I know many states in the US have some sort of Property tax on your vehicles which you pay EVERY year. Isn't that considered "doubled taxation" since the owner pays sales tax on the vehicle when he/she buys the Vehicle? What states have Property tax on vehicles? How much would an Avg Prowler owner pay in 2002? FL - $0 In the state of CT the Avg Prowler owner would pay about $900 tax in 2002. I noticed at local car shows many vette owners register there cars in a state that has no property tax on vehicles.... How can an owner register a car out of state but still maintain in-state insurance and drivers Licence? ------------------ This message has been edited by spoons on 12-23-2002 at 04:03 PM |

The Kentucky property tax bill on my 2000 black was based on a book value of $33,500.00 and I paid $476.50. Here you don't pay property tax in the year you purchased vehicle. Since I paid State sales tax when I bought the car in 2001, the 2002 proprty tax bill was first on this car. |

Illinois does NOT do that foolish taxation, thank goodness or I would NOT be a car enthusiast/collector! My understanding is that they have a secondary residence or "friends" address that the car gets titled at to keep it from getting hit with those in-state taxes. Other than that arrangement ... no clue. FYI, that was one of the things that Jesse Ventura addressed as the Govenor of MN. He likes cars too and thought is sucked to pay out the butt each year ... |

Ray, I hear in IL there is no property tax on vehicles, but tax on your home is high? Any truth to that? I agree with Jesse, why should you pay out the butt for owning a nice car! I think it's stupid to tax people EVERY year on that Car! |

In Kentucky we may pay property tax on cars but having owned property in several states property tax rate on homes/real estate is lower than Indiana or Ohio. Our sales tax in 6% compared with Florida's - what is it now 8.75%? So if I spent $20,000 in a year it would cost an extra $550.00 in sales tax. |

Spoons ... real estate taxes are all over the board. One can figure as low as 1.75% of the homes value on up to and probably past 3.5% ... so on a $250,000 house ... well, you do the math. And sales tax is just as off the shelf ... city is 8.5% or higher, go out western burbs and you can get 6.25%. So where you buy your cars here is just as important as the selling price. Such a game ... but that every year property tax on vehicles ... no way! Even our plates (tags for you southerners) are fairly reasonable still, like $78 for personalized (containing at least one number) and I think $91 for vanity (all letters). Not sure what a regular ole random assigned plate costs each year ... don't have one of those! |

In Pennsylvania, we don't pay property tax on vehicles, but we have a lot of other taxes and Real Estate tax as well. I figure no matter where you live the states are raising revenue one way or another. Doesn't matter what it is on or what its called, they get it one way or another. |

In the state of Oregon we pay no property tax on cars and license on my two Prowlers is about $100 for four years per car, $200 for both cars. And we have no sales tax in this state but we have one of the highest state income tax probably in the US, it's just about as high as the federal income tax. For Christmas I got my kats a new furnace in the garage so they could stay warm. Installed it myself, quite a job. Bill 2002 Gold 2002 Candyapple Red |

I paid 7% sales tax on my Kat here in Minnesota, and another $700 to license it during the first year, because it was a 2002. Had I bought a 2001 model, I would have paid the same 7% sales tax, but only $199 to license it. Jesse reduced all vehicle license tab (registration) fees to $199 in the 2nd year of ownership, $99 the year after and a sliding scale in years that follow. This was a campaign issue he ran on, and he delivered. He probably saved me a couple of grand over the life of my Kat. We do NOT pay property tax on vehicles in Minnesota. Kevin ------------------ |

I paid 3% on the purchase price of $39,650 when I bought my '02 yellow this past July. Vanity tag was $30. Total cost the day I got my plate was $1,215. Combined city/county tax due 12/01/02 (you can bet I didn't pay it before the due date!) was $514.80 based upon a value of $39,080. Blue Kat - Your personal property taxes are high, but I'll take them for your nation's lowest gasoline taxes any day! ------------------ |

Guys, It's weird that each state is so different with their taxs. I think paying tax on a vehicle EVERY year is rediculous and a rip off. I think FL and AL are the best states to register a car because it's $36 for reg, NO emissions test, NO inspection, and NO property tax. |

quote: Yep, when I bought mine in Lousiana and drove it back here to register it in Florida in 2000, I think I walked out of the DMV paying a little over $300. I worked out an in-and-out deal with the dealer on the car I was selling and the $300 included the difference in the amount in taxes. No yearly taxes, just the $35 or so to renew the registration. ------------------ • MTD Prowler Intake System 2.2 |

MD: No silly tax like that! I didn't even think there was such a ridiculous tax! Southern MD real estate taxes are really low. the lowest I've ever seen. Imagine paying about $800 taxes per year for every $100,000 of house value! |

Indiana has no property tax so to speak on personal property, BUT it is made up on plates .......02 Prowler $380. to plate it for 2003......2000 Prowler was approx $275.....I think personalized plates are were an extra $48. Many people in Indiana go to Ohio and plate their cars, last I knew it was a flat $25.....may have changed thru the years... |

Ohio is about $ 45 for a car. I don't think it is exactly the same throughout the state since the counties can add a local tax. I just renewed the plate on the PT and my m/c and it was just under $ 80. For the PT it was $ 20 to the state, $ 20 to the county and probably $ 3 or so to the registrar as their fee. The m/c was $ 14 & 20 & ?. If you need a new plate it is an additional $ 5 or $ 10. They change the design every 5 years or so. We also have eCheck in this county and that is $ 20 every two years, I think. I have collector plates on the Prowler so I don't have to do that. eCheck is not statewide, either. Therefore, everyone does not pay the same rates although they are still reasonable. |

I took delivery last month on my 2000 ,never registered black Kat, and I have been debating what to do . My father-inlaw offered to let me register in Fla. using his condo address. Might be worth trying. Here in Ct. ,they get you every which way. |

I don't know how that would impact your insurance, if you were ever in an accident. If you get stopped and the registration does not match the address on your driver's license, you could also have a problem. I am not saying it wouldn't work, or you shouldn't do it. I am just pointing out a potential problem, possibly. |

Taxes? I don't think its easy in CT to get away with registering a car out of state. My Nanny tried to do it and was stopped twice. If the cops in your town see you driving around with a car with out of state plates you better have a out of state Drivers license. CT has some of the highest taxes in the nation you either except it or move. Its 6% tax on my Prowler to register it. Vanity Plates (standard)are $81. Property taxes on Vehicles and equiptment (for Business). Every town has a millrate, so in the town i live its 33.8 mills. It could be 30 in another town. Also there are different percentages of assessed value. I pay $1170 per month property taxes,(Home) and once a year i pay for my 4 Cars and one Truck. I don't like Januarys to much!!LOL ------------------ |

I paid 5% sales tax when we purchased the Prowler. Tags run about $800.00 per year. We have no personal property tax on vehicles. Also, I believe we have one of the lowest property taxes around. On 62 acres with house and garage I pay under $300.00. Of course you must live in the middle of nowhere Wildoming to get this good deal and most do not want to. That's OK more space for me. |
