I met with the fiberglass shop that Don Ward recommended today and after looking at the pictures, he agreed he should have no problems with the restoration of the top. I am scheduled to bring it in mid February for repairs and primer. I'm still looking at fabrication options on the hinge system, they look too bulky for the hatch and I'm sure something from an existing hatchback will work.

I need to get the hatch to the glass shop to get the window made also.

Well Tom, You now have plenty of time to play. Keep an open mind as to building a go cart with the delivery top. Would be one of a kind at any show and fun for the grandkids

That would be cool Phil, Jason even mentioned it, I told him I need a go cart air patrol like you have too.

Well she has been removed from the shipping skid, cleaned up and loaded into the small trailer to make the trip to the fiberglass shop in Houston one day this week to get refurbished.
Once they repair the cracks, they will prime it and the top will come back home so that the back glass can be made and I get a better plan for the hinges.
I still need the car for it to go on, that's still a future plan as it will be Prowler #4, then back to Houston for install and paint.

Trailer #4 (silver) and Go Kart #4 are here at the house, the Go Kart still needs a complete rebuild.

The top was dropped off at the fiberglass shop today. After looking at it, they said the cracks are not due to a failure of the fiberglass, instead it was too much filler used over the glass. There was probably not a good adhesion, and may have been some water infiltration between the two materials. They are going to bring it back down to the glass and re-lay another coat and smooth it back out without all the body filler. It will come back primed, and the shop will later make whatever adjustments are needed once it's installed on a car prior to final paint.

One step at a time!

Maybe you should ask them about the rear hinges as now would be the time to install them so you don't mess up the body work

Don and I are exploring the possibility of a power lift gate system from another vehicle. Still in early stages of adaptability, so I didn't want to delay the repairs since Danny is entering his busy season at the fiberglass shop with his boat business.
Not sure if it will work or even fit, but I have the time to explore that possibility.

I picked up the delivery hard top from the fiberglass shop this morning. He was able to grind out all of the body filler that was put over the fiberglass and then re-glass with two layers of fiber to smooth it back out. It now has a gray primer coat and it's perfectly smooth with no more cracks. The shop said there was nothing wrong with the actual fiberglass, that the issue was the original attempt to smooth out the glass with body filler which eventually failed and cracked. I am extremely happy with the results!, this is the way it was supposed to look!!!
Now it is time to search for a donor car to place this top on. I will post pictures later, I'm on my way to see the kids in corpus .
Still need to put the rear glass in the hatch and come up with a better hinge system, one step at a time.

Here are a couple of new pics of the refurbished M&L Delivery Top.

I am very happy with how the top looks now. Working on the next stages of the project.

To be continued ...

Well Phil, retirement lasted about 2 1/2 weeks !!!
I had been working with the State and Federal folks on our in vehicle technology over the years, and once I retired, Texas was worried that I would not make myself available to continue doing their presentations.

Here is an article on the technology we piloted:

http://www.rrmediagroup.com/Features/FeaturesDetails/FID/518

I was contacted by DPS and asked to come on board with them, so I am now contracting with the Texas Department of Public Safety to work about 30 hours a week with their Outreach & Education Team on Technology for the next year.

I just returned from the State of Indiana last week where I made a presentation to their DPS.

I did talk to the shop about customizing the fourth gokart, and he said he would look at it during his slow season and make a decision then on if he wanted to tackle that job.

Glad your keeping busy, But just remember, You are still healthy, Have a great retirement, So don't wait to long as you can't buy back extra time. Enjoy it while you still can. The hard top looks good. Did you figure anything out about the hinges you will be using.

I agree Phil, at least with this part-time job I can spend a lot of time with the grandkids and plus make some extra money so that I can buy Prowler number four.
I'm looking at a couple of hinge options, and even maybe a power lift gate system, but not sure if that is going to fit.
I wanted to get the hinges working before I sent it to the fiberglass shop, but he had a limited window of time that he could work on the top, so I will have to be extra careful with fabricating the hinge system. The hinges on the other tops I have seen are a terrible design. I'm looking at a set from a Mercedes that looks like it will match up .
