My gas gauge has been good up to this year. All of a sudden it has become unreliable. I should add that the problem is not constant, but intermittent enough to be undependable. For example, I fill up the tank and it reads full. I stop for a coffee, get back in the car .... and it suddenly reads half full. Another example ..... I'm travelling along and the gauge is showing appropriate consumption ...... all of a sudden it sticks at a certain level and does not move. Turning off and restarting the motor does not cure the problem. Has anyone else had this problem .... and if so, what was the cure ? Thanks, |

Happened to me when I first got the Prowler. Brought it to our local Chrysler dealer and the fixed it, some sensor. |

Have lived with a similar gauge issue for the last 13 years. Dealership service department changed out nearly everything in the back except the gas tank itself, with no better results. I tried to tell them about sensor and dash gauge part, but they wouldn't listen...... I just gave up and fuel the tank by the odometer mileage reading. |

Thanks Guys, Can anyone tell me more about the "sensor". For example, how does it function, and where is it located? I hear you Alley, but if possible I'd rather not put up with the situation. |

My Prowler stalled with 1/4 tank of fuel...so I thought. I had it towed (yikes!) only to discover that it was out of gas. The fuel sender went bad, requiring the replacement of the pump assembly. That addressed the problem, but led a saga of problems. You may read more about that on the other thread in the Technical Discussion section if you are so inclined: http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/005137.html Also: http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/005099-2.html This message has been edited by drbutton on 08-23-2016 at 09:39 PM |

Thanks Alley, After reading the posts, I think I now understand why you suggest maybe putting up with the situation, and just keeping track of the mileage after fill up. And thanks to everyone else for their input. According to the posts, it seems that the cure starts with a process of guesswork elimination .... costly and not always effective. Not my cup of tea. The simplest suggestion is to apply Chevron Techron to the gas tank, and so that is what I plan to do. I'll let you all know what happens. |

"The simplest suggestion is to apply Chevron Techron to the gas tank, and so that is what I plan to do." I put in a bottle of Techron about every 2/3 months and a 5oz bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner every third fuel-up in all of the vehicles. Buying the Lucas product in the gallon size saves lots of $$$ |

Dr.,,, same thing happened to me. Read 1/4 but was fineto. Had to get my wife out of bed to rescue me. I now fill up at tank reading half and it takes 8 gallons. |

I ran out of gas twice in the 99 when it showed I had about 1/8 tank. You can use 1 ounce of tranny fluid per gallon of gas to clean the injectors and everything else that the fuel comes in contact with. Much cheaper than Techron with about the same exact contents. |

No,,, Padroo,,, no light. Just started running rough intermittently for about 1 min. I pulled over and shut it down,, waited a couple min. and restarted,,, ran rough still,,, so shut it down again. I had a idea that the gauge might be giving a false reading and really empty from reading the POA. When my wife brought me fuel it started a bit rough then smoothened out quickly and ran fine. I never like to go below 1/4 tank because it is not good for the fuel pump,,, the fuel keeps it cool. Now I fill up at half tank and all is well,,, so far anyway. What size tank does the Prowler have?? I think 12 but not sure. I also checked with the scanner for codes but did not leave any. |

In the first section of the service manual(Lubrication and Maint), the Fluid Capacity for Fuel shows 12 gals. However in the Fuel Delivery section, page 14-2 shows Fuel Tank Capacity at 11.6 gals with a note 'Nominal refill capacities are shown. A variation may be observed from vehicle to vehicle due to manufacturing tolerance and refill procedure.' So figure on 10 gals as usable. If you are getting 20 miles per gallon, then you would be stopping for fuel at about every 200 miles. On my trip to Indiana I started at 19 mpg and got up to 24 mpg during the trip. |

My dealer advised me to not run it close to empty, he ran out just at empty driving to his dealership, absolutely no reserve. Hence, I fill at a quarter tank but can only fit in 6 gal. That last quarter tank (at least on mine, and has been consistently) is actually half a tank, that's how she rolls, I start looking at 1/4. |

Last year after leaving the Denver event driving north on I 25, I have the low fuel light come on and we had to go 36 miles before we find a gas station. A very nerve-racking experience. Now I don't let the gauge get below a quarter of a tank. This message has been edited by jwallis on 08-30-2016 at 09:07 AM |

Twice I have gone 290 miles in the silver,,,not because I wanted to, just out in the middle of nowhere. I was sweating bullets pulling up to the pump both times. The cat took 12.2 gals (24 mpg) to fill, and my heart beat came down fast.... The orange cat runs out of fuel around 190 miles, but only takes 9 gals to fill......techs can't figure this one out? Why aren't the remaining 3 gallons not being picked up? I don't advise going past 225 miles from a full tank,,,,you don't want to be 'that guy' (or gal) when not sure of your car's range.... quote: Understand you sweating bullets if you went 290 miles on one tank in the Prowler. I start looking when I get over 150 and hope to have fuel by 175. Since I'm pulling my trailer whenever going any distance my mileage is normally around 20 mpg and don't like to get below 1/4 tank in any of my cars except my Dart and when it drops to empty it still has 1/2 a tank, no more than I drive it just refill and go. But if I drive any distance check mileage to keep track of fuel in tank. But with it 10 mpg is what I have to go by.......LOL |

When in tank fuel pumps became popular opinion was the fuel cooled the pump and it was a good idea to keep at least a half tank to prolong pump life. |

Ok ..... the problem with my gas gauge (described in my original message) is solved. I added some Chevron Techron to the gas tank and bingo, the gas gauge now works properly. |

Techron, Lucas Fuel injector fluid and tranny fluid given as good options to keep everything clean and flowing properly, but what about Seafoam? I've used it in the Prowler a couple of times, not because I was experiencing issues, just more of a preventative measure. Any thoughts on Seafoam or should I switch to one of the other products? |

Brian,, SEAFOAM is good as well to keep the engine running smooth...not sure if/how it will solve fuel tank issues. I remember many years back when calling on the SW ADESA wholesale auction yard in Chandler,,,all the Mercedes coming off lease in the eastern states were sent to ADESA for wholesaling........all of these cars were given two cans of SEAFOAM to get them running smooth again before going across the block for sale. They all seemed to be running like crap when they came from the eastern states... Keep doing what is working for you. |
