Mike called me collect, as he was walking home after his ball joint broke while driving down the road about 45 mph.He told me the car had the recall done. This upsets me to think the recall is a joke.I WANT ANSWERS...(AND WILL NOT SLEEP TILL I GET THEM) ------------------ |

Mike said he would report as soon as he knows something. He seem's to be bummed out at the moment. And is very confused as to how this could happen. We were both speeding yesterday as we reached speed of 120mph (only because someone tried to pass) (didn't happen). He's still walking back, when he get's to the office he will post.I will post later.Right now Jerry Springer show is on. ------------------ This message has been edited by meancat on 08-09-2005 at 10:29 PM |

I'd be there to verify that the ball joint recall was actually done by inspecting the ball joint number before they get a chance to change in case the dealer was playing games. |

Does any one know what material the ball joint is made of? I do Know the A arms are aluminum and aluminum has a very high thermal expansion with temperature change compared to steel and copper, not trying to stere the pot, but depending on the material content of the ball joint, this may have some thing to do with the failure with Mikes ball joint. I remember seeing a picture of the ball joint some where on this sight and I believe there was a copper sleeve or bushing hopefully beryllium copper. If I recall the ball joint, was press fitted into the nickel at room temperature, depending on all the material components of the ball joint assembly and all the inner and outer diameters of the components being tolerance correctly, maybe they should have froze the ball joint assembly in liquid nitrogen prior to install. what the liquid nitrogen does is shrink the beryllium copper and allow it to normalize at room temperature if you will to conform with the inner race of the aluminum A arm after install, just a thought here. It would be nice to know where this ball joint failed this time since the recall was completed. This message has been edited by Jim C on 08-10-2005 at 08:23 AM |

Jim, the exterior body of the ball joint appears to have passivation finish on the steel body. The hardened inner ball and stud ride in a plastic bearing and thrust against a hardened top cap that is held in place with a folded lip on the ball joint body. This was a brand new old style lower ball joint that was pressed out of an unused a-arm. There didn't appear to be much grease inside when disassembled. |

PS Jim, the ball joints usually fail under that plastic jobber between the ball and the stem. The later recall pieces have a larger diameter stem in this area. I think Dan has pics on his site comparing the two. |

not that it matters to Mike anymore, but I found a piece that goes under the ball joint cap to take top load. Rolled off the bench when I tapped out the stem--OOOPS

Butchcee, Thanks for showing the inner components of the Ball joint assembly, and clarifying what failed, "Plastic scarry". I did notice that the lower end cap has the "X" number on it that some one here had mentioned was the indication that the ball joint recall was completed, are these pictures of a new one or the replacement? Again thank you for showing us the pictures.. |

Jim--the pics are an old/unused one. Here's a shot of another old/unused next to a new replacement. The x is visible on this shot. |
