I did one of my caps that cover the upper ball joints with a magnet and it works well. I used what was called a ring magnet because it has a hole in the middle that fits over the grease fitting.

Hadn't used my stock caps in years, did the Neodymium magnet trick using 1 1/4" x 1/4" w/26lbs of pull using 3M Marine Adhesive 4000 quick set(nothing comes loose from this stuff). They really snap in place. I got the magnets from magnet4sale.com, #ND05572-45NM @ $4.12ea, they also had a 36lbs 1 1/2" x 1/4" magnet @$5.83. Thanks for great idea |

I quite often will stick one to a screwdriver near the handle and use the tip of the screwdriver to fish dropped fasteners out of tight places. Used the same technique to lift sparkplugs out of the deep tubes they are sometimes in. |

Have had this on one of my front wheels since this spring, amazingly simple fix for a poor factory design. A little metallic dust in the centers to clean every week, let's you know there working. |

Watch them closely. As I had them done with magnets for three years. Then all of them started to give way. Magnet would stick to axle and cap would pull right off... Leaving the magnet behind. Clean and reapply one option. Or get Dicks Repair seems more long term... Yes I used the best epoxy known to man.... |

Dick has "repaired" several sets of previous magnet fixes. The good news is the magnet does NOT fall off, just that CHEAP chrome plastic piece falls off. lol Of course, some will think I am promoting Dick's fix. One new cap costs about the same as the four cap fix. |

quote: I was able to talk to Dick at Shipshewana and personally thank him for my repaired caps. I had lost two of those cheap chrome things and never a magnet. One thing good about the magnets is they pick up old rusted pieces from old Fords and Chevys from along the road and collect on the center of your center cap. lol |

quote: I pulled the bolt parts from inside a hardtop with one of these magnets! What a lifesaver! I think the magnet repair works. I have had one cover on with this for 2 years now (broken tabs) and no losses. I did scuff up the magnet and the center cap chrome with sandpaper first and used JB weld to stick the magnet on the cap. |

Never had a magnet repair fail. Both types of repair use epoxy with about the same area of glue. If the magnet stays on then the hub, then it's the epoxy glue job that is failing IMO. |

I did my caps after the first posting, and they are holding and working great. You can get Neodymium magnets at: Apex Magnets; CMS Magnets N45 1 1/4' x1/4"with 26#of pull or N52 same size with 33#'s of pull: K&J Magnets DX44-N52 with 38#'s of pull. I used the N45 from CMS and all 4 were less than $20. Make sure there 1 1/4" x 1/4" that's all the room there is. Scratch up the cap where the magnet will be epoxied. I used 2 part JB Weld and all is still good after 2 years. Great Idea from the originator. |
