In the early years of McDonalds restaurants one franchise owner named Lou Groen had a serious problem. His restaurant was located on the West side of Cincinnati which was (and probably still is) 87% Catholic. Back then, McDonalds only sold hamburgers. Sales were good and his business was doing fine every day that he was open EXCEPT during Lent and on Fridays when most of his customers abstained from eating meat and therefore did not come to his restaurant. Mr Groen had a franchise agreement with McDonalds and could only sell their products which did not include fish. He called McD's founder, Ray Kroc and asked for permission to try selling a fish sandwich.....Kroc did not think a fish sandwich would sell well but agreed to let Mr Groen give it a try. On Good Friday in 1962 Groen offered the very first Filet-O-Fish sandwich.....It was a HUGE success (selling 375 sandwiches on the first day) and has since has become a very popular item on McDonald's menu worldwide.

Lou lived right behind Dick Linnemann. He died about 2 years ago. He bought the "Stop Sticks" company for a million or possibly 10 million, I don't recall the exact amount but it was a lot. Dick then showed him how to improve it greatly and Lou was bent out of shape since he paid a fortune for the company. Jack Cody in N.E. Ohio owned some McDonald's back in the day and met Lou Groene. Lou was worth a boatload of money. He owned over 30 McDonald's at one point. Dick's other neighbor was the guy who came up with the Slush Puppy Co. He saw the machine at a Expo in Chicago and decided it was a money maker. It went worldwide in short order and he was worth a bundle, also. He also died about 2 or 3 years ago.
