[I just bought a 1999 prowler with 14,600 miles on it and I am having the timing belt replaced because of age . Has anyone else done this ? Was this a good idea or am I just throwing away my money? font=Arial Black]Type your text here[/font]

I would if I were you. The Prowler is an interference engine and if it breaks or jumps times it bends valves and piston destruction.

It has been the topic here many times and many years. Some testing has been done on used timing belts and it shows that they do deteriorate with time. Same goes for belts and hoses.

There really haven't been many cases of them jumping time or breaking but more as a preventative maintenance thing.

By the way, welcome to the POA, we are here to help.

Hey Robin.......As far as the tensioner goes, you replace that as well? The factory service manual says to slowly reset the tensioner in a vice. You done that or is it more wise just to replace it?

It came in the kit so it was and easy choice to just replace it. In my case.

I went through the process of resetting the timing belt tensioner. It is easy to do but you need a vice that opens up really wide. I think I used a drill bit for a pin.
Robins probably came pinned.

I always thought it was spring loaded but found out it is actually a hydraulic unit.

Welcome to the POA. Good idea to R&R the timing belt. At 19 years old the rubber is drying out and becoming fragile. If you have the OEM Goodyear run flats on your vehicle they most likely should be changed as well. Hope you received the maintenance history from the previous owner? Lots of good and honest advise from the knowledgeable people here.

I purchased longer bolts at ACE to "TEMPORARY" back tensioner off further, then just retighten. And if the belt is aligned correctly. Then replace with orginal bolts. Steve

Went by shop replacing timing belt and they had Prowler on lift , and was still working on it . but the old timing belt was in good shape. They did find that the tensioner was not work good ,belt had a lot of slack in it. They are replacing every thing from cam seals out , should be done Friday.

Odd thing about the timing belts.....they may look just fine but fail a burst test. Old and dried out rubber is not worth taking a chance on.

This post motivated me to tackle this while winter is here in PA. All 3 trans fluids changes went perfectly so moved onto this (It was either clean the house or replace the timing belt so it was a no brainier). Not done yet as I'm waiting on the water pump but must say it was easier then I expected so far.

Hi Dale...Thanks for asking

I've done a few over the years, however, this is my 1st Interference motor. I realize there is zero room for error.
fortunately, because this motor was used in countless cars by Chrysler, there are tons of great You Tube videos with step by step on the 3.5 HO engine. Aligning the 3 timing marks while keeping a tight belt as you go is key. I will consult back to the POA if I run into trouble.
Appreciate you worrying about me!!!

Just rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks before you take the belt off.

Will do Dale, thanks... Certainly one of the most important steps... I noticed a good trick from the videos using a wedge (Some use cardboard, others screwdriver) in wedging the new belt between the housing and cam sprockets as you feed it around to keep the slack out and in place all the way to the tensioner. Seems logical and a good tip.

Rich this is the puller the book calls for. It's nothing special except the length is perfect. I had a box of three jaw pullers and they were either too long or too short, this one was just right with the radiator removed.

The shop replacing timing belt called me today said they were having hard time locating the upper hose. They had to get the hoses from mopar at 300.00 for the two [though that was high] but told them ok. Then they ask me to come down to shop that they found the driveshaft noise, it was a broken exhaust hanger. Hope they are right, we will see when they get it running. The job started at 1200.00 and is now over 1500.00, I will post final dollar amount. Should get it Tuesday or Wednesday

Last month someone sold a set in the classifieds for $45. I would ask to see the invoice or receipt for them from Mopar.
