Hi Guys/Gals,
Just thought I'd post this so others are aware in case it goes on in other states.

Bought my Kat 4/13/01 (Friday the 13th) and it was time(6/12/01) to register with the DMV and get my plates. Colorado has some weird tax laws, it all depends where you live as to how much tax you pay... and this is on top of the 2.9 % state tax already paid when I took posession of the Kat on 4/13/01. So... I go into the local DMV in Westminster, CO (15 min. north of Denver) thinking I'm probably going to be writing a check for $700-$900. The lady at the desk takes all my paperwork and starts looking it over then says, "So, you bought a Prowler, how do you like it"? I respond in the usual way. Then she starts pounding the adding machine..."That will be $2669.74". She tells me with a smirk about the high Westminster tax rate and also that I am required to pay nearly $400.00 to RTD (Bus system). I asked for my paperwork back and told her I will not be registering the Kat in Westminster, I walked out. The next day I drove my truck to Craig, CO with all the Kat paperwork(3.5 hours away), I have a log cabin there for hunting/R&R purposes. The DMV in Craig, CO looks at the paperwork does some calculations and says "That will be $856.53". I smiled big and wrote the check. With plates, registration and all documents in hand I felt a real feeling of beating the system, rather than it beating me. I saved $1813.21 and had a nice drive through the mountains. Small towns...you gotta love them!

I bought my Prowler in Louisiana and drove it back here to register it. When I registered it here in Orlando, it cost me about $400 out the door (taxes, registration, etc.). I was fortunate to be able to work an in-and-out trade in deal with the dealer so that I could sell my car to a private individual and still get credit for a trade-in for tax purposes. We get many breaks here. No yearly inspections, no state taxes. I can't complain too much.

Alex - glad you took that stand. The drive was sure worth it.

Now that you saved $1800, how about joining us Deadwood bound cats for a day of cruising fun and friendship on July 1st? Heading from Loveland to Estes Park and Mountain Ridge road. You can be back home that evening! HOW ABOUT IT?

Not far from what happened to me. I bought my car NEW out of state and they made me take it to a smog check station - even though it had 10 miles on it when delivered and it passed the visual inspection at the department of motor vehicles. It IS 50 state legal and California is one of the 50 States... geesh.

Alex,
So that was a "city" tax that they wanted extra? What a crock! (SP) I had no idea that it could be different in different cities. Good job on saving the money AND on sharing the info.

I had no idea that some cities charged this kind of money to register a car. But it's a city thing you say. Here in Ohio I thought it was a rip off for $85.00 personal collector plates. WOW, to pay the kind of money we pay for these cars and then to have to pay $1000.00 to get plates is a f#@*& rip off. Bill, I will be moving to Florida within the next year. Is this what I have to look forward to?

Alex, I applaud your common sense and your unwillingness to just accept that tax (registration) bill. That's totally bogus for Colorado to register cars at different rates. Until enough people do exactly what you did and let them know you're doing it, they have absolutley no incentive to change the tax law. They can get away with it and they know most people are trapped. That's what you get when every state government office is swamped by liberals. Only you and your votes can put common sense back into government.

Edited above to tone it down because it was a little harsh, sorry.

JP.... Yes the city of Westminster wanted another $1489.00 on top of the 2.9% that I had already paid to the state. The sad thing is I could not have avoided this had I not had another residence in a less expensive "tax town". You gotta love Craig , CO... low taxes and lots and lots of Elk.

The state of Maine has what is called an Excise Tax, that you have to pay every year for each vehicle. This isn't for the tags, that another fee. The Excise Tax is based on what the car was originally worth, and goes down every year. I've had my car for 3 years, this year I have to pay the city of Gorham $575, then pay for tags. My Jeep is a '94, and its Tax is $164. At least I can claim this on my Tax forms next year. I wish I had a second residence like you.

Not sure I understand what taxes you guys are talking about living here in sunny BC Canada but my insurance costs me 1450. a year and 17% tax on the purchase price of $64,500.00 it's usually 14% but we have a luxury tax on vehicles over 30k,

I bought my cat in Indiana and they collected the luxury tax. When I registered it in Ohio I had to pay sales tax on the Luxury tax. I pointed this out to them and they said that that was correct, Sales tax on the total price of the car, including the luxury tax. Come to think of it, CJ, I do want to dump some tea on the 4th.

Alaska has the best tax system, NONE. While my brother was stationed there as a pilot in the Air-Force he registered my new car for 3 years. NO sales tax, excise tax, personal property tax, etc, just the $39 for the tags. Never had to take the car to AK, he just mailed the new stickers each year.

Now he resides in Colorado in a county w/ low taxes.

Todd...Get a grip!!! The problems CA has, has nothing to do with Bush. It is from your lousy democratic leaders that don't want power plants in your back yard... forcing CA to buy power from other states. Had CA realized its growing poulation and need for power they would have built them years ago. But NOOOOOOoooo! Your envirometalist wacko's say "Those are dirty things, we don't want them in our yard". Well now CA is paying the price for the positions your Democratic leaders have taken you all. Just heard your leader Gray "Out" Davis asked for a repeal of the clean air act that the dems put in place in the 1st place. He was deneyed by the EPA and started whining that he can't get out of his delema unless he can by pass his own "Clean air act". My wish is that CA will have an earthquack and crack off and fall in the ocean. All the Hollywood democraps, Fienstien's, Davis's and Boxer's can fend for themselves. You think Ca's in trouble now. They would take all your guns away all your cars that don't get 50 miles per gallon would have to be turned in or confistcated, their would be no hunting and the southern border would no longer exsist. What would exsist would be constant telegrams to Washington saying "Please send money we are sinking". This is not a personal attack Todd. But don't start complaining that the Republicans are the cause for taxes... we all know different.
