"SUNKIST" got kissed in the parking lot at work today smashed in the drivers door by a fellow worker and also tore the cover, anyone know if the new doors come in painted to match?? and how much? with the the price of side panels at about 1600.00 the doors must be 4 or 5K I suppose. quote: Why are you doing all the leg work if someone else hit your car? If you saw it or know who it was, I'd make them (or their insurance company) pay for it all. Sounds like it was deliberate if they hit it hard enough to tear the cover and dent the door though. Good Luck |

quote: The point is, why do anything? Let his insurance do it all and get a BRAND NEW door, not a used one off of eBay. I'd also make darn sure they painted it exactly the same color. Metal flake paint is very tough (if not impossible) to match unless the painter is a real pro. I had a bronzette beige BMW a number of years ago that got sideswiped. This is an impossible color to match. Kind of a silvery beige bronze looking metal flake color. Dealer painted it once, and the door looked more brown then beige. Painted it again and it looked more silver then beige. In both cases, it was obvious in plain daylight which door got hit. Under flourescent lights, it really stuck out. Anyway, they agreed to let a local custom guy give it a try. He matched it perfectly. His trick? He had a role of masking tape that was 4-5" wide with big circles cut out every 12" or so. He ran the tape down the side of the car and would paint over one of the wholes, peel back the tape and see how close he was. Then add more metal or brown or silver. By the time he got to the 3-4 hole, he was spot on (pardon the pun). Amazing!!! |

Curtis, Sorry to hear about your Prowler. There will be no problem for a reputable shop to match that Orange. Just make sure you are happy with the repair work before you accept the vehicle at the repair shop. The proper way to match any color is to spray out the color onto sample pieces and compare to the body panel on the vehicle. It is not a good practice to use the vehicle as a test pattern. Most dealership paint department employees work strictly off of a flat rate payment system and they just want to get the vehicle done as close as possible and as fast as possible so that employee can get as many hours logged onto his paycheck as possible. Any redo's that employee has to do will be done for free, as it should be. So with that in mind, the dealership will get that vehicle in and out of that shop as quickly as possible with as little effort to make the car perfect as possible. When you take it to a reputable paint shop that deals with non-production type paint work, they tend to take that extra care to make sure the vehicle is done correctly, because there reputation is on the line and word of mouth is better than any advertising within the local community. I agree to not purchase the door skin off of EBay. There could be too many issues with that. Is the inner door frame bent as well. Are there components inside the door that could be damaged and won't be noticed until the door is disassembled? I'm sure this damage was an accident and you might be trying to help this fellow employee out and not run it through insurance, but, make sure someone really looks for damage that is not visible from the outside? Just a few of my thoughts. I'm sure all will work out just fine. ------------------ This message has been edited by Norb @ TGF on 11-07-2002 at 11:48 AM |

quote: How does it help him by not using the guys insurance? I am always amazed at the number of people that never want to claim anything on their insurance. What do you think you are buying insurance for? And unless you are hitting cars weekly, monthly, or yearly for that matter, it shouldn't raise his rate (especially for a door ding) Last year I sold one of our rent houses and included a homeowners warranty insurance policy (at my cost) to the new guy. Well, for about 8 months after closing, any time something went wrong or needed service, he'd call our real estate agent to try to get us to pay for it. I finally called the guy and explained to him that he bought the house "as-is, where-is" and that my responsibility ended with the clean inspection and closing. And that a storm 6 months later that rips a few shingles off the room is not my problem. His reply, "He wanted me to fix the house cause he didn't have the money and he didn't want to claim it on the (free) insurance policy I gave him." He thought it would make the rates go up. Folks, if you are never going to use insurance, why get it at all? FYI- Christmas last year I sold my current home also to build our dream home. We moved into a rent home which caught fire a month later. Our insurance company had to pay $60K for restoration of all our goods, put us up in a hotel for 3.5 months, incidentals, everything. We are now in the new home and our rates have not gone up 1 penny (and we are with the same company) |

Don't get involved in trying to be the middle man for your co-worker. It will come back to haunt you. Let his insurance company deal with EVERYTHING, subject to you being comfortable that the shops chosen are capable of doing the work. That way, if you aren't happy with the result, it all goes back to the insurance company. If you "help" by picking the shop, buying the door parts, etc., I guarantee that if there is the slightest problem, the insurance company will find a back door to blame you. It may sound unfair if you're trying to help this guy keep it off his insurance, but a year from now, he'll be working somewhere else, and you'll still be driving your Prowler. Look after your interests first - he's a big boy, that's why he has insurance. You can't pile into an exotic car and not expect to end up with a claim... You know the saying: "No good deed goes unpunished" |

O.K., to be fair, perhaps we all don't know the entire story. Why are you shopping for parts for his insurance company or him? Does he not want to report it? If you haven't filed a claim, the longer you wait, the more it makes it easier for him to say you are lying or it never happened. Be careful. |

In response to those who showed much concern here is the latest. Hadnt really planed on a skin, but was nice of Ed to tell me about the one on e-bay, called a co called Dent Pro as the paint is not scratched was protected by the cover they said it was streched and coulndt do a perfect job. New door 24 at the depot in east coast my cost just over 1900.00 thats employee = cost plus 10% retail is 2950.00 current thought are to two tone the cat with Inca Gold, not sure at the moment if my idea looks ok would mean not painting most of the car (I dont like repaints) have had a lot of cars painted over the years so please dont try to change my mind has been called into insurance, but I feel I need to stay involved to protect myself will most likley trade car off after fixed Al-thanks for the block on the goal line your always ther for me block-buster |

Hey, at the rate you are going. these cars will really be rare in a few years. LOL! If you do a two-tone, here's an idea, why not orange and your other favorite color...black! Now you would have the best of both worlds (well, your worlds anyway) Leave the hood, trunk, top fold of doors, and fenders orange and make the sides black (also an easier color to match if it gets hit again). Very retro! They run a ribbon of black pinstripe around the hood, doors, and trunk. THE ORANGE-TIE. (I actually like it!!!) |
