for over 20 years I have had plates made at car shows(the plastic personalized ones)....have run them on the street on various cars and NEVER got a ticket.....had one I ran for 9 years(updated styles as necessary) that said "PANTHER PINK", 11 letters....this was only on cars that were seldom used.....not daily drivers....probably saved enough on plates through the years to buy another whole car..........
ran "DAYTONA" for 15 years
"PLUM CRAZY" since '88....they look like real....state cop buddy of mine once advised NOT to put on a year sticker, that would be fraud....otherwise, it is a show plate....just forgot to change it ???......never was stopped....

Larry ... GREAT idea, but .... IF a cop does stop you and runs the 'show plate' and comes up no dice, what do you say if you really don't have a plate for the car ... he just buys it that you "forgot to change it" and doesn't ask for proof of any actual plate? Very creative IF there isn't a down side!

There's always the legal way, transfer a plate from an old vehicle to the newer one.

Al...in Indiana, transfering a lesser plate to a higher end car results in paying the difference anyway....can't win there....
Ray....I was unable to plate these cars legally anyway due to the fact I never titled them in my name.....many of these cars were very expensive and I didn't title them so there was no sales tax .....I have owned many cars for many years that were never titled in my name....when I sold the car, the next person titled the car if they wished, but I was never in the loop......the plates, well I was never stopped ever in all those years with fake plates....remember, these were on cars that were mainly driven and shown in my hometown...I get along fine with the local police....I have been known for having nice/unusual cars in this town since the late sixties....many of the local cops were kids I have talked to at car shows when they were little kids......I do get by with a lot I guess....it just always amazed me the police never noticed there were 9-11 letters on a plate, and no sticker either.....if stopped, my story was "I just bought the car", and since the title was still in the previous owners name, I had so many days to plate it anyway....
....now, two times I did get stopped....state police was following me down the highway one evening, I was driving a 1970 Superbird.....the plates were the ORIGINAL 1970 Indiana plates...the car had only a few thousand miles on it....the cop hits the lights, I pull over....he comes stomping up to my car and says "did you know your plates are expired ?"...I politely said yes, and told him the plates had expired nearly 25 years earlier....he just about crapped at the side of the road.....he wanted to know why the car had 25 year old plates on it...I told him the car had been in storage since 1971....the car was sold and I was transporting it home for the last time....I had put 3K miles on the S-Bird that summer with 25 year old plates on it the entire time....he wanted to see paperwork, I had NONE with me...I finally told him he would either have to let me go, or just shoot me at the side of the road....he smiled and let me go on my way.....the car was shipped to Tn. the next morning to it's new owner and I never saw it again.....I got stopped in a '78 Pace Vette with no plates at all....drove it that way for weeks.....the cop walked up to the car and said" Mr. Bell....did you know you don't have any plates on your car"....I looked at him and realized he had been my paperboy years earlier....told him I had just bought the car and was going to get it plated soon.....he let me go....sold the car a few days later and it was gone anyway.....bottom line, small town and lucky I guess....always had legal plates on the cars my kids and wife drove, mine rarely had real plates on them....My orange Prowler only had real plates on it the last few months I owned it....drove it all over the USA with plastic plates that said "PROWLER"....gotta have a little fun sometimes....

When I went in to buy my plates for the Prowler ( only $150 here) the guy at the DMV told me to apply for "Street Rod" plates, he thought they would give them to me since the way the application reads is " Any car manufactured in any year can qualify as long as it resembles a production car built prior to 1959" the Street Rod plates I think are priced the same way as collectors so here they are like $50 and that is for as long as you own it. May be worth a try.

I was trying to stay out of the state recall crap but now I will be in the thick of it.

Block-Buster,

If you live "IN" California, you can't avoid the recall crap. You are part of the process.

If you meant by staying out of, you weren't going to vote, then you can't argue with the outcome. Nor any tax hikes imposed upon Californians if the right guy/gal doesn't win.

State and national elections rarely garner more then 10-15% of the populus even bothering to vote.

I'm always amazed when someone says, "So-and-so won the popular vote". Yea, popular with the 10% that bothered to vote. Not eactly a majority.

Vote for whomever you want BUT, VOTE!!!

To those that think their one vote doesn't matter, one has only to look at the last presidential election to see how the smallest of margins make a difference.

I'm not trying to pick on you specifically, I'm just amazed at the amount of apathy towards elections that alot of the same folks that get all upset about new taxes, bills, ad nausem voice.

If you don't like the system. Vote the bazterds out!!!

Im still hot but will cool off in time, but am thinking of moveing the car out of state maybe to Montana as I have a brother that is up there.

As for voteing that is what gives me the right to bit(* about the out come seems like I always vote for the wrong guy so I must not to smart. Its not just the prowler it is also a 32ft 5th wheel a 01 PT a 97 neon and a 90 Aclaim, the Prowler going up $500.00 is bad enough but add all the others and it will be a chunk of change.

at least I sent in my 03 donation check to POA before I got the bill, even though Mike hasnt cashed it yet.

very interesting what others pay around the country, if you got caught with a phonie plate in ca they would impound your car on the spot, dont think I up for the tow truck picking up "SUNKIST"

Glad to here you vote. Kudos.

As far as picking the right candidates, if they talk of various new social programs or more they can do for you and I, this is a veiled attempt to tell you they must up your taxes to pay for all the new social programs.

The more government does, the more they need to take from us as there is no money tree in Washington.

Why some folks that vote can't figure that out is beyond comprehension.

Hope you guys get a good candidate this time around.

Curtis - I know what you mean. My registration is coming due in March and I figured out that mine would be around that much too (by looking at this years and adding back in the VLF reduction).

I too am going to have to PNO my kat... or sell it. I won't be able to afford to register it

BTW - I just got the registration for my 2K1 Dodge Dakota... $392. Ridiculous.

If I didn't have 18 years into my pension, I would be looking to move out of this idiotic State!

Gary... I envy you man!

It is absolutely incredible how much your renewal is.My sister lives in L.A. and she complains about it all the time.
So the question is:
Will Arnold change things around for you(if he gets elected)?
To have the renewal done in Ontario,it costs $74 per year(not too bad considering)!
