I try to wash my car at least once a week and find the wheelwells are ugly when they are dirty. My color yellow doesnt help and I feel if the wells are dirty the car is not really clean. I was thinking about taking off the wheels and spraying black undercoating on them, I think it would look cleaner? Has anyone done this and do you feel Ill hurt the value by blacking out the wells. Or am I just nuts???? Thanks Mike |

Mike, two problems I see with doing the wheel wells with black undercoating. 1. Many times the kind of spray you buy in an auto parts doesn't stick that well, you could have more problems with it flaking off. 2. Unless the color of dirt is different in Florida brown dirt will still look bad, if you still want to do take to a place like Ziebart.JMO Al |

Have you tried putting ceramic brake pads on? Keeps the dust away. If you wash your car this much I suspect this is the problem ------------------ |

quote: Hi, just read this, I put the undercoat on to protect against rocks hitting under the fender, causing star burst on the other side. I had two show up from rocks last year. Cant see the underside of the front fenders. I'm not show how good it would look at the rear wheel wells in black. I also use it under the nose to though, with it color matched to the car, to help with scuff marks on it.

What about using a product called rock guard by 3M you see them use it alot out here on the rocker panels and they paint it the same colour as the vehicle after they spray it on might be an idea to look into PK |

Had not thought about the rocks causing damage...so it might be good idea to have color matched truck bed lined stuff sprayed in wheel wells and under the front fenders. I might have to look into this My wheel wells look better then the day I brought it home I always wash the wheel wells and the front fenders on the bottom side when the car gets washed. Yes, it can be done. Plus when the fenders were off I cleaned them & waxed them, then recleaned when the tires were off. Attention to detail. Most people give me a hard time because the time I spend cleaning it at car shows. Maybe that is why I do not have any more room for trophies. Here are some pictures regarding your problem...
Give me a call @ 800 669 3540 if you are interested in some of the details... what to do and NOT to do. It is one of the best things I have ever done... but one of the most time consuming too! Jay PS... this Cat had over 12,000 miles on the odometer when these pictures were taken and I finally got up the nerve to "paint" the wheel wells. ------------------ This message has been edited by YELLER CAT on 04-08-2002 at 08:05 PM |

Wow Jay,, I am impressed. Looks really great. I am just getting into polishing on mine. Still working on the front end parts. Your way ahead. I really like it. On another note for star burst dents on the front fenders. There is another product that is used by some. Like a 1/8 thick foam pad that adheres to the underside. I forget the name and have no experience with it. There is one guy here who uses it. I will find out his thoughts. Jan, you maybe right on having to redo the undercoat on the front fenders. But I have no problem with the underside being black. If it was a different color, say silver as the car it would show all the road gunk. My only concern is to avoid rocks hitting the underside of the fenders. I've had to fix two fenders before I applied the stuff. I've got 39,000 miles on the car and going for 10k more this summer. (well the car has 39k, the motor is a different story, ,,, ) |

Jay, after seeing your post on dirty wheel wells, Vickie and I were wondering when was the last time you saw Nancy. Now we know what she means when we call and she says "Jay is underneath the car". Happy detailing! ------------------ |

FYI... What you see is NOT Black Undercoating, which never really cures hard. What you see is a "brush on" pickup truck bed coating which cures hard... very, very hard and can be washed, clean, waxed and it will remain "good looking". I did have one small area peel off, but that was simply due to improper preparation before application. The base material must be cleaned with a solvent (I used lacquer thinner) and at least 2 coats of bed liner coating applied. I recently took the wheels off to see if any touch up was required and found very, very little that was needed. Should touch up be necessary, it goes on a lot easier than the first coat. Would I do it again? YES, the very first thing... even before installing SHIMMERS and SSS Prowler muffler! It really makes a difference. Sincerely, Jay ------------------ |
