There has been much discussion lately about the banners, dial-up loading times, etc. I've been thinking about something else with regard to all of this. Now, I'm far from being a computer guru, but another thought came to mind. How much space do the banners take up on a server? This club has been growing by leaps and bounds.......more members posting, more banners, more features for the site, TONS of pictures posted, etc. Is space on the server an issue? I would think it would have to be at some point? Do we need a bigger server? Mike K...can you enlighten us? If we do need a bigger server now and for the future, (as I know this site and group will continue to grow) perhaps we all should think about helping Mike out with the costs for something like this. It was great for Mike and Tony to start this site for us but who knew it would get this big? I, personally, don't think that it should be totally up to Mike to fund this site on his own. When it first started two years ago, I suggested we all pitch in. What do all of you think? If I am way off base on this, I apologize, but it makes sense to me.........it's just my logical mind working overtime again. Mike, if this is an issue, maybe this could be next week's poll. See how many people would be willing to pay a nominal fee per year to help fund the site? We don't have to pay dues or anything........... |

I am more than willing CJ. I brought this up a long time ago and since this and eBay are about the only two things I visit regularly, I would be more than happy to help fund it. Lord knows I spend a lot of money on eBay. |

I think it would be a good idea for all of us to pitch in and help, if that is what Mike would like. We do not want to force this on him but he has done so much to help all the Prowler owners. An annual/monthly fee to use the site would be fine with me. I do not always turn my banner on because I forget. Yes I like seeing them, but if you post more than once in a thread, I don't think it should be used in every post. ------------------ |

We are more than willing to help by paying a fee. My only apprehension is will it keep others from joining and participating. Maybe there should be a free registration process and xxx months at No Charge. Whatever is decided, this is one great web site!! Marty |

If anyone wants to talk about "real-world" experiences of web-site-for-money, feel free to drop me a line (I doubt it would be of interest, or even appropriate, to all). However, an Amazon Honor System and/or PayPal donate additions might be useful, if this site needs to start paying its own way (or at least part of it). BTW - I'm making no assumptions one way or the other on the need, just responding in kind to the thread. |

The biggest bottleneck is most likely bandwidth available to individual members. We all need to solve this on our own i.e. If you are not happy with the connection speed you have, upgrade to something faster. Drive space on the server is another issue wrt the amount of photos etc, we all post. Like Ed, I would also be happy to chip in $$$ for additional server upgrades in this regard if necessary. |

I see nothing wrong with helping with the site's expenses and would be glad to. It is ultimately Mike's decision whether he wants any assistance or not. I don't feel it would keep people away if they were really interested in participating. ------------------ |

There are a lot of ways that we could help out. Sell t-shirts of some kind with the profit going toward the server. Voluntary donations...........doesn't have to be mandatory. |

CJ, I dont think your off base at all. I do think the advertizers are the ones keeping the site free for right now. However, there's a saying out there that says "theres nothing in life for free" and another that says, "The BEST things in life are free" so which is it? LOL I certainly am for a membership fee if requested. I cant deny the fact that I BLEW 60 bucks to that other site and all I got was a T-shirt! Ive spent nothing for a mambership here and have made PRICELESS memories and Friendships! Im in.... whatever the decision the directors see fit...Im all for it, Koz its been GREAT so far! |

Memory is pretty cheap, folks... All of the banners on this site would probably fit on a single CD 100 times. (The scrapbooks are more memory-intensive than the banners.) Nevertheless, more storage costs more to maintain. I host virtually all of my posted graphics on my own website. If I am posting a graphic that contains particularly useful technical advice, then I upload it to the POA server, so that it will be in POA archives (in case anything happens to me). (I don't always follow this rule, but I do most of the time). Most of you have website space available that you are probably not using. Most ISP providers give you, by default, 5MB, 10MB, or 20MB of storage before they charge you extra (above your standard fee). You just need to learn how to access it. (Consult your ISP, ask them and they will tell you how to do upload images.) ------------------ |

POA are great, I wold like to help, when I did retired from engineer (13 years ago) I had open up a computer store in Idaho and done well. I just sold the store and permanently retired. I have a lot of computer parts left before inventory sold out I took some home, if someone can tell me what kind of server and operating system you are using it I might be able to help POA a lot. I sold most of my servers and work stations to the large and small company included Idaho State University, Shoshone Bannocks Tribe and more if you want to check my references I will be glad to give you all you want. I remember I have some of these parts: One Dual Tyan AMD, one Intel Pentium 4 and several Pentium 3 motherboard. Ton of DDR, SD and RD RAM memories, most memory is 256 or 512 MB, CDRW, one or two WD 100 GB 7200 RPM IDE hard drive, video card Network Card and some of the Hewlett Pacard Hub or if POA want to let myself build one server for you I will do it just pay for the parts I don't have I can buy at very reasonable price, let me know the spec. and operating system of POA server and I will be glad to help. All the parts I mention above if POA need, I will give to POA at no charge just let me know.

VirginiaCatDude is right.. MOST ISP's (the place you pay for your internet connection) also give you space for a website. My banner and any pictures I post are stored there, requiring no space from the ProwlerOnline server. If there is indeed a shortage on ProwlerOnline we could all pitch-in by educating ourselves on how to store the images in our on space. CJ Once again you have brought things to our attention that many of us have thought over the years. I like the idea of helping with the cost of the site and a small fee from all would go along way. Then when we meet as a group we can run raffles, 50/50 draws and sell things with the profits going to the POA.. That way we don't frighten anyone away, we do have allot of people who visit but don't talk/write but love to keep informed.

We've all ridden on Mike's coat-tails for some time now and enjoyed the ride at no charge. Like others, this site is valuable to me and I'd agree to a small fee to keep it available and to help Mike defray some of his costs. |

quote: The chat room doesn't take up space... (Besides we will be using the chat room to plan events). In terms of storage space, the event scrapbooks and personal scrapbooks (with all the images) by far dwarf everything else on the site combined. The folks who can really help shift the burden from POA are the ones who upload images. If you take the time to learn how to upload images to your own website (to space that you are already paying for anyway), then that would help to shift the burden from the POA server. You would be surprised how easy it is. Your internet service provider can probably step you through the process in 5 or 10 minutes. ------------------ |

I say we band Alleycat, ed and cj as they post way tooo much I would do what ever it takes to keep this running smooth. but the banners their is a lot of people that can only get dial-up. At my house that is the only thing offered out there. I hate going on this site at home it takes way to long to do anything on it.I am sure a lot of people have the same proublem. so keeping the banners down to a mimumm would be nice,i know they are kool but ya got ta do what ya gotta do. and think of other PEOPLE. A monthly fee would work and only for people that have over like 75 post or more. |

Just my two cent worth... CJ is right on the money ..again! We already have a forum for selling things...most of us have "things" we don't need, have duplicates of, have long lost their luster, etc. My suggestion is to raffle/sell these things and the proceeds go for upgrades/mantainence/support of this site. That way, no one has to chase down anyone for dues/money or gets disconnected and we have some fun looking at the "junk" everyone sells to someone that might really enjoy that "new" thing. |

I agree with you CJ [B]I feel about this site/club/family just like I feel about my Kat. I will do absolutely anything to keep them forever!!! [B] We all owe Mike & his family so much gratitude for what we have here. Now we can have the opportunity to do our part & keep this site growing and thriving as it has been!!! I love the banners, the personal scrapbooks, the scrapbooks of the events I could not attend & even the great "online CAAP store catalog" that CJ was kind enough to take the time to set up... As I said... I will do what it takes & you can count me in... Besides... How else could I find out what Fixumm looks like so I know to run the other way??? WildBill |
