The statement that made all of the news was driven by a change in accounting standards for their annual 10K report filed with the Security and Exchange Commission. Yes, they are in deep trouble but so are many chains in malls across the country. Shopping patterns have changed and stores are attempting to adjust. A lot of retail stores and many malls will be impacted. |

We don't NEED a NEW thread every month about Sears. That is about 14 threads about the impending demise. H H Gregg is going under, Radio Shack is going under. |

Our Kmart is going out of business as we speak, we went there all the time instead of Walmart or Target. We don't shop Walmart very often, maybe 2 or three times a year. |

Many of our stores here in California were doing well until about 12 years ago when Walmart was coming to California. I told the wife you will see a lot of our mom & pop stores closing with them coming here. I was used to Walmart when I used to live in Chicago. I knew they would kill a lot of business's here. Now Aldi's Food chain is just starting to open here, again, I told the wife to watch just how many they put out of business. I believe Amazon is the top one to kill many business's. Fry's Electronics seems to be the only one thriving here as they are a full store plus a Internet store and will match any Internet price. Soon we will be doing all our shopping on the computer. Although it still seems like many Malls here are full, especially on the week ends |

One of our malls in Michigan City, Indiana has been struggling for years. There were three anchor stores, J.C. Penny went out a couple of years back, if Sears goes out that will leave Carson as the only store left. When you walk the mall most stores are closed and the lights are dim. The Applebee's closed there and the one in my little town did too. We are going through a time of change like when the malls drew all the business out of the towns. The malls had free plentiful parking and great sales, you could park your car once and buy everything you wanted at one place. Now you can shop the whole world and never leave your bed, what's next? I am interested because I work for Sears. And Kmart long before the merger. The recent filing made it sound worse than it is, because legally they had to disclose all the risks that could impact the business. Every other brick and mortar company faces the same. We are still concerned, no doubt, but Sears Holdings employs 140,000 people and still has a significant economic impact. Don't count us out yet. |

I don't remember any uproar when Montgomery Ward went belly up. Very few people have any idea who "Monkey Ward" was. Catalogs made good toilet paper in the "out house." I worked for them after I got out of the service and while in college. Grateful for that opportunity. |

Randy, I worked in the Troy headquarters from 1988 to 2006, before they closed up the building for good. I then moved to Hoffman Estates in Illinois as part of the merger with Sears. I moved back to Michigan in 2014 and now work from home. The Troy building is still standing and has been empty for over 10 years. There were some plans in 2008 to build new condos and retail on the site, but that deal fell apart with the recession. A few years ago they filmed several scenes for the "Red Dawn" movie remake there, including driving a tank through the front doors. Of course they had to later rebuild to prevent vandals from getting in. Sears is still paying for security and maintenance of the grounds to this day. |
