For anyone who's flinched at the cost of chrome plating your grill, this was done with 1/4" door edge molding. Just press it onto the vanes and trim with dikes or flush cutters. Total cost: 9 bucks. It would probably look REALLY good on a black Prowler. |

Thanks for the tip. Can you post any up-close pics of the grill? Thanks. Bill Gallagher |

Was it metal or plastic edge molding? Any deformation from the sharp radius? BTW-looks good. Larry S told me about this trick ------------------ This message has been edited by butchcee on 03-08-2001 at 12:33 PM |

It's plastic molding and it follows the curve of the grill very well-no bulges or deformation. And Special Thanks to Larry, from whom I borrowed the idea. He used a different type of molding. Here's a closer look... |

Thanks Curt - I took pictures of mine with 35mm - still have to finish off roll of film soon, but it looks like Curt's. I did use a different type of molding, but the end result was the same. I bought 40 ft. roll for $23, and used 22 1/2 feet for the grill. Thanks again Curt for posting your pictures. |

What will happen if you guys take the chrome edging off? Anyone un-install any of it yet? Larry, what did you use? Is it wider? Where did you get it? It does look good in the pictures and probably better in person. Larry, Just for your information, I NEVER eat breakfast. Sandy orders breakfast and I order Dinner or sometimes lunch. I usually am not up for breakfast, anyway. Get the pictures developed, will you. The first picture on the roll is probably your H.S. graduation picture, you've had it so long. You did graduate, didn't you? |

Ed - I have a reform school certificate of attendance, but it got me into the U of Nebr to further expand my knowledge. Good question about the molding coming off and what will be there - I'll rip one of Curt's off and see - don't tell him I'm going to do it. You don't eat breakfast? Must be a matinee type of guy. ------------------

I just finish doing mine......I'm pleased with the results. Cheapest I 've ever spent on the Kat, $11.00 for roll of 22 feet. Ed, as far as removing them later, there shouldn't be any |

I did mine last weekend. I am extremely happy with it. On the stock paint, the chrome moulding can be removed easily from the grill. I painted my grill gloss black and the moulding fits snuggly but will still pull off if I needed to. Thanks to Larry for coming up with this idea. It saved me a lot of time and hassles. Bill, your picture convinced me. The red really shows it up. Since Red is THE BEST that is all I was interested in. No offense to you other guys who couldn't get Red!!! I will do that in the very near future. Larry, what did you use? Wider should be better. |

OK, This is something the poorest Prowler owner can afford. Where do I buy this stuff? Mine is black so it should show up EXTREMELY well. ------------------ |

JP, Look for it at any autobody paint & supply store, it will be less expensive if purchased in a bulk roll. |

Bill - great job, really shows well on red cat! JJP - on black, I'm sure the chrome will explode the appearance on front end. Ed - just do it. To remove all types of adhesive mouldings or emblems, slightly heat with hair blow dryer and use fishing monofilament line to go under and pull off. Any adhesive residue will clean up with Simple Green or eqvlt. You can buy moulding just about anywhere, but is higher priced at national auto parts stores. Locate a store that caters to body shops - selling paint and body shop equipment and supplies, this is your best bet for price. Figure 50-75 cents a foot is reasonable. Curt used fully rounded door edge guard molding, and came out really nice. I used L shaped moulding, with the adhesive on the vertical L stem. Most all use 3M adhesive on the mouldings, so you just cut alittle long for each vane and then pull protective strip off adhesive and apply and trim excess off. I heated the moulding with blow dryer first to make more flexible before applying to the vanes. Actually, first I removed the grill and gave it a good bath with mild detergent. I bought a 40 foot roll of moulding for $21. Only #s on box: UDE-40S / and phone# 214-245-4525 for comments. I used about 22 1/2 ft of that roll. Email Curt or me if you have further questions. ------------------

Opps, forgot - I got this idea from Mark Radeff, owner of really sharp PTCruiser (lowered, wheels & 16" tires, exhaust,K&N intake, etc). I did it to my silver cat and passed idea to Curt. Ed- I got the pics back and will give to Curt to post. I'm not that computer smart, as you know, just a smart a$$. You were right, the first pic on that roll was from my junior/senior prom night! Don't think I scored that evening..............too long ago to remember. |

Finally someone recommends a brilliant AND cheap idea to spruce up the car. AlleyCat....way to go, man. I'm definitely going to use your idea for enhancing the grille. Ed Monahan, you and me with red cars, looks best on your red grille, the greatest color of all the colors for a Prowler, of course, red. Oh and, yes, did I mention that red was the greatest of all Prowler colors? ------------------ |

Paul - But don't build Ed's head up too big, or we will have to put real chrome on that dome! Personally, I think the black cats with this treatment will stand out of the crowd. JMO ------------------

Are you talking musical SCORE, AlleyCat. Your place in POA history is now secure with this grill treatment. I am going to do it but you had mentioned you did not use door edge trim. I wanted to imitate the master. I will contact my body shop friend to get the best. A side note. Someone hit the trunk of the Intrepid with a stick, rod or whatever and put three distinct dents in the trunk lid and scratched the rear window. I left it while I was gone and my oldest son was going to pick it up. I called from Georgia while stuck in the Typhoon, Monday and my son told me that they could not buff out the scratches on the window so they were going to replace it for $1200. The insurance co. agreed to pay and my son told them I would just take the cash and not worry about the scratches. I picked the car up today and Jack (body shop guy) asked if I had talked to my son yet. There has been a slight change. They decided they could replace the rear window with a USED glass, which was readily available and therefore I would be getting about $200 instead of $1200. It was just like my stocks and mutual funds. I almost had it in my hand and then poof. |

Everyones grill looks great from the pictures. But, up close, could someone please describe what it looks likein person. I'm wondering if it is obvious that door molding was stuck on the grill, or does it look like a factory part? Thanks |

My grill is down with Custom Coatings as we speak. Sure, I will be $400 poorer, but as everyone has pointed out with the stock markets latest dive ... what's $400 !!! Will post results of CC's latest work when I get the grill back near the end of the month. For an 'cheap' alternative, I think the photos look GREAT ... but at Larry said ... ain't nuthin lik the 'real thang' .... Prowl On Dudes and Dudettes ------------------ |

I know the price might be high but the look of the Custom Coating chrome grill is at the top of improvements I've made to the car and would do again if I got another Cat. I wouldn't matter what color the car was the chrome grill blends the lights in and looks great. The chrome in John's silver car looks great and that would be the color you would think it wouldn't make that much difference. Laddie installed his chrome in the orange car Jerry had at Woodward last year, what a difference. Now who will be the 1st with a Blue to get chrome grill? ------------------ This message has been edited by WildCat on 03-15-2001 at 08:56 PM |
