Thom Dammrich the president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association released a statement in which he stated, “Simply put, these tariffs are a disaster for our industry. All types of recreational boats are on the retaliatory lists from both Canada and the EU. As a result, rather than protecting American manufacturing, these tariffs directly harm the entire recreational boating industry—one of our country’s enduring American-made industries. To make matters worse, Canada, Mexico, and the EU are the top three export markets for American-made marine products and in 2017 they accounted for nearly 70 percent of marine exports." Aluminum boat sales have outpaced fiberglass boat sales in recent years. Yet most of these companies source their aluminum from American producers, which puts them at a greater disadvantage on an already competitive export market. The U.S. marine industry and the recreational market in general is a champion of U.S. manufacturing, creating some of the highest paying labor jobs in the U.S. market. The NMMA reports there are 650,000 jobs in the recreational marine market in boat manufacturing alone. There are even more jobs in all of the marine products and service sectors that support the recreational marine industry which would result in some far- reaching ripples if there was an industry slowdown from the ongoing trade war. Dammrich continued in his statement, saying, “In 2017, total recreational marine expenditures reached a ten year high of $39 billion. This growth was expected to continue into 2018 and beyond, but the Administration’s actions today jeopardize the stability of the industry and ultimately harm every American consumer, worker, and business.” |

Here you go LD: As Republican politicians like to say when talking about climate change say: "I'm not a scientist but..." Well I am not an economist. I just took the one year that was required. But using your favorite search engine can give you some answers: “When economists hear, ‘Our goal is reduce the trade deficit,’ it baffles us,” Gordon Hanson, a trade economist at the University of California, San Diego, said. “He’s either using it as a cheap political ploy or there’s a misconception — he doesn’t understand how it operates.” Now, White House officials are mulling a change to the calculation of the trade deficit that would make it grow, at least on paper, the Wall Street Journal reported. Under the change, “re-exports” — or goods that come into the United States and are immediately shipped out again — wouldn’t be counted as exports but would still be tallied on the import side of the ledger. Taken together, the move would swell the deficit. Economists roundly derided the method as fuzzy math. It would “grossly and, I would say, unfairly inflate the deficit,” Gene Grossman, a trade economist at Princeton University, said. The effort to try to create a bigger-looking trade deficit highlights the Trump administration’s laser focus on that number as a bellwether of economic strength, despite the protestations of mainstream economists. (Countries can run trade deficits or surpluses in good times or bad; they are a function of savings and investment rates more than of trade policy.) Speaking of savings: Over the years, many explanations of the persistent U.S. trade deficit have been proposed. Let me give you a brief review of some of the points that have been raised. By the national income identity discussed above, a trade deficit is caused by a change in national saving or investment or both. U.S. national saving began declining in the 1950s, and this decline further accelerated in the 1980s. Both federal government and personal saving declined during the period (CBO 2000, p. 9). The growing U.S. budget deficit has been blamed for the widening trade deficit because of the so-called "twin deficit" hypothesis (which states that budget deficits cause trade deficits). However, as then–Fed Governor Ben Bernanke discussed in a 2005 speech, to understand the U.S. current account deficit, one must look beyond the U.S. borders.5 He suggested that "over the past decade a combination of diverse forces has created a significant increase in the global supply of saving—a global saving glut—which helps to explain both the increase in the U.S. current account deficit and the relatively low level of long-term real interest rates in the world today" (Bernanke 2005). The increase in labor productivity that the U.S. has experienced since roughly 1996 might also be part of the explanation behind the widening of the U.S. trade balance. An increase in productivity can both increase the investment rate and lower the saving rate. This, in turn, would lead to a wider current account deficit (for more on the link between productivity and the current account, see Valderrama 2007).

I asked for YOUR opinion,,,NOT someone elses. When you search Google you can find anything you want to suit your opinion. Opinions are like azzholez,,, everyone has one. Facts on the other hand is a different story. So as we know it as of NOW, meaning today,, Trump is OUR president aaaaand,,, Trump's policies are working no matter what a Google search reveals about opinions. The past few presidents have done dik wod on trade and manufacturing jobs have gone over sea's. Trumps policies have been bringing them back. My dad had a manufacturing company that he closed due to overseas manufacturing. Luckily he was at retirement age when he closed down so it did not affect him,,, we'll I guess not totally because he was not able to sell it because it was worthless. I have seen factorys close in my area and now you see new ones popping up again. The tax cut is going to help me substantially. I am a LLC so previously the profit gets passed to the me via personal tax rate. Now under the new tax law it gets taxed at 20% not the personal rate which is higher. Ohh that last President said I could keep my doctor and my insurance plan,,, guess what,,, my doctor I had for 15 years was not in our new plan we were pushed into so I could not keep him and my plan I had did not meet the ACA rules so now we have a different plan with a $5000 deductible that we pay first before we can actually use the insurance. These are real life facts I have witnessed not some search that I scoured Google for. So as of now I have trust in the Donald he is doing the right thing for OUR COUNTRY. Ohhhhh by the way Reech,,, for the state of California that want's to leave the US and become a separate contry or whatever they want,,,, Brown is BEGGING congress for funds to fight the wildfires,,, we should help because they are part of the US. But let me tell you,,, If California does leave the US,,, we should not give them one more dime. On this one,,, I do have a azzhole. Lastly,,, I spent waaay to much of my life writing this,,, next time I will stick to the memes. This message has been edited by Landscape Doctor on 08-05-2018 at 09:00 PM |

BS from landscape guy. He doesn't know how to Google, so he listened to Don-the-Con Trump and State News Channel, Faux News, instead. His most glaring FAKE NEWS claim is that his new Tax Rate will be 20% under Trumps tax plan. LD says.... "The tax cut is going to help me substantially. I am a LLC so previously the profit gets passed to the me via personal tax rate. Now under the new tax law it gets taxed at 20% not the personal rate which is higher." FAKE NEWS..... LIES...... FAKE NEWS..... LIES..... FAKE NEWS..... LIES You get a 20% DEDUCTION ONLY, of your business income AND it's TAXED AT YOUR PERSONAL RATE. NOT 20% TAX RATE as you falsely claim. If you had Googled it, you would have found this..... "Unlike large corporations that are taxed at a flat rate, most small businesses are “pass-through” entities, meaning that the profits from the business flow through to the business owner’s personal tax return and then are taxed at ordinary income tax rates." "While pass-through income will continue to be taxed at ordinary income tax rates, many small business owners will be eligible to deduct 20% of their “qualified business income” (QBI) starting in 2018. In other words, some pass-through entities will only be taxes on 80% of their pass-through income." http://www.greenbushfinancial.com/pass-income-will-taxes-2018-small-business-owners/ ................................................................................................................. Yes, and LD's FAKE opinions STINK. Yes, please go back to your maniac meme's and not post FAKE NEWS (Lies). Yes, and other FAUX items you posted also STINK. Yes, please try Googling….. you might learn something (TRUTH)

LD, you asked for my opinion. This is a subject I've never really given a lot of thought to trade deficits are not really high on my priority. The problem today is too many people are spouting off opinions without any research or thought going into it. You asked me for my opinion I had to do a bit of research wow what a concept research before spouting off. Ed, Cal is a huge educational system respected worldwide. One Professor may have made a bad calculation. That is very bad logic. This message has been edited by reechee on 08-08-2018 at 05:52 PM |
