OK..I have one for you, When we go to start the Prowler the thing is dead, SOmetimes u can play with the shifter and get it to start we also have been able to jump start it, Thought it was the battery but battery checks good. Thought it might be the alarm but not sure since vehicle will start with alram set also, So I'm confused. Guess few questions: I'm really confused on this one. ------------------ |

There are three things you could look at: Neutral safety switch Starter solenoid Starter motor If the lights and radio work etc, and the battery checks good, but you hear no "click" when you turn the key to start it...take a hard look at the starter solenoid and associated wiring. If you have a 12V test light, you can look at the switched wire to the starter solenoid while someone turns the key. If the test light does not come on (engine does not crank) then try moving the gear selector from park to neutral and see if it cranks. Is it the neutral switch? Try putting it in neutral to start it instead of Park. If it works every time in neutral you have a bad switch. You could also have a flat spot on the starter motor/flywheel. Will the lights come on? Try starting it with the headlights on while someone watches them. If they go out completely you may have a dead cell in the battery. I am sure there are more possibilities that I am not thinking of. I would also check the battery cable connections at both ends. Even though it looks tight and clean, it only takes a thin coat of corrosion to prevent a good contact. Clean it and try it. That is a free fix that only takes a few minutes. I had a similar problem...my key would`nt come out of the ignition. I stop by the dealer and he shifted it up and down through the gears and the key just slipped out. But then it wouldnt start. He said the shifter lock thing-in-mo-jigger was loose...about an hour later I had my car and have`nt had any problems since. So Iam guesing its your shifter lock thing-in-mo-jigger. (Yes its a real word, just has`nt found its way into the dictionary.) yet. ------------------ |

If everything is dead and the battery is good, all I can think of is a bad connection where the cables hook up to your battery posts....Try sanding the posts and put some contact goo on before hooking the cables back. |

Oh yeah...I had that problem on my Z28 where it wouldn't start. Turns out there was a bad ground that popped up whenever the black battery cable moved a certain way.... |

I just had to replace both the battery in the Kat and my wifes car. Both over 3 years old. Both checked good. Both had a dead cell. Bought new Die Hard batteries at Sears. they said it was not uncommon for a battery to check good but have a dead cell. If you can jump start it then its probably the Battery. Mine drove me nuts for a couple weeks. I could jump start mine as well. I replaced the battery and have had no problems since. |

Sounds like possibly a bad ignition switch. JRL |

quote: Don - this might be an outside chance with your cat, but mine did the same thing once. It was the red positive cable leaving the battery and curving away from the battery, on the underside of that bend a small hole was developing and corrosion was taking place in the cable. Bending the cable violently got it running again! Dealer service depart. opened the cable, cleaned out the corrosion, and put some rubberized goop back on the cable area that they worked on. I thought this was a cheeszy fix by them, but they said the red cable wiring harness going back to computer is a major pull and fix, and the cable cost is $800 (???) I needed the cat then, and didn't want to wait until the part came in to get it back. Still not sure if their fix is enough to satisfy the problem, and if that is the solution. ------------------
