Well its finally happened, a few weeks back I secured a candy red with around 2700 miles from a member here. As you can see I'm located in Australia but have been following this forum (and Ebay)religiously for quite a while. I was originally looking for a 2000 black but always had a soft spot for the candy red. I am currently arranging its storage in CA through a friend of mine there.
I was hoping to store it there until March 2005 when I will return with my wife on a 5 week vacation for our 20th wedding anniversary. 1 week in NY then back to CA for 4 weeks of travel.
I was hoping to use the Prowler to travel in but as I'm finding out that I will be up for around $3,000 in state taxes and registration costs, that may not be an option anymore. Its a shame as I was hoping to get to Oklahoma with it to pick up a black trailer I bought a while back that is being stored by another member from here.
I had plans of getting a hardtop and rear spoiler fitted next Feb by Norb but due to the unfortunate circumstances that is on hold. Like others I am also keen to get these in candy or any other colour if anyone has them for sale.
So unless there is another option I may as well send it back here earlier and have the conversion done to right hand drive. I will also be changing the exhaust, maybe rear pan and front bumper removal kit.
I may be searching for a Canadian instrument cluster for the kilometre odometer and speedo, and was wondering if anyone knows of one being parted out?
Anyway thats it for now and might be seeking future advice and help......by the way I'd say there would be less than 10 of these in Australia and I'd say mine is the only one in this colour.......Peter

Peter,

Congratulations........ indeed a superb colour.
I travel 3 times a year to Australia (mainly Sydney) but
have never seen one. It must be just as an exclusive
drive as mine in The Netherlands (only 2 or 3).

Have fun.

Best regards,

Kees

Peter - WELCOME to the POA and congrats on the purchase of your new ride!

Wouldn't it be easier if your country just change over to lefthand drive vehicles?

OK Peter I may have an answer for you!
If you can find a state side Retail Car dealer to handle your purchase in a state that does not need to collect tax on out of state sales they can issue a 31 day temporary license tag. Here in Minnesota I know it works that way and I am sure other states do to, I would offer to do it but only have access to a wholesale dealer and the temporary tag rules are different. So do we have any retail car dealers in this group that can help Peter out? Good Luck!

Thanks guy's, I was really looking forward to using it next year and looking at options for that to happen. The car is already paid for and in my friends possession. She appears on here now and then but felt guilty that she wasn't aware of the the costs etc when the car was NON-OP (I just appreciated her help along the way).I would rather spend the money on accessories (hardtop) than 4 weeks of registration and insurance. Its hard when you have such a great car but may not get the use of it for 6 months or so. I was also keen to get to a Prowler event with it between mid March and mid April....and I don't mind travelling. I have been over 4 times in the last 7 years or so and will be back every 2 years with some mates (Buddies) of mine to go to Bakersfield nostalgia drags and Pomona swap meet.
By the way thanks CJ for your advice along the way, I know by other responses the great things you do to promote the cars and assist people.....thanks....Peter

Peter, congratulations.
Most states will only issue a 30 day Temp plate when you first switch the title. I would suggest you leave it sit in storage. Try to get a temporary plate and if they claim they cannot give it to you, sell it to someone for $ 1 and then buy it back for $1, possibly in a different state. You will have to get it inspected but it is not a big deal in most states. The other option is bring a plate with you from Australia and put it on the car. If a cop stops you he probably would not ticket you and if he did it would not cost all that much (providing he is not a total jerk and tows the car) I would think it would work. Maybe you can borrow someone else's Prowler license plate so that it comes back to a Prowler on the police computer.
Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

Hey Ed, Its funny you mention the getting pulled over comment. Last March we were heading back from Bakersfield drag strip and we got pulled over for about 10 miles over the limit. The guy was going to write up the driver and took his Australian license back to the car but returned about 5 minutes later and said it was too hard to process. I don't think the 4 digit zip code and NSW (New South Wales)as a state registered.....don't you just love computers and their programmers....lol...anyway he just said "see ya's later and slow down". I have a guy in CA looking into the registration issue and want to do whats legal as insurance is my other worry. The car still has the license plate but no valid tags.
On another matter, you won't believe it but as part of the conversion here we have to fit side indicators to the mirror. I don't want to have to do it but has an aftermarket one ever been produced? I am also after a Canadian instrument cluster and thought maybe someone knows of one from a wrecked one?....thats enough questions for now....hey CJ are sick of your hardtop yet....Peter

I scream has the turn signals in the side mirrors. It was a concept they were investigating. Kind of pricey according to Jerry S. About $1750, as I recall. Ouch.
That is too funny that they could not figure out how to give you a ticket. I love it.

NOPE!! I have the best of both worlds. I leave the hardtop on the Candy and when I want a convertible, I jump in the Black cat! Gonna have to find a hardtop somewhere else! lol!

Peter,

I live in Menangle just outside Sydney, and am very excited to hear of your purchase. I didn't know we had that many over here. I know of 1 in Melbourne, but no more.

I plan to buy 1 one day, but that's some time off yet as you could probably imagine. I understand that you won't have it here for some time but when you do get it here I would love to meet up with you and have a look at it and a general chat. In the meantime, I would love to get across the trials and tribulations of the process for shipping one over.

Am happy to supply an email address or if you could supply one, we could get in touch.

Thanks, Anthony

Well if you change your mind CJ let me know....if you come over to Sydney you can try a right hand drive Prowler...lol

AJ, I know of a few that I have crossed paths with, one is coming down from Qld to its Sydney owner which has just been passed after 2 year wait.....I have attached a pic of a registered left hand drive one from Victoria which is owned by Chrysler Australia and was fortunate to have a ride in (there is also a right hand drive Viper)....I will email you with a link to pics of my car on imagestation.....Peter
