the extra components needed,i dont know and i doubt if a dealer does either.you might be better going to a car stereo shop, and hope they have a very knowledgeable tech,he might be able to make it work.your better off buying a a/m unit that is made to work with any car.its like the diff.between a 2000 and 1999 inside rr view mirror w/the compass and temp.will fit in a 99,but there are no wires or components to make it work.save yourself some grief and get a a/m radio nav unit.

Black Tie 74I installed the RB1 stereo a year ago with no major problems. To look right you will need a body shop to change the squared corners of the center bezel to round. You will need to drill a few mounting holes to mount the radio to the dash, the screws on the RB1 radio are in different location. You also need a factory wiring adapter to go from a 7pin to a 22pin on the RB1.

Things that will not work the steering wheel controls, auto volume control, and I could not get Nav. to work.

The radio works and I use an iPod for my music. The screen will display the song info.

I wanted a stock look with iPod control and to be able to visually see the song info.

catfishif you want to get the nav buy a portable unit or get a a/m radio.

prowler emilThe point was to have it remain stock looking--also, there aren't any NAVs in a 1.5din that I am aware of.
catfishthere must be a way to get the nav on the rb1 working.i would call your local mopar dealer and talk to the service manager and find out who does the repairs for them when a rb1 quits working,do they just replace it or send it out for repairs.if they send them out find out who does the repairs and call them.other than that, youre screwed.you need to find somebody whos familar with the way that radio works.good luck.let us know.im stopping to talk to a dodge service mgr.tomorrow ill ask.

Looks perfect in the dash!! There has to be some way to get that Nav to work. It cant be all that hard.

GenoTexLooks sharp !
enzvoyMaybe this will help
http://home.comcast.net/~mr.scsi3/RB1_RB4.HTML

it says
The RB1 uses DVD technology for the navigation disc, and only reuires one disc, for the U.S. and Canada
do you have the DVD?

Black Tie 74I have a second RB1 in my jeep that I have tried and it does the same thing. The Nav. turns on with the orientation of the arrow on the screen in relationship to the car is about 120-180% off. The screen doesn't update every few seconds like a normal Nav. but only when you travel roughly every half mile or so will the screen update. Also the arrow does not directly follow you but is about a mile or more behind you off at about 120% angle. This major inaccuracy of your location make the Nav. pretty much useless.

I think the problem is the RB1 needs more date than just what the GPS dongle is sending it. I believe it needs speed and compass orientation from the Prowlers computers and that was not wired to the stock radio. There maybe away to tap into that data from the computer to send to RB1 but I don't know how.

dudeuconfusemeI like the stock look, but you have to admit the stock radio that comes in the prowler is poor at best! They could have done a little better job with the sound system.
catfishyou will never get the rb1 to work in a prowler.it will not work correctly in a prowler.chrysler didnt even have nav available when the prowler was designed.

Yeah, your right. 97-02, GPS was still far far from what it is today (if it was even around back then). We're lucky we even got CD changers. We were one step away from having 8-tracks in our prowlers.

I have a question about your installation, and potentially a solution. When you used the adapter, did you connect a Violet with Yellow tracer wire?

In pre 22-pin radio connector Chrysler cars there were three connectors that plugged into the radio, 2 7-pin connectors and 1 1-pin connector(with a violet with yellow stripe wire, this is the PCI bus wire). Here is picture of the adapter that Chrysler sells to convert the 3 connectors to the single 22-pin connector: http://wjjeeps.com/radio_02adaptor1.jpg

The single pin Violet with Yellow connector provides an important signal to the RB1, the PCI-Bus connection. This connection carry's almost all the information provided by the cars computers(speed, temp's, fuel economy info, and almost every other piece of data generated by the cars many computers). Some times this is plugged in the back of the radio (if you have steering wheel audio controls is should be plugged in originally). How ever in some cars it is just taped to the main wiring bundle behind the radio.

With out this Violet with yellow wire your steering wheel audio controls would not work (that's the way it is in the LH-Platform). I have never installed an RB1 in a prowler but have installed them in many other Chrysler cars that were built prior to the introduction of RB1, and even have a friend with an RB1 installed in a 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan.
