(this is for the new tip sheet)

Keep in mind that these loud, unsightly labels are required by law. Notwithstanding the above, I've run into several owners who wanted to remove them but weren't sure just how.

Remove the visors from the car and lay flat. Mask around the painted label area however the masking is not critical.

Apply several coats of "Goof Off" to the painted area but don't rub. (this is the product you buy at the local hardware for dried latex paint). Allow each coat to sit for at least a couple minutes as you want the paint good and soft.

Get a sponge/scotchbrite pad from your local grocery but be sure to get the pink and white combination that says "delicate". It also says "safe for plastic".

As a final coat, put more Goof Off on the white scotchbrite and lightly rub. All the paint will come off.

Put the visors under the faucet and wash off all the solvent with soap and water. At this point, you may notice a very slight wrinkle in the vinyl on the side where the solvent was applied. Set this side face up in the sun to dry. Or use a hair dryer. The visors will resume their original firmness.

Wait one day and apply vinyl dressing to the entire visor. DONE. They will look brand new without a single trace of the unsightly label. No black dye is needed.

Several of us in the northwest remove the visors and leave them off as we don't need them all that much and the car looks better without them. But when I'm on the road or in the south, I reinstall them. It only takes a few seconds with a philips screwdriver.

While I elbaorated a bit here, I got this Goof Off tip originally from Al Becker.

I took off the original pair and put them away. Bought an extra pair to remove the warning. I did the stuff above...
and used "KIWI" Leather Scuff Cover (in black of course) as the dressing. Can buy KIWI at most drug stores. They turned out GREAT!

Try removing the visors altogether. It gives the car a MUCH cleaner look. Othere benefits are that it is easier to see traffic lights with the top down and the whole car seems "brighter" inside. My cat is a daily driver (7500 miles since May) I counted the number of times I actually used the visors over a threee day period - 0 with the top up, 1 with top down. Since I removed them I have not missed them at all.

Happy Prowling

Being a Newbie I must ask. . .

Is there any legal ramifications of doing this and taking off the warning if you use your car on a daily basis. . .or is this like the tag on your sofa or bed matress where the government requires this message from the manufacturer for the consumer that buys the product. . .but after that. . .just like the matress yoy, as the consumer, can yank it off. . . .Or is this warning something that would be dangerous for a daily driver of a Prowler to take off?

Thanks in advance. . .I am still learning here. . .

Ray and/or Roger, how long ago did you do this? The reason I ask i that I was wondering if there was any long term affects to the material noticed. Thanks.

I have had the yellow warning off for 2 years or so, and it looks the same as when I did it. I am looking for some yellow warning signs so I can restore my car to stock. Anyone have them in good condition, all in one piece? Just the sign, not the sun visor?

The visors came off as soon as we got our cat home. They live in the basement and have been joined by the bumpers, running lights, hood emblem and a few other things. It must be the old customizing tradition. Less is more. Take it off, take it all off. Our windshield wipers ride in the trunk (with a wrench in case it rains).

Donny - 3 coats of Rain-X, and you can leave the wipers at home also.

What I have done to the visors:

Remove the wipers, apply 3 to 4 lite coats of KIWI Leather Dye BLACK. Let completely dry between each coat. Each coat on one side only, takes about 90 seconds to do. A 5 year old could do it (will test that theory with Ed). This product is found in the shoe polish area, but is Dye, not polish. Has a sponge applicator top, no mess.

YEAH, Zoom,Zoom,Zoom.....................

Another idea, stick a vanity mirror over both spots.

I thought about taking the warning labels off but they are a great conversation piece! I like to have my passengers read it and when they get to the part about "put children in the back seat" - they turn around and look and then give me a puzzled look! I love it!

Donny - You can really load up the trunk now ?

I'd be worried if I put my wiper blades in the trunk, that I'd shut the lid down and they would be under the hinge. Do bent wipers work very well?

I never believed in Rain-X until I tried it, and damn if it doesn't work. I put on three coats every six weeks or so.
