While I love my Prowler, I have to admit that sometimes it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth to take it out.

I don't care all that much about how my Dodge Durango looks: dust-covered body, dirty wheels, orange traffic cone embedded in the grill, etc. But with my Prowler, I feel like I have to polish the thing up every time I take it out.

I got a new CD today and I had trouble getting to the CD magazine with the top down, so I disengaged the top from the trunk to gain easier access to the CD changer. Let me say that again: I half put the top up to listen to a CD.

I also had to check the weather before I went out in the thing to make sure it wasn't going to rain. Today, I got about 20 feet from my house and got a low tire light, so I turned around and aired up the tires.

Does anyone else ever think that for all its style this car does seem to involve a lot of "preflight checks" and other work in order to enjoy it, or am I just a Prowler wimp?

NO WAY on the "pre-flight" checks!! I take great pride in both my cats and I make sure that after I take it out, I clean it up and put the cover on. That usually only means I use detailer on it and clean the windows. Doesn't take long. I put the cover on it so next time I want to take it out, it's ready.

With regard to the cd changer, move the passenger side seat back up one notch and you shouldn't have any trouble reaching behind the seat. I can do it with one hand and don't even have to look while I'm changing the cartridges.

I don't deliberately take my cats out in the rain, but I've been caught a number of times. Usually on Prowler events..........but it cleans up!

I guess a little pro-active maintenance would prevent the last minute annoyances.

Yes it is a lot of work, but it is worth it.
I have taken my Prowler out to 3 car cruises
in the past 3 weeks and that means that I have
detailed it 3 times. Yesterday eve. I probably
had at least a dozen women and several men tell
me how much they loved my car. I NEVER got that
with my 03 Mustang Cobra. I guess you could say
it is a labor of love.

TwliteZoneRSterling - You are normal,,,,there aren't enough hours in a day to keep too many vehicles clean and spotless. While I enjoy my Dakota driver, I find little time to keep it clean anymore.

PS - pull the orange cone out of the Durango grill,,,,might overheat

I have had collector type cars since 1969. It goes with the territory and I am accustomed to the type of things that need done with these types of cars. It is just normal for me to take special care of these cars. I just find the time to get it done.

Doc,

been there - done that !!

Our Cat was a "garage queen" for almost 2 years - I didn't want to put "too many" miles on her - just like you did, I was checking the Weather Channel Radar 20 times before leaving just to make sure that there is a 0 % chance of rain and YES the Cat had to be sparkling clean !!

But you know what, one day I read on this board how people enjoy driving their cats and how many of the members didn't worry about "how many miles" they put on 'em so we took the plunge and drove it more often - and it felt goooood. As a matter of fact, I'm so obsessed driving it now that I have to drive it at least once a week ! (Used to be once a month IF at all)

I still don't want to drive the Cat in the rain, but if it happens, as it did a couple of times lately I just clean her off the next day !

Doc, take the plunge and enjoy the ride !!

seriously.....I have had 8 Kats, I drove most of them moderately(a few thousand miles), some have hardly been driven at all(one has 125 miles).....but the Kat I enjoyed most was the orange Kat....I drove it 28K miles in 18 months.....drove it all over the eastern half of the nation, drove it thru 2 winters, ice, snow, salt, sand etc etc....it was driven in the rain all the time(it didn't leak at all).....the last year or so I owned it, it wasn't even garaged most of the time, it just sat at the curb......yes, it did look a little worn(not much), but that is the Kat that I had the most fun with and all the memories were made with......I let anyone with a drivers license "test drive" it.....loaned it to some young girls for prom nite...let a lot of kids use it for senior pictures.....let several of my employees use it to take their kids a ride....I decided it was replaceable and the fun far out weighed the minor road rash in the paint....the car did very well in the snow and held up very well considering it was used as a "regular" car....there will always be low mile Kats out there for sale, even 20-30 years from now....use up a couple along the way and have a great time doing it....

ps....the car now resides in Florida....it looks like new and the current owner is driving the wheels off of it too.....

Yeah - right ! While Dusti is right about driving the Cat more often and enjoying it a lot - he's wrong about one thing. "The Cat gets wet - I'll just clean her up !" He curses for about 30 minutes because "Precious" got wet !!! Once we get home the car has to be made spotless before he puts the cover on.
A few weeks ago we drove the Cat back from Panama City,FL and it rained all the way home. I had to listen to 6 hours of constant cursing and by the time we got home I felt like I needed therapy or just shoot Dusti !

I love my Prowler. That's why I drive it. It is a car and as much as some us want to admit it, just like any other vehicle. The difference is in your mindset. Dusti referred to this in his earlier post. I always knew my Prowler would be a daily driver so maybe it was easier for me. There is NO WAY I can wait for good weather nor spend even 30 minutes each time I come home from driving it.

