I had been using Sandy's old laptop and it had Windows 7. Two weeks ago I got an automatic update and all of a sudden I could no longer get online thru her HOTSPOT on Verizon. We went to the Verizon Store and they informed me that Windows 7 could no longer handle the Hotspot. They could not put my computer online on their phones, or other means.
They could put all of their computers online on Sandy's Hotspot so I knew it was the computer. They told me that you can't UNDO an update.
So I bought a new laptop and it was so slow I couldn't believe it. She has the unlimited usage plan. Turns out it wasn't fast enough to handle the new laptop with Windows 10 and we had to upgrade the service. They said the signal was too weak out here in the middle of nowhere, even though it worked fine with Windows 7. Sounds like a crock to me.
Did anyone else get shut down with the automatic upgrade? I saw a blurb on the news that they were going to upgrade and anything older than Windows 10 was going to be really slow but they didn't mention it was going to become a paper weight.
Ironically, the FREE update for Windows 10 expired at the end of the year. Probably just a total coincidence, don't you think!

Ed, you should just be able to delete the hotspot profile on the Windows 7 laptop and set it back up again as new. Lots of people having problems with the profile becoming corrupt with the update.

Windows 10 takes a lot of resources to run. That is why most police car laptops are still Windows 7.

I will give that a try, thank you. I forgot to add that I went to McDonald's with the new computer and it loaded immediately and ran really quickly and that is when I knew the Hotspot wasn't working, either.
There is going to be a techie here this week-end for a big party so I will ask him for some help. It is worth a try.

I am on the old Windows 7 computer now. It is quite a bit slower but it is working. thanks for the tip, Tom. I don't know if it is totally solved, but it wouldn't even connect before the Hotspot got updated.

Still have Windows 7 on lap top I use and got another one that I was going to get cleaned up that is also on Windows 7

Now it might not be worth even fooling with it if I have to update to 10. So far don't think either has updated automatically

Ed,

My laptop came with Windows 8 but I didn't really care for it as I was comfortable with XP.

For that matter, I was OK with Windows 98 and 95 before it too. A friend suggested upgrading to 8.1 because it works better.

I have been running 8.1 with Firefox for a while now and it is tolerable. My internet service is the most basic that was available when I signed up for it and is no longer offered by my provider to new customers. It serves my needs and I have no desire to pay more and Maybe get a little faster speed.

I have no desire to upgrade (AKA Downgrade) to Windows 10 at least until I am forced into it, and then at that point I may opt out completely.

For some reason I have a problem with my computer telling me what I can do and when, or keeping me waiting to use it when it decides to install updates before allowing me to use it.

If this is the direction the software companies are headed, I may simply decide to eliminate the internet from my personal use. I really don't care for it when something I have purchased dictates to me, but that is just my opinion.

We do our taxes using Turbo Tax and have been for as long as I can remember. Two years ago Turbo Tax informed us it would no longer work on our old home computer (which is very very old). So we went out and purchased a MAC so we could do our taxes. We thought this would be good for many years to come. Wrong! This year Turbo Tax informed us that again the software on this MAC was too down level. Upon investigation and we found that our MAC hardware would not support the software upgrade required to run Turbo Tax. It was cheaper to buy a new MAC than to "try" to upgrade both the hardware and the software on the two year old one. It's all a big collusion scam to keep you shelling out more money more money. Planned obsolescence.

Larry, I tried using the old laptop last night and it worked for a few minutes and then I was off line. It took a long time for my post to upload so I don't think I will be using it.
I will attempt to get online very late to see if I can upload Windows 10, although I am not crazy about it. I had another laptop get ruined by the automatic updates.

Windows 10 just did an update on my laptop. It took almost an hour before I was able to get back on.

This week I purchased a new DELLcomputer with windows 10. The old windows 7 was just too slow plus it wouldn't accept some new programs I wanted. Just time for me to upgrade.

One of the best things about updating your operating system and all the automatic updates you are forced to accept is that in many cases, your old printers and other items won't work because the "New Improved" crap isn't backwards compatible.

Not only do you get to spend money on a new operating system, you get to replace all the stuff that it won't operate.

Switched to iMac 8 years ago and love it. Plus all my data is available on all my mobile devices via cloud. Just switched over the business computers and run IOS and Windows 7 on the same iMac.

Been having issues with my laptop. Was on Windows 7 but my brand new desktop computer has Windows 10. Still learning to navigate it. There was a computer that still had 7, but Bob said he read that 7 is only going to be supported for two more years. So, I went with the 10. The thing I was really mad about was when I had to update to 11.2 on my iPhone. Now, I have a list of apps that are not supported by 11.2

Sometimes it's good to say goodbye to those old printers.

not counting the programs that also don't work. More of a phone issue that computers but not completely.

Jerry, My computer simply uploaded it, I didn't request it. They didn't ask me. It just started uploading and said don't turn off your computer. I don't know if turning it off mid-stream would have helped or created more of a problem (which in this instance would have been impossible to make it worse) but it had had many previous updates.

I heard Windows 10 doesn't give you the option to turn updates off.

I don't know how to eliminate them, they said they are automatic and certainly seem to be. I have a lot to learn with Windows 10, which is very trying, at times.

I told my H/P computer I was on metered service and
it informs me of downloads and updates then I have to approve the deal. It is a minor inconvenience but I
have the final decision. We use windows 8.1.
