Does anyone have any suggestions on removing the bumpers. I have looked it over for a month now, and I guess I am going to give it a shot. Mind you I have not wrenched in 5 years. I would like to do it as easily as possible and your comments would be helpful. I am sending off for the Tom Mills package. Keep in mind last night it took me an hour to put on the front mud flaps. I did it with out jacking the car up and with out removeing the wheels. My hands feel like they were run over by a truck. Thanks in advance. |

Ed.....have taken off several sets of these recently, this was the quickest by far.....all I used were a 13mm socket and a 13mm box end...the trick I have found is getting the right ratchet...needs to be short and low profile (flat) ...the only place I have found these ratchets is Sears...any thing else is a waste of time....I learned the hard way....use the socket on the bolt and the box on the nut.....work against each other(quicker)....do the top inside bolt first then the outside(most difficult)...I put a box under the bumper so when I loosen the last bolts the bumper has something to rest on....one plug per side to disconnect....thats it....easy with the right tools, nearly impossible otherwise....good luck Y2K YELO X 3 |

Chrome, Find a nice big tree, wrap a couple of towls around your bumper (so not to scratch the bumper) Pull up to the tree with one foot on the Brake and on foot on the gas, Then punch it!!! you will hear a slight crack then press the brake. Real easy to do. Gary does not kow what he is talikg about. ------------------ |

Bumper removal is easy, but it is frustrating and time consuming. The bolts will only move one or two clicks at a time. I used a ratchet type box end wrench and the ratchet on the other end. Working against each other gives you 3 or clicks at time. I also found that taking the grille out makes it easier to reach. ------------------ |

Ok, I think I am going to take chris's advise. I can get my hands on three of them. But the forth(upper closest to the body panel), is impossible to reach! I am going to look for a big tree. BTW, I have by grill off and it helps NOT! |

Chrome - read above again, Sears brand, smallest, flatest, shortest 1/4" ratchet they make. Anything else is a waste of time. Take your time, you have no choice here, and swear alot. Makes things go much faster! I wouldn't take the headlights out, unless you are good with a wrench. Spacers falling under car, light adjustment reinstalling, etc - could be more problems than the extra time spent doing it as above stated. JMO Good Luck |

Chrome, you do realize that the bolts are inside a triangle similar to the one that shows on the front of the bumpers. You have to go under the lower edge to reach the bolt and then it will only move one or two "clicks" on the ratchet. When these guys are talking about using box end ratchets on both the nut and the bolt, I am not following that. Mine were attached with a strip of metal so that you could not turn the nut, PERIOD. I guess that held them in place while they used an air wrench to attach them. It is not hard to do, other than it is a S-L-O-W process. |

the old posting by Y2K YELO X 3 was me...I have taken off several sets with out removing any body panels...yes, it is tedious...the last set I removed took a total of 18 minutes for the entire ordeal...it all comes down to having the right ratchet, that is the total key to success on this job.....good luck and make that trip to Sears...nothing else will do the job that I have found yet... ------------------ |

My ratchet is maybe 5 inches long. I guess you guys mean shorter than that cause, it just aint happening. I am headed to sears again to see if they have something smaller. I am also gonna try to get a 13mm box end ratchet. More progress to be reported should I have any! |

Congrats! That's about par for the course, counting all the profanity. Like they said, with the right tool... But that fourth one in the little triangular space will test you. For anyone about to have this experience, have faith, it can be done. ------------------ |

Hey Chrome, this post may be too late to help you but I found the easy way too pull the bumpers is to first remove the headlight assemblies. With those out of the way, there's an access hole that makes getting at the 2 outboard bolts easy-piece o' cake, no special tools. Just pay attention to any spacers that may be under the headlight assy. Some cars have 'em, some don't. |

Chrome, I went to two Sears stores in Cincinnati today and they do not have a shorter rachet than your 5+ inch unit. They looked in their regular and commericail catalog and no shorter 1/4" rachet is listed. What is going on guys? I have a Sears 1/4" rachet and is is exactly 51/2" and 1/2" thick body. Maybe this shorter rachet is discontinued? Rich ------------------ |

Richard, It is a 3/8th drive, short handle. I did not realize you did not know that, sorry. If you can't find one give me a call and I will lend you one. My son has a swivel necked 3/8 but that was actually a hinderance. |