I can appreciate the feelings many people bestow on their Prowlers, but when your mindset becomes a burden and you worry about excessively, my opinion is you may want to rethink your position. You should enjoy Prowler ownership and have fun cruising in it.

Everybody has the right to do what they want with their car and feel the way they do, drive it not drive it in the rain, etc. For me life has enough worries - two kids in college, work issues, rental properties we own, aging mother,......I use my car for therapy - it's cheaper and more fun than a shrink!

Cleaning AND detailing the KAT after every ride is ME, but, with tongue in cheek--and this is directed mostly toward the 'FEMALE' Prowler owners and/or drivers: Do you women actually wash, wax, dust, detail, polish your cats...or does hubby do it? C'mon, be honest!! I love my wife, the EVIL ELF, dearly! But, I cannot remember more than twice in our up-coming 11-year marriage that SHE has done that! She will, on occasion, take her car to a car wash...but for her to grab a bucket o' hot soapy water & a sponge AND a bottle or can o' wax & a rag! Ha! Don't make me laugh! It ain't happenin'! Flame-suit donned...but feedback is solicited!

i agree with marty. i bought the prowler to counteract the nonsense that life brings your way(bills, stress, kids, etc). it is a whole lot more fun than PROSAC and you cannot beat the people that you meet in the car hobby. enjoy!!

I personally wash, wax and detail the Prowler. I change the oil, do the maintenance and have even done the brakes. Ken is great with cars, but when it comes to my cars, I take care of them. Tami

Yes, I baby my Prowler and my other 6 cars. We check the weather before we go out and clean the cars after we get back, as you can see I said "we", Pat helps with the cars, cleaning and other things. We enter a lot of car shows with the PRowler, S2000, PT Cruiser and the Mercedes, so all our cars are kept in show quality condition, so we can go at a moments notice. Pat can and does maintainence on all our cars. We do have a truck that is used for bad weather, leaving us the others for the nice weather.

Don't get me wrong, if we get caught in a rain squall, that is the way it is. But I will not start out knowing the weather is going to be bad - rain, snow, high winds and would you believe too many bird sightings in the area

While I keep 'our' Kat detailed, Eleanor has helped out with the drying, etc, a few times.... that said, however, let me assure you.... if it were 'Her' car... it would be very different.

She had a 1982 Recaro TransAm... one of 1,000... and that baby was spotless, every mile, every time. She would drive in inclement weather, alright, but it couldnt be told the next day! What I remember most about that car was the trade-in value... only $2200 less than we paid,.... and that was after 85,ooo miles! It was literally spotless.

This one, she says, is mine... and with it goes the work.
Fair enough
While not a 'daily' driver, it was 'more than once a week'.
Just over 2 1/2 yrs old, getting ready for Woodward later this week, and it's sitting at just under 25,500 now

Lovin' it!

And it aint too dang bad off either for 25K.

If you consider that a Prowler wimp.....then I guess I am one as well.
I always avoid puddles, water of any sort...and it really bugs me when there's any sort of dirt on the car anywhere!
That's why it seems like I spend half my life around the garage polishing.
The only difference between you and I is that I can get just as particular with my daily driver(Avalanche)...

Yep me too!!! I join the ranks as a wimp also. When I perform my detailing on my cat it's a definite labor of love.
I feel the same way many of the Prowlers owners on this OUTSTANDING website feel. You get the most fun out of your cat when your behind the wheel. Not just sitting in the garage with it pretending to be driving it. I think I love taking my kids (one at a time of course) out in it the most. My wife and I just went out to dinner last week in it. Took a nice drive along the coast too!
So...rsterling78...as you can see...there are many of us that feel the same way you do about your Prowler. I'll say again...at least for me...it's a definite labor of love!
Have a great night everyone!

MissKitty - It's good to hear that Dusti is like most of the rest of us guys I don't like it when I have to drive in rain either,,,,,,because I can foresee the many hours of 'work' ahead of me to clean the cat up again. But, I have learned to live with that reality.

I can't help you with the therapy that you might need,,,,but we can get you a gun to shoot Dusti, lol.

I am a female owner of two cats. My husband prefers to do the major wax job in the Spring and the Fall. Not that I am not capable, he just likes doing it. The rest of the time, I dust, wash, detail, clean wheels, etc. I have even had it up on the lift several times, hand-cleaning the undercarriage after it got caught in the rain. I learned to clean cars from my Dad and have fine-tuned it over the years. They are my cars, I drive them and I am responsible for keeping them beautiful.
