Glad to see someone from my hometown owns a Prowler. I was born and raise in Sheboygan. My parents still live there. I went to Sheboygan North High and graduated in 1980. In 1982 moved to Texas.

As per your question CJ or Laddie would know the answer. It has been posted before.

Here is what was posted on an earlier post:

The Production Number is posted on a label attached to the hood support bracket on the left hand(drivers side of the door). This was true for the 1997,1999, and 2000. The numbers were sequential from 1997 forward. Not sure about the 2001. This number is approximate but should be reasonably close.
MDH on the drivers door jam gives you the Month/Day/Hour your vehicle was completed.
Hope that helps.

from what I've been able to gather, only the Woodward and the Black Tie are sequentially numbered (ex: 001/151) in addition to their VIN number, as they are limited editions under the Plymouth name. All prowlers under the Chrysler name, even the Malholland edition, use only a standard VIN number. Because the Prowler and Viper both share the same production facilities, their VIN numbers kind of cross over each other (one VIN may be a Prowler but the next VIN in order may be a Viper) it all depends on what comes off the assembly line first (although i may be wrong).

My car was built in June of `98. I tried to find out what # it was. The VIN is shared with the vipers so this cannot be used.

Not all cars have the tag on the left hood support, mine included, so this does not help.

Debbie is right the MDH will tell you what day and the hour it was started to be built.

the VON (off window sticker) tells some info but only if you have inside connection willing to look it up.

Look at the day and average 14 cars a day 5 days a week minus holidays (maybe 20 days per year) from July of 97 and should give you a rough idea.

good luck

Just an FYI:
The MDH sticker is produced and attached when the vehicle leaves the assembly line, not when it starts down the line.

The Vipers and Prowlers share build sequence numbers and VIN "sequencing" as determined when either vehicle "interacts" with it's respective line. Actually, I believe the VIN is assigned as the vehicle starts the line, (can anyone confirm this?) since I know it is stamped into at least two places of the Viper frame on the "early" half of the assembly line. So the VIN has to be known prior to vehicle completion at the end of the line. Also, since most of the Vipers are built to customer order and a VIN is already assigned to the order, a buyer can follow the vehicle through the assembly process. I would assume the VIN for the Prowler is assigned prior to assembly as well, hence allowing for tracking of components installed on the running build change components put in to the vehicle.
The MDH is determined at the end of the line though...

Time of VIN assignment would be a great question for a Factory Tour. Also - does anyone know how many locations a stamped VIN appears on a Prowler? - and where?

About the closest way to determine production number sequence is if the numbered sticker is on the left hood hinge area of the car - a big if... My Jan 2000 Black has the sticker, "Vehicle # PR-5378" and the MDH was 010611 (Jan 6 2000, 11am) while the VIN ends in 3894. This production number does not necessarily represent production sequence either though. Maybe the only way to know the real production number would be to research all the VIN & MDH numbers and count from the first produced VIN upward to your vehicle, based on MDH data. Now, would the number obtained by this method be correct? It would include the pilot and test cars produced, would it not? Also, wouldn't the production label near the left hood hinge also be on a pilot/test car? (So much for validity of THAT number!) Knowing those "special" VINs for the pilot & test cars, then removing them from the data obtained, it may be possible to determine what number "production" Prowler is produced and when in the build history. Not an easy task, but these numbers do exist - just not for the general public. Then again, I may be completely wrong here. (It's happened before!) Clear as mud now, 'Eh?

GPS, I won't address every point you made since I agree with most of it. It has been reported that the VIN numbers are not sequential due to the sharing with Vipers and it was also my understanding that they still did not follow numerical order. In other words 456789 may have come thru the line before 456788 assuming that they both were Prowlers. If the VINs were assigned before they ever started down the line they would not necessarily need to be in order. As Wildcat pointed out, they were all made exactly the same until a change was made and then the change was made to all of them from that point on. They did not need to keep track of which vehicle they were working on. They all got the exact same parts.

As far as how many places the VIN is stamped into the frame (and other parts), that information is never released to the general public in order to help foil professional auto thieves. If they know that there are only 2 stamped VINs they would grind them both off, if accessible, or discard that part so any not to be readily traceable. If they know it is 3, they would attempt to obliterate all 3, etc. Therefore it is NEVER released to the public for any auto. Naturally the information is known to some people and therefore it can be obtained. It would be better if it was not put on this website, in my opinion. It might be a security feature one of us needs somewhere down the road. I am not chastising you, just pointing out the reason it is not well known.

Ed,
I agree about the security issues on location of the VINs. I would assume there are at least two locations, but I have followed the Viper assembly more than the Prowler assembly. (Call it first love?) I have always wondered when the VIN is assigned to a vehicle though. Maybe on the next tour I'll have an answer to these questions. Useless trivia to fill the Cranial Void...

This really is a great question and one I'd think everyone would be interested in. I have been trying to find our # since I purchased my Kat. I'm told that you can look at the von# to determine where in the run your car was produced. I'm not sure when this is assigned but I'd assume early in the process. If this info is correct von# 0650 would be the 650th car produced in that run. I believe the run is for one color only but if you know more on this please let me know.

From the "for what it's worth" Dept:
As a little followup for the VON, on my window sticker,
at the bottom by the bar code for the VIN info, I have
the following: L4-VON: 0825 and to the right of this is
the sold to dealer information. (Could the "L4" portion
indicate a Lot #4? i.e. Lot 1 = Purple, L2 = Yellow,
L3 = Silver and L4 = Black?) I have no clue as to VON
information and how it would affect the build of the car,
but since I'm as curious as everyone else, I thought I'd
put this data up. I also have no idea if the 0825 number
has any significance or not. Maybe by comparng this number
to the production label by the left hood hinge
(My "production" number is 5378.) will shed some
light. Then again, maybe not!

John, My Von is also L4 0147. Since my car is Red that would put a serious crimp in your theory. The colors were Purple, Yellow, Black, Red and then Silver, I think.
I have no clue what any of the numbers mean. I am not trying to contradict you just posting numbers to help decode the numbering system. My Vin ends in 503180
