This is a really easy center cap repair that you can actually do proactively, before your tabs break. It involves epoxying a magnet to the center of the back of the cap which will contact the end of the threaded axle spindle. The magnets I used are Neodymium which are the strongest and most permanent magnets known to man. The ones in the following pics have 38.13 lbs. of pull. They hold the cap snugly against the rim with a good snap. The first one I did snapped on nice and snug. The second cap needed a bit of forming ( physically bending the cap) to get it to fit the footprint on the wheel nicely. You can do a cap for about $15 plus shipping. If anyone wants to try this mod, PM me for a bit further instruction and what and where to get the magnets. |

Had to re-post this thread because it was trashed by someone trying to discredit it. I just had a request from a member for the part number and source. So here it is: Here is an update (re-post). They just came out with a new magnet that should work even better on this mod. It has 38.13 pounds of pull strength compared to 22.45 lbs. This is awesome pull. If you have 1/4" of space, I would go with this one. It's a little more dough. If you accidentally get 2 together without a separation disk, they are almost impossible to get apart! And they can give you a nasty pinch, so be careful. |

Dick, I can't reply to PMs. But to answer your question: about the same as removing the OEM set-up. If anyone has questions they can email me at info@mancavestuff.ca This message has been edited by beachcat on 12-08-2014 at 10:38 PM |

You need to remove the 5 tabs and the round spring. You can leave the 4 plastic posts in place or remove them also. |

Just an update on this, I have had this modified center cap on my front wheel for over a year now. Have gone over many bumps, some of which I cringed at and it has never come off. If you have ever watched your front wheel in action, it does a lot of bouncing and shuddering. I have taken it off myself a few times just to check it out. So I am confident in it as a viable solution to broken caps. |

How much did you have to spend on magnets, if you don't mind me asking? What will you use to attach them to the caps? The depth of the space is different on the front and rears, just fyi. |

The magnets actually went down in price to $11.57. Shipping is minimal. I have found the front and rear space to be exactly the same. But the magnets come in different thicknesses if need be. |

Then why did you have to "form" one or two of them? What do you use to attach the magnets to the caps? This message has been edited by ed monahan on 03-26-2013 at 09:32 PM |

I just had one that was warped. Maybe some heat got it but it didn't fit right. I was able to manipulate it into shape but haven't had any of those since. Used epoxy to glue. |

Good news! I found a better source for these magnets. You can now repair all 4 of your caps for under $40 including shipping. Just a little self-fulfilling work involved. 30 minutes to repair all 4, tops. No shipping of your caps involved. You need to supply the tube of epoxy. Many will have a tube lying around from a previous use. You only need a small amount. I will ship 4 magnets to you with complete instructions for the repair. PM me if interested. |

Any recommendations on how to remove the caps without breaking them? |

There is a slot in one spot on the cap where you can insert something and gently pry it loose. You can use a popsicle stick or a flat screw driver |

If you use something hard, like a screwdriver, DON'T twist it. |

Which spec magnet do you recommend? DX04 1" x 1/4" 27.2lbs or DX44 1 1/4" x 1/4" 30.9 lbs ? Seems like the 1st are a better deal at $5.44 ea for 24 vs $8.25 ea ( I will need 24 for my cars and trailers). |

I use the DX44-N52 which is 38.13 lbs and is unbelievably strong. You need to use a pry tool to get the cap off. They are 1 1/4" X 1/4" and are $11.57 each. I figure that's pretty cheap per wheel but I've never had as many as you have to do lol. I have tried the 27 lb ones and they do work but I just figure stronger is better. Maybe try one of each so you see the difference and then decide for yourself before doing them all. |

One thing I recommend when gluing the magnets is to take a small die grinder or dremmel and go over the surface of the cap where the magnet is going. Sometimes there is a little knub of plastic sticking up right in the center of the cap that won't allow the magnet to sit flat. I also like to take some of the chrome or paint off in that area so that the magnet is glued to the actual plastic. |

I used Roger's magnet repair and to check the clearence between the center of the center cap an axle. I took some putty and stuck it to the center of the cap then reinstalled the cap then removed it again to measure the thickness of the putty then ordered magnets the correct thickness. I used a Dremel tool to remove the chrome from the inside of the cap, then epoxied the magnet to the center cap. The only problem is the magnets pick up pieces of rusty Fords and Chevys when I drive. lol |

I like to pull up beside the Smart cars just to mess with them. They think their steering has gone bad as they pull towards me. |
