http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/topstories/sears-workers-reveal-why-the-company-is-bleeding-cash/ar-AAiaq4S?li=BBnbfcL Over the years Sears has laid off 137000 employees and shut down half of their stores. We shopped around for a deluxe Refrigerator every where we could find . Sears was about $200 higher but bought their because my wife says they have the best service. Three months later we had a problem. Sears sub contracts their service to the lowest bidder. They don't supply Sears service like they use to. The service man said he doesn't have anything to do with Sears,he just gets orders to fix whats wrong with anyones appliance. What a bunch of BS. |

We've always bought our appliances and other things from Sears and have never had any problems. We just replaced our refrigerator this Spring. The one we replaced was bought when we bought our current home after being moved back to MI from Cincy with Chrysler. That was 24 years ago. It didn't "die" on us, but Bob said the motor was starting to make noises he didn't like, so we replaced before it did. There was never any problems or service with it. Our dishwasher just crashed on us last week and we went to Sears today to purchase a new one. A few days ago, I read the article you just posted and was surprised. I guess we've been lucky to never having any issues with Sears. This message has been edited by CJ on 08-28-2016 at 10:04 PM |

My wife insisted on Sears appliances when we moved into our house in 1996. I had to call a service man last year for the first time on the washing machine. |

I've been hearing this for years. Not sure where I heard it. I haven't heard too much lately. Thanks for updating us. I know Ed will be very thankful, he was keeping up on this, it seemed like everyday he was asking for updates. |

This hurts. They're closing one of the stores where I purchased many of my Craftsman tools. I just purchased a Craftsman air compressor last night. I was doing great until we loaded in the car and I saw the made in China label, on the BOTTOM of the package. Guess that I'm old school. I continue to purchase from them, appliances, tools lawn equipment. |

I bought my first riding mower from them 32 years ago, just sold it a couple years ago, still running great. Looked at their riders now, most have China made motors. The reviews were terrible, mostsaying they were smoking or broke within a year. I bought a John Deere instead, so far i'm happy with it. |

You won't be disappointed with your John Deere riding mower, Gary....Many people are still using John Deere mowers that they purchased 40+ years ago.... If EVERY company in the United States manufacture with the same quality as Deere we wouldn't be importing so much crap from around the world.
All JD's have the same frame and deck but power plants and drive trains are different depending upon which "series" people buy. "Big box" stores sell "D-Class Series" models....And generally have little or no maintenance or repair services "in house".......And "good luck" trying to find someone who can help you diagnose any problems or answer technical questions. John Deere Dealership stores sell "X-Class Series" models......These stores are actually franchised directly by John Deere and have factory trained technicians on staff plus "overnight" availability of OEM parts if they do not already have them "in stock" (frequently, they do). John Deere dealers can also sell "S-Class Series" which are designed to compete "price-wise" with the big box stores...

garysss, One thing to keep in mind with your smaller engines is both the 10% ethanol in the gasoline and the API rating on current oils. Both are tough on small engines. The latest API oil formula doesn't protect small engines with flat tappet cams well. Briggs and Stratton has taken to offering their own oil blended to API specification "SJ" to help protect their engines. I've taken to using ethanol free fuel and the older formula oils and my repairs have dropped to virtually nothing plus the engines start easier. Just a thought. |

bjprowler, THANK you the information. I learn something new everyday and I appreciate the explanation regarding the different grade of tractors that John Deere offer. I've wondered but never researched it. |

Thanks Bob & Bj. I did buy the D series, but I bought it used from a friend of a friend for a great price. It was only a year old. I've had it 3 years now with no problems. I used both mowers the first year, just to make sure I liked it before selling Sears mower. It does have the Briggs & Stratton engine and I did buy their oil & filter kit. |

Gary, If your B&S engine has an oil filter you might want to consider switching to the 51056 Wix filter from the standard 57035 Wix filter. Check what you engine uses first. The 51056 has synthetic media and filters down to 21 microns from the standard's 32 microns. With all of the dust that the mower sees I felt it couldn't hurt. The oil looks clean through the recommended 25 hour change cycle. |
