That's what it would cost you to make your own brace, I used 1 1/2" x 1/2" solid aluminum bar stock. I bought grade 8 bolts, washers and used the stock lock nut's, I also gave it a light polishing. Al |

You beat me by $5.74! But I used aircraft grade aluminum. I think I am going to have mine powder coated. ------------------ |

Al, Do you plan on making yourself the lower bar as well? Just curious? ------------------ |

The aluminum is 6061 which is the the same grade used on the Prowler, I didn't include the $1.40 it cost in gas to get everything. All in all I'm very pleased with the results, next will be the lower brace. |

quote: The bar is 18 1/2" long, the holes are 16 1/4" on center I dilled one hole and marked where the other one should go, I installed the bar using one bolt and checked to see if the mark lined up where the other hole should be. Once you're sure where to drill remove the bar and drill out the hole, I used my drill press when drilling the holes, that way the holes were straight. The hole size is 8mm just like the bolt that holds it in place. Here's a picture of the brace before the install. This message has been edited by Al's Prowler on 04-17-2002 at 08:57 PM |

So where can i get aluminum like you used? And also, which do you think is better: the solid aluminum or the hollow aluminum bar? ------------------ Nitrous Express Nitrous Oxide System |

I made a correction on the hole measurement, the holes are 16 1/4" on center not 16 1/2", I don't know why I typed that in? Jason, I bought the bar from a welding shop that also sells supplies, also look in the yellow pages and see if there's anyone who sells steel and aluminum metals. Without a doubt solid is better then hollow anytime, good luck if you choose to make your own. |

Hello Al, I'm just a novice with these things - can you tell me what size the new (longer) bolts need to be? Thanks. Chuck |

WildBill, I just used one of those small polishing wheels you can use with a drill, it's not the best but for what I wanted it works fine. I used some white automotive polishing compound, with a little more polishing I could have gotten a mirror look but I wasn't looking for that. |

Funny about this...I am picking up my aluminum tomorrow. I bought a 12' piece of 1" x 1" solid bar stock and am going to have it cut into 6 2' pieces. If it fits as planned i will make the additional 5 into braces and offer them very for a reasonable price ------------------ *99 Yellow *Borla Exhaust *Mud Flaps *Mac Cold Air *Yellow Windshield Banner "Prowler" *MGW Prowler Hitch Cover "COOL" *Logo Valve Stem Caps *Chrome Wheels Done Aftermarket *No Front Bumpers w/Tom Mills Bumper Covers *Removed Visors *Chrome License Plate Frame *Ceramic Brake Pads *Air Patrol *Painted Black Gloss Rear Bumpers *Shimmers Bumper Yellow & Clear Tail Lights *Flames *Multiple Coats ZAINO |

I actually just got to thinking that we have a welding shop at the school i work at an i bet that they have some pieces of aluminum down there that they could hook me up with. Wild Bill - Ive been doing good. Just got my bottle filled while i was down in florida. Im running my 75 hp shot and i am thrilled with it. I might still go higher though.... ------------------ Nitrous Express Nitrous Oxide System |

Chuck, the stock bolt is 1 1/2" long so I just got 2" bolts, I know some guys have used 2 1/2" bolts but I don't like the looks of the exposed threads. |

k... call me 'stupid' (wouldnt be the first time lol), but what is the "Purpose" of having braces? Thanks ------------------ |

Geno, the purpose of the bar is to tie the two front shock absorber towers together which adds stability to the front end which in turn cuts down on the car tending to drift when on a rough road and going around a curve. It works. Secondly, solid is better since you can crush a hollow tube when tightening down the bolts. Drill the first hole and loosely attach the bar and then stick a golf pencil in the hole in the other shock tower and mark the bar with the pencil. Drill the hole on the line. Then you know you have the holes the correct distance apart. ------------------ |

I made my braces out of steel tubing with threaded heim ends. This way they're adjustable in length. I think the MAC brace that everyone copied (including myself) has a slotted top hole on both sides. Do you think this was done to allow for different hole to hole measurements to make up for manufacturing tolerances? To make the fit exact for your car, it might be better to fit and drill one end and bolt it in place and then mark the other hole for drilling. Just my opinion. As far as I know, ALL the hardware on the car is metric, but some can be replaced with SAE bolts. ------------------ |
