arvin meritor came thru on the hood struts.there is a different division so to speak for the many parts they make.the hood strut division must be one of the better ones, all i got on the window reg was a runaround.im not done with that yet.back to the struts, they sent me 4 pairs different pressures-73lbs are stock.they sent 80lbs-88lbs-93lbs and 105lbs.alley cat and i will install on our cars and test them to see if they last any longer than the stock ones.keep your fingers crossed.many thanks to gary weber at arvin meritor.they look just like the stock ones, but have more pressure.

JAN /AC

Let me know how they work, I just started looking for replacements as mine have given my prowler that droopy nose effect with a slam if I don't watch.

I noticed my second pair in five + years (including the originals) are starting to fade. How much. I have to purchase some anyway so I might as well try these. The cold weather always gives you an early warning.

David Head Hunter - email Jan,,,we need one more local test pilot.

Must drive cat some miles and open and close the hood many times during the test. Jan isn't looking for garage queens and ones that never get the hood opened.
Not trying to be harsh here,,,,just pointing out that test cars need to be driven and the hoods opened and shut to collect the needed data for Arvin- Meritor.

I really think that if you found shocks that work, they should be FREE from Chrysler. This is a serious issue with a production car and should have been fixed long ago. A hood slamming down on someone's head it could be lethal and at a minimum very very painfull.

There should have been a recall long ago.

Who has been hit in the head with the hood yet?

these are prototypes, not for sale.we are testing them to see if they last longer.almost hit in the head once.ruined the hood portion of the frt.end bra.had taken off and laid on the rad.support, turned around and hood slammed shut, putting a hole in the bra.

I'm on my fourth set of hood shocks. I've had the hood slam on my head. left wrist, right hand fingers resulting in headache, cut on left wrist and no handwriting or gripping for a couple of days.

Maybe I shouldn't open the hood so much! :

Well, Marty, if you quit changing the engine, you wouldn't have to have the hood open so much.......this is the fourth engine too, isn't it??

CJ - what is an engine? I've got a new crank, pistons, & cams. Second set of new heads on it now. My original block was still used to stroke it to 4.0 liters.

If you average it all out maybe I am on engine number 2.25! :

Getting back to the hood struts. Orange - Finding ones that last would be god thing. I doubt seriously if you will be able to get any kind of recall or replacements from DC. It might be a good exercise for you since you are due to graduate from Law School soon,

Good luck and keep us posted.

I don't know why it would be so hard to have them recalled. The liftgate on my van was recalled because it could fall on people's heads when open. Why is the hood so different. If people notified NHTSA about their injured wrists, fingers, and heads, there might have been a recall already.

Marty,

Finished law school about 2 weeks ago, already started with the bar classes.

I think I will find out how to start a recall. It might be an interesting and educational experience.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Fred - the first time I saw the hood come off it kind of caught my breath. Now I've had every body off at least once and the hood has been off at least a dozen times, it's still no big deal.

What do you considered new engine?? The first time I damaged the engine the lower block was still stock and I got new pistons, heads and cams. The next time, the engine got stroked and got a new crank. This last time I got new pistons and new heads again (same cams). So really, how many engines have I had???

Speaking as someone who has very little experience about engine swapping and engine rebuilding, I would say as long as you have your original block (or at least the part that has the VIN number stamped on it) you still have your "original" engine.

Marty.........well, we sure know it's not stock anymore!

Fred........the velcro.........now there's an innovation!

Orange........are you saying that hood shocks should never wear out and would need to be replaced? Are you saying that other vehicles that have hood shocks would not have this happen also?
