Hello all. I am thinking of trading out of my '69 convertible muscle car and into a Prowler. I have lusted after the Prowler since it was released. I was hoping I could tap a few of you for a bit of advice.

I have seen many pics of the different year Prowlers and I THINK I noticed a slight body style change. This may just have been the pics though. So, here are my 2 questions.

1. What were the body changes, if any, over the years?
2. What year was the best (Performance and reliability) for the engine?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated as I want my purchase to be the right one. Thanks.

The engine is only different between the 97 aand all other years. There is no body change at all. Only a different suspension change starting in the year 00 and above. My advice is get the color you want. The difference in suspension is slight. Also the 00 and above have a trip meter and temp gauge in the rearview mirror and a automatic sound adjustment in the radio that changes with your speed. You wont go wrong with any prowler you choose. It is a fun car. I live in Southern California where nice cars are all over the place but still none commands the attention a prowler brings. Look for a lower mileage one and spend the extra money for it and get an extended warranty if possible.

I think 2000 & up would
be the best choice.

I really like purple so thats what I got. I didnt have much choice in the year because they only made them in 97 and 99. In my opinion, the year doesnt matter, get the color you want. I think the true prowler enthusiasts would tell you it doesnt matter the year, its still a prowler and youll have lots and lots of fun for the life of the car.

Thanks for the replies. I too like the purple the best. I have family connections to a Dodge dealer near where I live. The owner loves old muscle cars like mine, and they occassionally take a Prowler in on trade. So.....that may be a good bet for me. My '69 is worth roughly $10 to $15 thousand less than a Prowler now, so I'll need all the help I can get.

Thanks again.

fortsmith,
Good luck on your cat purchase. We all love our cats for various reasons. Myself...I too love the Purple in addition to it being a first year cat.

Here is an older thread talking about this same subject.

Well, in the "Facts" section I saw a few improvements after 1999. Most noticable among them is the ride quality. It says that it got smoother. That is a shame because I like the Purple color, which wasn't made after the ride quality improved.

So, my next question is, how much softer is the ride anyway? If the ride is just barely softer after 1999, and not that noticable, then I'd feel much better about the 1999 Purple. However, if there is a marked difference in the ride quality, then I may have to rethink my color pref.

99 and later all had the 253 HP motor. Only the 97 had the 214 HP. I have seen posts of 97 Prowlers turning as good of 1/4 miles time as the later models. We would not trade our Purple 99 for any other color. However there are many other colors I would really like to have in addition.

You can always buy a Purple and get the Larry Lord Wonder Bar to improve the ride. For us the ride of the 99 has never been that big an issue.

Go with color first ... ride is not that much better, and you will also sacrifice a very slight ride height increase in 00 and above to get that slightly softer ride. Also, earlier 99's have a slight advantage in exhaust flow through some components, so I am " told" by reliable source. this would be Purple and Yellow's and maybe some Blacks ... color is key -- buy what you would like to see in your driveway every day!

OK, color it is then. Just a couple questions there. I have seen some pics of the purple that don't look quite as good as others. Did the shade of purple change at anytime? Also, I have seen the "Orange " listed many ways. Pearl, metallic, Burnt, etc. Are there really different oranges??? Thanks!!!

fortsmith,
The color of Prowler Purple is loaded with metaflake. The Purple also has a little Red in it unlike the Plum Crazy that has a little Blue in it with no metaflake. The Purple will vary under different lights. You get in the bright sunlight and it looks totally different. The Purple never changed shades in 97 or 99.

I seriously doubt that any of the Prowler colors were reformulated through out its whole 5 years.

Remember also...if you buy a 97 Purple...it will come with the painted silver rims. That's why I'm running 99 chromes on my 97. I like the look of the chromes!
As Ray mentioned...pick a color...any color. Just pick the one you want and the smiles will follow!!!

Orange is "Sparkle Orange" or as most are listed on the window decal "Prowler Yellow, Orange, Silver", etc ... No changes to the shades from year to year or Plymouth to Chrysler.

Chrome wheels became a so-called option in mid-99, well after July '98 production ... from then earlier through '97, as had been stated, the rims were silver painted and clear coated like the a-arms on mid-99's and earlier.

On their own merit, they are all great, some of us are just partial to one color over another ... you may be too ... find it, buy it then enjoy it!

Yes, I have narrowed my selection a bit. I like the Black Tie edition and I like the Purple. I also had some encouraging news about the owner of the Dodge dealer near me. One of his top salesmen told me that he was quite sure the owner would find me a Prowler and trade me even for my 442 convertible. So, IF....IF that is the case, that will be a nice suprise. About the Purple, I think a 99 would be nice due to the chrome wheels and the higher HP.

The advice you folks have given me has been great and I want to say Thank You.

Not all 99's Purples came with Chrome Wheels. In fact more 99 Purples started life with the silver painted wheels rather than chrome. My Purple has a build date of August 98 and it started life with painted silver wheels. We have since switched to chrome and like the look much better. Many people have told me my purple color looks much better in person than in photos I have posted. Probably camera operator error.

I say it doesn't even matter what color you pick...just find the cleanest well kept car at the best price.

I originally wanted the Candy Red more than any other color, but there was the Black Tie just sitting in the showroom priced to move. Whatever color you buy will THEN become your favorite.

Forthsmith,

Perhaps one addition if you worry about the ride quality.
It is always possible to install Larry Lord's Wonderbar.
That will improve ride quality substantially and you might
think of tossing the original OEM tires out and swap them
for non run flat''s. (I installed the wonder bar but kept
the non run flat's though, didn't want to take the risk
of running a flat wihtout having a spare tire).
You might want to install the Koni shocks.

Try to search on Wonderbar and you will find some more info
in the tech section or just try this:
http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/011003.html

Personally I think the 2002 models are the best
simply because the Inca Gold was released then

On the paint, I received an airpatrol from Bob (Goetz) which
didn't exactly match my Inca Gold, both colour and the flakes
in the metallic. I had it repainted at an A+ body shop and
and they did a superb job. The colour coding of the orange was
called Burnt Orange in their specs.

Best regards,

Kees

Well, I test drove a Prowler for the first time today. It was quite different than I thought. I am not a monster, but I am a broad shouldered 200 lbs. at 5'9". Usually I like a bit of elbow room to be comfortable. I felt very cramped sitting in the driver's seat. Does this bother anyone else, or do you get used to it? The doors came up higher than I thought.

Also, there were two Prowlers there. Both had chrome wheels that were pitting from the inside. Is this common in all the chrome wheels?

Oh, and I have confirmed that the Dodge dealer will trade me even for my '69 convertible. So, my indicision couldn't have come at a worse time...... One good thing though is that I SERIOUSLY...that's SERIOUSLY doubt that I could ever sell my '69 in the $30k range. But, if I went ahead with this deal and found that I just couldn't handle the cramped cockpit, I COULD sell the Prowler in that $30k range.

MAN, I never would have thought this would have been a tough decision.

5{ there are much bigger people then you on the site. The thing with the Prowler is that you sit low like a Rod so you feel a little cramped, then you get used to it and you never want to go back.

I will say year wise get the newest lowest mile one you can afford. The 99's do ride rougher, that is a given but daily drivable if you have been driving a older muscle car.

Depending on what you are used to driving, the Prowler can be a totally different feel.

I enjoy the different feel and ride. I'm 6'4" and 245 lbs. and have a Tahoe as a daily driver. Plenty of cockpit room.
Yes the Prowler is a tight fit for me, but is a totally different ride from the Tahoe, which I love.
