Posting a pic of the Buggy, part of the collection here at the house!

69 VW Meyers Manx Long Body
Not sure if it is a copy, have not had it verified as an authentic Manx, but it looks close if it is a copy.

Very cool, have wanted a Meyers Maxx since I was a kid.

Don't understand texas not letting you plate it. I'm sure there are thousands of home built cars on the roads there, this is just one of the 1st kit cars

Have fun and thanks for sharing!

Holy tar even California is not that nuts. As long as we pay taxes on it and its old enough not to smog you could drive something out of Mad Max down the street.

Back in the 80's I built my first dune buggy.....I started by buying a 74 Volkswagen Super Beetle for it's chassis and then stripped off and scrapped the original body.

I mounted the fiberglass body of the dune buggy on it and never changed ANYTHING on the title.....It continued to be titled in Ohio as a 1974 Volkswagen even though it was now a dune buggy.

Think about it.....If you buy a car and then modified it by cutting the top off of it would it have to be re-titled as a different car?.....No.

I drove mine for several years and absolutely LOVED it...VW's are great cars and so easy to work on.....For instance, did you know that each of it's 4 cylinders is a SEPERATE JUG sealed to the crankcase with a simple rubber "O" ring?

I'd probably still have it today but my youngest daughter's high school French class organized a trip to France during her senior year....I sold it so we could afford to let her make the trip....

A number of years later I also built a 1954 MG TD Roadster "kit car" on a VW bug frame.. It was gorgeous and a ball to drive!

Apparently the cops will stop you in TX if you are driving a Dune buggy or something similar on the road. Off road you don't need a plate. The problem then is the fact they probably can't have auto insurance on them. I guess your home owners would cover it as a piece of "property", as far as theft. That might be a sticky situation, also.

Not trying to get off topic but replying to this could do just that. If so, I apologize in advance.

Years ago when I had lots of under roof storage space, I rented out space to folks for storage. When I bought the house I paid for additional insurance coverage to cover the "Contents of the buildings" just in case. I had told the insurance agent that un-tagged vehicles would be stored in the buildings from time to time which is why I wanted the additional coverage.

A few years later I let a friend store a couple dirt bikes. That particular building was broken into and the bikes went missing along with other tools and related items.

On the plus side they completely ignored the 1966 Avanti with the keys in it and my 1969 Camaro was in another one of the buildings at the time.

I filed a claim with the insurance company. They were happy to replace everything EXCEPT the motorized vehicles.

This is where it got stupid. I inquired a scenario asking "What if my riding mower had been stolen" The answer was "Because it would have been used to maintain the property, it would have been covered".

I then asked this. "If I had told you I used the dirt bikes to ride along the property edge to check the fences (on 1 acre of land mind you) for damage, would they have been covered?" The answer was an astounding YES.

Even though I thought that I had the correct coverage, it appears I did not. The moral to the story is don't make assumptions.

Just went through getting new homeowners insurance and ended up with a policy that covers everything EXCEPT what is specifically listed as excluded in the policy. There is language about water damage limitations, flooding, and other things. I like this type policy better than ones that cover only what is listed in the policy.

Back on subject.....I know a couple of people with dune buggies here in Texas and they are hopeful new legislation can be passed. Texas government says they will look into how other states are handling dune buggy and kit car registration. It seems to me they should have done that BEFORE they changed the way they are dealing with them.

Wonder what they would think of a buddies coffin car, small block Chevy for power

When he built his 1909 hearse (modeled after a horse drawn hearse) with a blown 1400 hp on alcohol they told him he had to have a windshield with the coffin doesn't have, once he got it built they issued a title. But not very street able. Plenty of horse power here.

Guess if I want a dune buggy Texas would be the place to look.

Knew a guy with a beautiful white Meyers Maxx, wanted it, he sold it without me knowing, then came up for sale again but too much money and didn't look as good.

Thanks guys,,, I had no idea of the issue Texas had on these when I bought it, and just stumbled across the information before I went to the tax office to register it. I chose not to try because I did not want to give them the Oklahoma title I have and then not get a Texas title in return, then I have nothing. The Oklahoma plates are now expired, but I never intended to do long trips with it, just run up and down the road here and at my sons house and at the beach in Port Aransas.
I think I will wait till they sort it all out.
